No, there was a dog on site that apparently growled and threatened. The construction manager pulled his gun. I wasn't there, I don't know what happened after that, just that no one was bitten, the construction manager was fired for carrying a weapon on company time and we all got updated by corporate that we're not allowed to carry a firearm in our vehicle when going to or from work or a job site. If I felt a need to carry a gun in my car and I had the permit and such for it the gun would be in my car regardless of what my employer had to say about it. It would just be concealed and no one would be told it was there. If I really needed it I could get another job. If it wasn't there and I really needed it I probably couldn't get another job.

the reasoning behind it i think is they fear someone going on a rampage. if a rampage is going to happen, then it will. no matter what the rules and regulations say.
and the sleeping with the glock under the pillow? i would not have it any other way. it is not going to go off unless it is removed from the holster and the trigger is pulled.

Exactly, a key point that most tend to forget about the TN Handgun permit is that is is a permit to carry a handgun..... by law it does NOT have to be concealed. but is it really wise to advertise that you carry? my personal opinion is NO, it is not.... and concealed means concealed...nobody but you will ever know, unless you "let" them know you are armed (or that one is in your car). but another key point has also been made in this thread. just b/c you do not carry a firearm, does not mean you are Unarmed. your brain is your fist line of defense. don't put yourself in a situation where you will have to resort to violence. avoidance is the best course of action, your firearm is your last resource. always... (and don't forget about the lawyer attached to each round fired). Now as for sleeping with your gun, well, I'm not in basic training and I don't have to sleep with my rifle. I find that having a loaded 45 within two steps is adequate. now with that said. and with safety in mind. I do not recommend sleeping with a firearm. keeping in your beside table is one thing. we don't want somebody waking up b/c they hear a noise, and shooting their best friend by accident....as a matter of fact. if you hear a noise, and it wakes you, you should sit up in bed and be damn certain your awake before you pick up your flashlight and cell phone BEFORE you pick up your sidearm. Just my two cents worth.

Gun on the nightstand suffices for me.I toss, turn, fart, etc. too much to keep a gun in the bed with me.Besides I have 3 blood thirsty dogs who would alert me in time to take up a defensive posture behind my kevlar lined shower curtain. ;D

Speaking for the majority of people that took the poll that don't own a handgun--YOU PEOPLE ARE A BUNHCHA PARANOID NUTJOBS!!Are you always looking over your shoulder---do you have more moments of roadrage because your"carrying"?Do you hear more "noises" at night than most of us do?If you're going to the Delano Music Festival and Drug emporium are you "locked and loaded"?If your walking, say, from Big River to Provident parking lot on a Friday night do you feel having your weapon is a must? That's just too much whackiness for me.....but y'all have fun.

Guns just scare me! And, I haven't really had the need to have one. I had pepper spray, or mace, (not sure which) once, but lost it and never replaced it.

I had to vote "no permit", although I'm not breaking any laws. We still believe in the 2nd amendment and don't require permission to exercise Constitutional rights.
However, I had one when I lived in TN.

Julie, the next time there is a Chattanooga shoot, feel free to stop by and learn a little bit about handguns. i bet that once you get comfy and shoot one a couple of times, it will make you want to run out and buy one. edit: shouldn't this thread be in the firearms/outdoor section?

I don't have a handgun. Not because I'm afraid or have anything against them. Just never really had a 'thing' for them. Hubby and I decided not to have real firearms when our son was born. We have BB & pellet guns... but nothing stronger. Now we have two rifles, one inherited from each of our deceased fathers. They have been used and will be again. But these are more of a nostalgia thing than anything else. We don't carry them around on a gun rack... heck, we don't even have a pick up truck!

I don't own a gun, never have. I was raised in a home where firearms weren't present, so that probably has something to do with my decision. Also, I'm not comfortable around them, but over the years I've become more comfortable with people who choose to own them as long as they are responsible and it doesn't become a power trip for them. I respect the folks who choose to own a firearm and all I ask is that I get the same respect in return.

It's not just a question of being physically comfortable around them or handling them. Years ago, I had a very good friend who was a clinical psychologist tell me and some of my friends not to buy a gun unless you thought you were psychologically content with the fact that you could kill another human or be killed yourself with it. He had a gun and was content. I'd love to shoot for target practice and recreation, but I still don't know if I want one in the house or to carry.

That quote could also be for cars, trucks, and many other things in life. More people are killed by cars then guns in the U.S.

Maybe because there are a lot more cars than guns? Cars are definitely used more than guns, and both have great potential for being dangerous.

my point grid. A firearm is nothing but a tool that can be used or misused Just as a car can be misused. You must take proper safety precaution with both, by becoming complacent you could be killed or kill someone else.

More people are killed by cars then guns in the U.S. More people are beaten to death than shot, and three times as many people are stabbed to death. Those deaths aren't spectacular enough to make the news often.

As of this moment, I see that 19 people responded to the poll saying they have no carry permit.
If any of those 19 are interested in getting their permit, they should know that it takes time - like close to three months after you take the class and get the paperwork turned in to the state. You can figure on about $75 for the class if you provide your own pistol and ammo. A guy who teaches the class at Sportsman's Supply on Hixson Pike will rent you a nice Ruger .22 and ammo for about eight dollars.

Mark Haskins teaches the class at Sportsmans. He is a friend of mine and does a good job.Another friend I can recommend is Ronnie Dodd.Dodd also offers advanced classes beyond the carry class which is very benificial. He can be reached at www.doddtraining.com
