oh I don't need another explaination. And I get still leaving the "media" section out of the subject threads.
but not allowing people to comment on anything media related sporadically thru the forum is just silly.
comments being deleted and threads being locked b/c someone makes a few mentions of radio, TV, or print in chattanooga is ridiculous.
We should be doing things that promote activity on this thing. Not driving people away. And nothing pisses people off and turns them away on a message board as being "censored"
it's annoying and partially why this website is dying

Forums web-wide have been dying, and it has nothing to do with censorship. You want a quicker death? Allow rampant and unmitigated posting by anyone about anything. I've seen what happens. It quickly devolves into a trollfest that no one wants to enter.
In fact, the healthiest forum still running that I know of is heavily censored (far stricter than here). It gets the traffic in large part because everyone, including new people, feel they can contribute without being immediately called out, ridiculed or bullied. There is no cursing, no thread-jacking and anything that seems to be ranging into heated anger is removed. If anything, the reason most often cited for not posting here anymore isn't censorship, it's not *enough* censorship curtailing the more vehement among us.

I believe I've made my reasons crystal clear why I don't want media "discussion" on the Forum (and it's never "discussion" - it's always sniping and criticism and insults, like your constant negative comments about Brewer), so why should you be surprised when your comments get knocked?
If someone asks you not to smoke in their house, do you light up anyway? And then complain that the homeowner keeps making your put out your cigarette?
It's the same philosophy, and if you can't accept that, then feel free to start your own site to talk about media. Just show a little respect for mine.
As Warkitty noted, message forums are not dying because they are being moderated -- and it bears pointing out that the CMF has been far less moderated than most other similar forums.

I hate to disagree, but I don't know how much moderation has to do with it. I'm on a couple of other (non-region specific) message boards where all of the people are extremely cool and chill and almost no moderation is required, although the moderators are extremely active and involved with the board. There are people of all ages on the board, even many younger members, and even they are well behaved.
I think it's just the people on this board. For some reason, very disrespectful and snarky people think this is a fun place to come and play.. even though I didn't post here back then, several years ago you seemed to have a lot more playful and fun people on here, and it was a lot more fun to read.
Not sure what the bug up everyone's behind is now, but the makeup of this neighborhood has definitely changed. Shame.
EDIT: Maybe the debate lounge has something to do with.. since people really seem to go at it in there and "thick skin is required", it perhaps bleeds over into the other areas of the board where people don't necessarily want to deal with the style of messages in that area. That, and perhaps feelings get hurt there and that affects everywhere else here.
And I'd like to point out I'm not criticizing that area or the board itself.. not at all. I just think a lot of the people here don't seem to have proper respect for others.

Very true and accurate, captaineric. What many seem to think is "playful banter" comes across as very mean-spirited and snarky. Most folk just looking in here are turned off by that. Indeed, a few years ago there WERE a lot more perky and playful folks. It's a shame we've moved away from that.

OK, here's my final diatribe on this and I'm done w/ this thread. And like for real done, not bipolar message board guy who says he's done and immediately fires back after he ripped a new one. So here we go:
apples and aaahh pomegranates
yes you have, and I disagree w/ your crystal clear reasoning especially taking in the account this medium's relavance and traffic. We will just have to agree to disagree.
despite my abrasive tone or argumentative approach @ times I believe over the years I have respected this forum. Been posting since @ least 2004. Maybe earlier.
that's b/cit was a fun place to play. And this forum was wildly popular which gave you the best of both. That is a product of it's success. You don't have trolls and threadjacks on boards that nobody pays any attention to. It's the classroom bully scenario. Ignore them and they will go away. Well,... nobody ignored them. And truthfully I thought it was half the fun around here.
you are corect. there were, and it was.
- so to close this longwinded mess; This place used to be the place where anybody who was anybody was reading. why? well b/c social media hadn't taken off yet sure, but b/c it was so community driven. If it was talked about in and around Chattanooga you could easily voice your opinion here. Same thing if it was heard on the radio, passing in the street, read in the paper, seen on the TV, witnessed @ Riverbend, whispered @ the strut, photographed @ bonnaroo, overheard @ on the courthouse elevator, made up by somebody @ Finley Stadium, or good ole fashioned "fish" stories @ AT&T park.
I realize this forum will never ever have that kind of influence or power again b/c of the current internet landscape and it probably doesn't need it. It became a monster. PEople were being threatened to be fired over what they were saying on this freaking website. I know I was told once to "watch what I say" and another in not so many words that I could be fired if I kept posting.
But this place doesn't have that kind of influence or power anymore. Not even close. So the more limitations you put on this unique-to-the-community forum the less traffic it's gonna get. It's the old new customers vs. regulars the local dives struggle with.
Us 20 - 30 or so that like to poke fun at each other and show a cute pic or do a restuarant review or the cops talking to themselves. that's all good. But it's slowly fading away.
And you know what Neil Young says about Fading away?

And, sadly, too often not a place for civil discourse and discussion. The gnashing, snarling, hyperbolic venom spewing, denigration and name calling is an indication of the prickification of the country.

If you work for someone who wants to fire you for posting on a website, you might want to find a new employer. Most people on this site are using handles not even their real names. Only Bryan had the balls to use his real name.

A forum that is hundreds of times bigger than this one and has taken a big hit just like all of them is photo.net they are heavily moderated and tolerate no one acting an ass.
I still believe part of the decline here is people more and more think this is chattanoogan or nooga and expect to read and be entertained without contributing.
I too would like to have a place to ask media related questions, and having been close to many media people I understand Gary's rule.
there has/is a media forum but it never made it because so few people were willing or capable of posting.
I'm sure there is a lot we can talk about other than media.
