I had a dryer fire that has caused some minor damage and LOTS of smoke damage. I got a couple good lungs full of the nasty black stuff but I am good. Thank God I was able to get it out before the Great crews from the Chattanooga Fire Dept got here. Those guys were awesome. They set up a fan to blow the smoke out and made me suck on an oxygen mask for a bit. All is well and in a few days (weeks) wife gets a new washer and dryer. If you want to call and check on me, I am fine but wait to Friday so I can get my head clear. I lost my vent once and ran the dryer without it. I had a smokey mess as well. The firemen came, put it out and chopped up to check for more flames

Wow! I should show that to the boys who NEVER clean the vent.
Did you know that boy scouts used to teach boys to use dryer lint to start fires? That should tell you something.

My parents still use it. They take egg cartons (the older style, you can still get 'em) and mix dryer lint with the melted remains of candles (you know, the stubs too short to burn, the drippings, etc) and pour that into the egg carton compartments. Cut 'em up into individual "eggs" and you've got fire starters.

I've often wondered if it makes any difference if one has a gas dryer or an electric dryer. Comments?

Warkitty, that's a great idea! I have gathered pine cones and coated them with melted candles and used them for firestarters. The lint and candle wax sounds more potent.

Not just that screen for every use. Get the one out the back and for God's sake Get rid of the plastic hose and go metal. Wish I had.

Yikes! Glad you and yours are ok, joedog. I clean my vent out after every dryer load and wash it at least once a week. However, I didn't know about the one you're talking about on the back. I'll have to look into that.

I'll have to look into that. Not just that screen get the vent from the dryer to the outside of house. REGULARLY. And get rid of that plastic hose. Those things should be banned. That is what went up on me.

Dryer vents??? I didn't know dryers were capable of feeling emotion. Bummer.
Oh, I clean them. Just like my teeth. Yep, my vents are clean. Not clear, just clean.
