Free Friday Night Music Documentary Film Series -- Starts This Friday! 7pm, at the Folk School, BYOB.
Jan 21 - The Sound of Rio: Brasileirinho (90 mins) Brasileirinho is a documentary film about Choro, the first genuinely Brazilian urban music. It was back in the late 19th century in Rio de Janeiro when Brazilian musicians started to blend European melodies, Afro-Brazilian rhythms and the melancholic interpretation of the Brazilian Indians' music to create Choro. Choro is credited as being the first musical expression of Brazil's melting pot and had a prominent place in the development of Brazil's cultural identity. Choro remained a major popular music style until the 1920s, leading directly into Samba and later to Bossa Nova. After a slight decline in popularity, Choro music has made a remarkable comeback over the past few decades.
Jan 28 - The Singing Revolution (97 mins) The Singing Revolution is a documentary film about the nonviolent Singing Revolution in Estonia where hundreds of thousands of Estonians gathered publicly, between 1986 and 1991, in an effort to end decades of Soviet occupation. The revolutionary songs they created anchored Estonia's non-violent struggle for freedom.
Feb 4 - Afghan Star (88 mins) After 30 years of war and Taliban rule, pop Idol has come to Afghanistan. Millions are watching the TV series 'Afghan Star' and voting for their favorite singers by mobile phone. For many this is their first encounter with democracy. This timely film follows the dramatic stories of four contestants as they risk all to become the nation's favorite singer. But will they attain the freedom they hope for in this vulnerable and traditional nation?
Feb 11 - Pete Seeger: The Power of Song (93 mins) Filmmaker Jim Brown blends archival footage, interviews and home movies to paint an affectionate portrait of pioneering folk singer and political activist Pete Seeger, best known for the classic anthems "If I Had a Hammer" and "Turn, Turn, Turn." Highlights include candid conversations with legendary artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, who weigh in on Seeger's far-reaching influence.
Feb 18 - We'll take a break from the film series on this Friday to welcome a live Folk School performance from songwriter Louisa Branscomb, one of the instructors at the Wintersong Songwriter Workshop.
Feb 25 - War Dance (105 mins) Set in civil war-ravaged Northern Uganda, this Best Documentary Oscar nominee follows the lives of three youngsters who attend school in a refugee camp and find hope through a rich tradition of song and dance. Coming from a world in which children are abducted from their families and forced to fight in the rebel army, these kids give it their all when they travel to the capital city to take part in the prestigious Kampala Music Festival.
Mar 4 - Sojourn of the Strings This documentary centers on the fifth anniversary of the Black Banjo Gathering last March at Appalachian State. New York's Ebony Hillbillies, New Orleans' Don Vappie, Mali's Cheick Hamala Diabate, the Carolina Chocolate Drops and mentor Joe Thompson lend their thoughts on the banjo's evolution as do renowned folk musicians Pete Seeger and Bela Fleck.
Mar 11 - Pasajero: A Journey of Time and Memory (55 mins) This documentary follows a group of young Mexican-American musicians who leave the inner city to join their music teacher Julián Gonzalez - an aging violinist - on a trip to his hometown in the Mexican state of Jalisco, where mariachi was born. Once there, the performers encounter a host of captivating characters and become acquainted with their musical roots in a new way, connecting with a purer, pre-commercial style of mariachi.
