The First Annual Old Time Weekend Event - this weekend, Jan 11 & 12, 2013 BREAKING NEWS: Thomas Maupin, our flat footer is coming! Old-time buckdancer Thomas Maupin was raised in a farming family in Eagleville Tennessee that was known for dancers, in a time when community square dances were still common. As an exceptional dancer from an early age, he had a special love for the rhythmic flat-foot steps that accompany the social group figures of square dancing. It was not until middle age that Thomas gained notoriety for his buckdancing talent and innovations, when he began entering dance competitions at traditional music events, beginning in the 1970s. Over the next 30 years, Thomas has won over 60 first place titles including the National Championship, which he has won 6 times, as well as State Championships in Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. He has hoofed at notable festivals, shows and venues such as Merlefest, Clifftop, the Ryman Auditorium, and the Grand Ole Opry. He is a recipient of the Tennessee State Governor's Folklife Heritage Award, the Old-Time Herald Heritage Award and the Uncle Dave Macon Days Trailblazer Award. More recently, Thomas has been less concerned with titles than with inspiring more appreciation for his dance heritage through exhibition performances, workshops, and teaching. He is accompanied by his grandson Daniel Rothwell, who plays an energetic brand of old-time banjo reminicent of old-time style players from his area such as Uncle Dave Macon and Bashful Brother Oswald. Thomas Maupin has the 'something extra' found in all truly great dancers, where even small movements are invested with a deeper meaning. Don't miss Thomas and flat footing at the Old Time Weekend! New Kids Jam Starts Today 5pm - Fridays Calling all kids (age 9 and up) who play ukulele, fiddle, piano, guitar, dulcimer, flute, recorder, banjo, cello, spoons, ...whatever! We are going to put together a collective repertoire of songs and tunes, drawing from different musical traditions. This jam class focuses on good listening, good rhythm, and making use of our instruments, bodies, and voices in musical ways. Participants are expected to have some experience with their instrument, as this is not the setting for individual attention on any particular instrument (see private lesson options or other group classes for that). Singers are welcome too. This is a drop-in jam class, $10 per meeting, or $5 for members. New students are welcome to join at any time. Class will meet every Friday starting January 11, on an ongoing basis. There will be some exceptions (holidays, etc.) when the class will not meet, so call Christie if you want to confirm: 423-779-6581. Instructor: Christie Burns Matt's Traditional Slow Jam Starts Today 5:30pm - Fridays Every Friday 5:30-6:45 with a few holiday exceptions (contact Matt Evans if you want to confirm: 865-806-6589). $10 per class ($5 for members). Bring your fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass, dulcimer, harmonica, or voice and get started and gain valuable experience playing with a group of musicians. For: Students who have reached at least an intermediate stage on their instruments, but who are not yet ready to jump right into full-speed jam sessions. For prospective students who feel they may be getting in over your head: don't be too afraid of taking the plunge; a good way to raise the level of your playing is to jump into situations that challenge you. You may not always keep up, or pick up as much as some of the more experienced students, but a willingness to stretch yourself will always reward you. Introducing our New Instructor: Glenn Weiser Glenn Weiser grew up in New Jersey, where he studied classical guitar while in high school with Maestro Paul Battat, himself a student of Andres Segovia's pupil Rodrigo Reira. At age 19 Glenn switched to fingerstyle guitar and studied with noted ragtime guitarist Eric Schoenberg. During this period he also took up harmonica, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle. Lessons are available with Glenn on acoustic and electric guitar, banjo (bluegrass, clawhammer, and Irish tenor), mandolin, harmonica, bass guitar, ukulele & fiddle. The styles he teaches include fingerpicking, electric and acoustic blues, Celtic music, bluegrass, folk, country, classic rock, jam-band, & classical guitar as well as music theory. Glenn is the author of 10 books on fingerstyle guitar and harmonica and a Rounder Records guest artist with 30 years of teaching experience. He is also the harmonica columnist for the folk music journal Sing Out!. Acoustic Guitar magazine, for which he has also written, has described him as a "master teacher." February Events Calendar Feb 6, Wednesday, 7pm Old Time Session for Students, hosted by Christie. This is one of our mixed instrument "drop-in" classes, where members only pay $5 for each visit. (Nonmembers, $10.) We take our time with the tunes, and usually learn one new tune each week. New students are welcome to join anytime. Feb 8, Friday, 5:00pm: Kids Jam (also another "drop-in" class, following that same format, $5 members, or $10 nonmembers). 