AlGore's personal heavy duty energy consuming appetite can remain as is or, if he wishes, it can increase to his heart's content. Sure, Gore has the neve to demand that everyone else reduce their standards of living, but when it comes to protecting his existing life style, he argues that purchasing carbon offsets somehow rolls back the pollution he uses in powering his cars, jets, and his home.
Does anyone buy this?

I'm so used to politicians, liberal ones in particular, telling me to behave one way and then behaving differently themselves, that I hardly even notice anymore. I'm sure they don't mind, either.

You can buy carbon offsets on eBay now.
BTW, listening to all those whacko stars telling me to take public transportation... Well, all I could think is that I would join them on public transportation, just as soon as they step foot on the bus/subway.

If Gore is right & purchasing offsets reduces one's "carbon footprint", then it follows that the whole world can be carbon neutral forever & ever -- all we have to do is figure out the price tag

I know you're joking but for those that don't know...and don't want to look it up... "The process of Carbon offsetting involves two steps – first a calculation of your carbon footprint. For individuals, you can do this on-line with our real-time calculator. For businesses and organization, we offer a service tailored to your businesses needs – please contact us for your obligation-free carbon footprint appraisal quotation The second step involves buying ‘carbon offset’ credits from emission reduction projects. Such projects will prevent / have already prevented or removed an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide elsewhere in the World. As CO2 emissions are distributed across the World, it does not matter whether you make the reduction in Manchester or Mumbai – the positive effect on the environment will be the same." ~J

Al Gore is a joke. He is polluting more than ever and he thinks that using the carbon offsets will balance things out. Bullshit. He owns that company and carbon offsets are the junks bonds in the stock market. It doesn't make sense since you are doing nothing to reduce your energy consumption. People who think that they can still pollute to the same extent by buying these carbon offsets are idiots.

People that think that either do not understand the concept or are living in denial.
BTW - one would imagine that Gore has a staff to run his house. Seems to me that would mean he represents the carbon footprint of a home and a small business (being an employer too).
Like the UN - it may not be the best plan but it is the best thing we have to work with so far...

Grid, what is your understanding of carbon offset purchasing as a way to clean up the environment?

If I was truly concerned with carbon emissions I would both buy the carbon offsets and reduce the amount of carbon I personally emmitted. I think I would fly commercial when I had to fly, reduce the conditioned square footage of my home, drive as fuel efficient car as I could find when I had to drive somewhere and ride a bicycle as often as I could.
