A new major construction project is scheduled to get underway next week and may impact your commute. TDOT announced Thursday that it will begin the highway widening project on Highway 27 in Chattanooga on Monday. The project will expand Highway 27 from the Olgiati Bridge to Signal Mountain Road to three lanes in each direction. Read more: www.wrcbtv.com/story/16454625/tdot-to-start-highway-27-project

Well at least they are starting finally! It should have begun 30 years ago. Now if they would straighten the south end to 24.

Like that strech of 27 isn't busy enough during rush hour. They should've widened that years ago!

I think I'll have to get back in the habit of riding my bike into town. It's not nearly as annoying as driving through a construction zone.

My timing is wonderful, as usual. Starting Monday, that's the road I have to drive on to get to work at WRCB.
(sigh)

This should cause the traffic on Dayton Blvd. (from which I'm sure you can get to WRCB) to increase exponentially.

I'm coming from the other direction, so it shouldn't be too bad. I'm just amused by the timing.

Ride your bike to work, Gary. Except for coming across the ridge it should be an easy ride.

Um... are you insane, Justin? Ride from East Ridge all the way downtown and across the river? During rush hour?

Leave early...then you will have time to meditate and plan for your day.

Once again, I am not WarKitty. I do not ride my bike across town, not even for work.

Gary, PM me and I will give you the best rush hour bypass for traffic. I will just need to know your most convenient way off the hill.

Um... are you insane, Justin? Ride from East Ridge all the way downtown and across the river? During rush hour? Other than the ridge the ride is flat and a bicycle is the perfect way to make your way through rush hour traffic. Once you get through the ridge just take 23rd to Willow to Main to Market. Turn right off Market onto Cherokee and then through the tunnel and you are there. Leave for work early and have breakfast at the Longhorn on N. Market on your way in. How far are we talking about? Ten miles? On a bicycle that's a piece of cake. Especially with only one significant hill in your way. Give it a try and see.

I believe a video piece about the ease of riding to work in this bike-friendly town would make an EXCELLENT first story for your new job. All you need is a helmet-cam.

I have ridden from 34th and Dodds to Market and MLK in less than twenty minutes. Finding a way across the ridge is going to be the only challenge.

It's not the distance (I ride about 10 miles a day as it is). To be honest, it's the ride home, after dark, through some of the not-so-safe parts of town that worry me.
I'll probably take my bike to work with me and ride during my lunch break, especially during the warmer months, but I do not see it is as commuting choice.

I've ridden from Hwy 58 to the Riverpark and on to St. Elmo nearly to the state line and back before. But with no shower facilities, riding to work isn't an option for me. I stink to high heaven after I ride. Just ask my wife.

when I had an office to go to and rode my bike to it in the Atlanta area, I kept baby wipes in my desk. Once done sweating, I'd clean up with them. The method proved quite effective.
I invested in lights for the bike so I could see and be seen in the odd hours, and while I rode through some sketchy areas in the Norcross area at the time, I never was harassed much by the locals. Just once or twice got hooted at.

There is a wonderful product called "Field Shower" which is a HUGE wipe that has a fairly pleasant scent. Hunters/campers use them all the time and they can be found at any sporting goods store. If you want economy, buy a package of "Tub 'o Towels" at Lowe's (in the big yellow dispenser). Large wipes that clean up just about anything. As a plus, after you use a "Tub'o Towels" wipe, you would then be able to use it to clean the grease off your bike.

I thoroughly enjoy riding my bike at night through downtown Chattanooga. Zac at Main Street Bicycle Co-op has hosted regular night rides for the past two years. I try to make them every chance I get. Unfortunately that is only a few times a year.
