Millions of college students are suddenly facing sharply higher prices for birth control, prompting concerns among health officials that some will shift to less preferred contraceptives or stop using them altogether. Prices for oral contraceptives, or birth control pills, are doubling and tripling at student health centers, the result of a complex change in the Medicaid rebate law that essentially ends an incentive for drug companies to provide deep discounts to colleges. "It's a tremendous problem for our students because not every student has a platinum card," said Hugh Jessop, executive director of the health center at Indiana University. There, he said, women are paying about $22 per month for prescriptions that cost $10 a few months ago. "Some of our students have two jobs, have children," Jessop said. "To increase this by 100 percent or more overnight, which is what happened, is a huge shock to them and to their system." complete story

So is getting pregnant. Simple solutions: a) suck it up and pay the new price, b) quit having sex.

Can't believe that girls are freaking about paying $22 a month for oral contraceptives when a recent study estimated an amount in the high six-figures to raise a child from birth to 18.
Grow up!

Now why would I want to take a birth control pill when letting the doctor have his way with scissors can make it so much less of a hassle. (Well, the ice bag in the lap did get a little uncomfortable.)

Well, heck, I wouldn't want to take a birth control pill, or get a vasectomy..... Those things hurt, heh...

It's $22 bucks, christ they act like they were $60 to begin with and jumped to $180 or some s**t.
"joan would have been protected from being a single parent but rather than pony up an extra $12, she decided to spend $45 on drinks that night in a local bar and ended up drunk doing things you wouldn't do to a farm animal. The baby is due in march"

Who knows if it's right...........
"The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 and came up with $160,140 for a middle-income family."

Bah! The ice bag was nothing. It was the wife pointing and laughing at me doing the "C-Section Shuffle" for the weekend that was memorable...

The pain really wasn't too bad after the surgery. There was pain, to be sure, but mostly it was just an uncomfortable feeling from the swelling. I had the surgery with a local instead of general anesthesia and that caused me some distress.

Question is.......did you get any happy drugs? ~J

Why would anyone do it unless you did? Actually, all I got was some antibiotics and some highpowered Motrin or some such but that was seventeen years ago.

Translation - "Numb nuts"
It really is a very minor surgery. It does not warrant any good drugs. Just a weekend of soreness and reduced mobility. It is truly ironic that you sit & stand like a pregnant woman...
In the end it is a LOT less discomfort than the obvious alternative.

Yeah, I guess asking your significant other to tie her tubes might be a bit uncomfortable.. ~J

Tubal litigation is not minor surgery. It is much more invasive and carries a much higher risk of complications.

Tube tying was considered.
I believe it was $600 and easy recovery vs $3K and major surgery.
The decision was easy.

That is quite a bit of difference in price. Dang it......the insurance companies should just foot the bill for Tubal litigation.. At least make the decision a bit easier ~J

It is not just money. Tying tubes is major invasive plumbing work. Do you want your SO to suffer the recovery for that?
For a guy they hit you with a local, slice a bit of skin, tie the vas, and darn you up like a sock. If all you had for the weekend was asprin, you would be fine.
Would you not "take the bullet" for your sweetie under those conditions?

Hey, another good selling point for the male procedure is if "nothing lasts forever" then you don't have to pay $3k for your next GF/wife

I don't now, but I did when I got fixed. Add where necessary to above comments an "IF you had a SO".
