My wife and I will be spending 5 days in the Chattanooga area, and will be there on Mothers day. She loves a good steak, and I was wondering if someone could tell me the best place to go for a good steak.

Porters has excellent quality product, but tends to kill it with too much rub, etc. Further, all sides are a la carte. Hennens has very good quality, but haphazard service. Cleveland's Bald Headed Bistro, like Porters, often drowns the quality of their product, but have a more inovative chef and varied menu. Both Porters and Bistro present raw meat at the table, which is offensive to some. Check out the online menus.

Hennens for convenience and lack of pretension. Wine list pretty exclusively American. Bistro for the chef's work.

I decided to go with Porters, and have never been so disappointed in my life. There's no doubt that Outback has a better steak than Porters. I didn't mind the price if it would have been a good steak, but it was not. Anyone thinking of going there, should think about Outback instead.

Sorry you had a bad experience; I have too. They ruin high quality meat. For "fine dining" steak, the drive to Cleveland can be worth it. Henne's 2nd.

May not trendy enough, but I think Big River serves an excellent steak.
"New York Strip please. Smoking, with a hint of ash".

Please note the Bald Headed Bistro is owned by Alan Jones, aka Mr. Check Into Cash himself. I cannot give that bastard a penny of my money no matter the product/service the son of a bitch sells.

Know nothing of his other businesses, but he has a real reputation for demeaning and verbally abusing staff and service people.

What's your beef (bad thread pun, I know) with Check Into Cash/Jones? Other than taking advantage of poor people who don't understand how to handle their money? Is the check cashing business exploitation? I've heard that it's doing poor people a favor by providing them banking services that conventional banks simply won't provide. Is that just a line of BS?

I dunno, is charging 520% APR for short term loans exploitation or providing a service?
Seems to me it is along the same lines as saying those rapists in the Congo are providing a service, sex, to their victims.

I dunno is charging 520% APR for short term loans exploitation or proving a service? I've heard the argument that higher rates are necessary to make up for the very high default rates and that no one is holding a gun to anyone's head to force people into these arrangements. And also that a high-interest loan is better than no loan at all. Are these arguments specious or inaccurate?

I totally agree that nobody is forcing anyone to use these loan sharks service nor do I advocate for it to be illegal. However it is immoral and while I am no saint myself I do have morals and cannot allow myself to EVER, knowingly, do business with these types of individuals. Just a personal preference, just like I will NEVER purchase a product made in France nor purchase Citgo gasoline.

The best steak is at my house, cooked on the grill over chunk hardwood charcoal. Salt and pepper only. I have never understood why some establishments obscure the flavor of the beef with seasonings. Of course as a cynic I assume it is because the beef is inferior.

Which is reason enough. Isn't it? I can't always afford prime grade cuts but still would like some beef. The right marinade can allow me to enjoy that cheaper grade of beef. That's especially important if I have more than a couple of friends I want to enjoy a barbecue with.

BlackFox, indeed chunk charcoal does behave as you stated. However that is much more of a problem with me when slow cooking than when grilling a steak. Steaks do not spend a lot of time over the coals at Casa Bear.
My grill does have a height adjustment feature which allows me to lower the coals when they quite hot and raise them as they cool.

Ah, a raw meat man. I'm a low and slow kind of guy, which is the only way to cook a medium well steak and still be able to cut it with a fork.

Rare anyway. An average supermarket rib eye takes 4 minutes over good high heat and results in a steak with good grill marks and a well seared surface with a lukewarm red interior. This methodology, with some time off the real high heat after searing works well for tri-tips , flank steak and flatirons as they tend to swell during cooking.

As far as Chattavegas is concerned Hennon's is the best overall restaurant. As far as chains go, Longhorn makes a good quick "Gotta eat, worked all day. Very Hungry. Don't want to cook" steak. Good places sort of far away are Stoney River and Ruth Cris in Atlanta. Its really hard to make steak inedible... As far as non-traditional you could go to Fire of Brasil or Fogo du Cao in Atlanta.

I think you are really going to have to try it out yourself. As long as they have a decent steak with a good atmosphere you can't go wrong. I don't think any steakhouse restaurant will be perfect though.

Olive Garden has a steak that's pretty good. I like Texas Roadhouse and Longhorn Steakhouse as well. I've never liked the spice combination at Outback. Their steaks are pretty good, though.
