I have eaten there (MLK and University) twice this week by happenstance. Best fried chicken I have had in a long time. Served on white bread with sides of beans and slaw. The tamales were also excellent and the waitresses were astounding. Plenty of free parking. Outdoor seating also.
It has definitely been placed on the "Rotation".

Champys rules. Bea's has some competition. Everything there is awesome. Chicken and 40s!

Champy's rocks. Everything that has been mentioned is as good as advertised. The cole slaw is home made and really good as well and they also have fried catfish now that is done so well that people who don't normally eat catfish like it.

Ok, so I tried Champy's the other night. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I have to say I was not the least bit impressed with the chicken at all. My chicken lacked any seasoning or "pop" to it. I opted for the Chicken Tenders and Fries. The breading was a bit weak, no crunch,no spice and somewhat overcooked. The fries it came with were stale as if they had been sitting there for hours (no excuse). The very kind waitress brought some fresh fries and they were really good (the seasoning was delicious) I was thinking, I wish the chicken had this seasoning on it. I can get fries anywhere so screw that! The save grace to the chicken was the spectacular "Champy's Sauce" that appears to be homemade. The recipe of BBQ sauce, honey mustard, lemon juice, and beer sounded weird but it was quite good.
I will not be making a special trip for their food anytime soon.

Ate there tonight. Chicken was freshly cooked and pretty good. I liked the slaw but the beans were just OK. At $1.95, the sweet tea sucked. Can anybody make tea better than Cracker Barrel? NO!! Tmbiance was cool and I can tolerate the shortfalls otherwise, as long as the clientele is as good looking as tonight!!! And serving 40's is certainly interesting, especially when you can purchase your own koozie, write your name on it and leave it hanging over the bar.

GOOD point! Yeah the waitress assured me the tea was great and she drinks tons of it. Sub par, not that sweet and flavor was so-so

Taste is subjective. I like Champy's fried chicken, but the tenders are below average. Slice some grooves in a chicken breast to let the steam out... and let the Crystal hot sauce in. That's good eating.

We're there every Saturday about 11:30 with a group of about 15 of our closest friends and acquaintances, and sometimes strangers. Come on down tomorrow if you can! Always a good time. We just pull up the tables together!