5:30pm: Matt's Traditional Slow Jam Class. This is the most popular class at the Folk School, I'm proud to report! Matt and his students have kept this class simmering since the Folk School's earliest days, and it's really sounding great. Clearly, everyone's having a great time too. This too is a drop-in class, so no commitment required. Just bring your instrument and a five dollar bill (or a ten dollar bill for nonmembers). Feb 9, Saturday, 5pm: Sing It Sister, a group of gals who meet occasionally at the Folk School to sing together and teach each other songs, will be doing a 30-minute participatory singing performance/activity next door at Loose Cannon for the Girls Inc. fundraising event starting at 7, but we'll meet at the Folk School at 5 to go over some songs. Anyone who wants to join us should contact Christie: 423-779-6581 or christie@chattanoogafolk.com. Feb 13, Wednesday, 7pm: Old Time Session for Students. See above. Feb 15, Friday, 5pm and 5:30: Kids Jam and Matt's jam class. See above. ***Now. This is where it gets REALLY interesting. Ready?**** Feb 15, Friday, 6:30pm: Rhythm Bones Workshop, taught by Steve Wixson of the Rhythm Bones Society. (Free for Matt's Jam participants, and included also in the ticket for the Square Dance Party.) 6:30pm: Square Dance Party! As soon as the bones workshop finishes, find yourself a partner for the first dance, and then square up with three other couples. We'll be dancing all night with guest caller, Michael Ismerio, and our friends Jeff and Sharon Richards as the core of the band (they'll be joined by some other friends too!). Cash bar, featuring Chattanooga Whiskey. Admission: $8 regular / $5 members. Feb 16, Saturday, 11am: The Basics of Bowing workshop, taught by our visiting guest, Michael Ismerio. For all levels of fiddlers, as Michael will be teaching bowing techniques, and also some techniques for teaching the techniques to others. See website for details. 1pm: Meet the Accordion, introductory workshop presented by James Carlson. For anyone who's curious, or for those of you who have accordions in your closet and don't know what to do with them. Bring it! 2pm: The Melody of Bowing workshop, taught by Michael Ismerio. An intermediate old time fiddle tune workshop. See website for complete description. 3:30pm: Meet the Banjo, introductory workshop presented by Jim Pankey. Similar to the accordion workshop, but with the word "banjo" where the word "accordion" is. In both cases, Jim Pankey and James Carlson will be available that day before or after their workshops to teach private lessons on these instruments, so get in touch if you're interested in scheduling a lesson with these great instructors! Feb 17, Sunday, 2-4pm: Sunday Afternoon Jazz Jam Session. FREE event, just like our other open Sunday events. Come to play, or come to listen. There will be a group of musicians playing out of the Real Book, and they've already given this tip that they'll warm up with "Autumn Leaves," so if you want to study up ahead of time, you can be ready to join in on that fine standard. Feb 20, Wednesday, 7pm: Old Time Session for Students. See above. Feb 21, Thursday, 7:30pm: Shape Note Singing Workshop. FREE (donations are welcome) workshop brought to us by Judy Mincey of Calhoun, GA. Judy is just one of many dedicated Sacred Harp singers in our area who loves to share her love of this music with anyone who wants to try it. We had a blast at the first workshop in January, and this is everyone's second chance to get in on the action. It's a very exciting form of community music! Come check it out if you can. Feb 22, Friday, 5pm and 5:30: Kids Jam and Matt's jam class. See above. Feb 24, Sunday, 2-4pm: Acoustic Blues Jam. FREE event, open to anyone who wants to play, listen, learn. Feb 27, Wednesday, 7pm: Old Time Session for Students. See above. Kids Ukulele Classes in February Every Thursday in February Learning to play the ukulele is a great way for kids to practice the basic skills needed for most fretted instruments. In this class, kids will work on strumming patterns, rhythm, and red hot dance moves. Instructor: Randy Steele. Click here for more info and registration.

Welcome to the April 2013 issue of IB! As we welcome spring, we are reminded of the fresh sounds and bright futures of our music's industry. Our feature story highlights the Leadership Bluegrass Class of 2013 and what they experienced and learned to be our community's next great advocates and leaders. Also in this issue: we hear how an international artist was made successful in part from the support of other musicians here in the U.S. We talk about how to help IBMA grow in May during Membership Month, preview what to look forward to in Raleigh, tell you about a special offer from Amtrak, and review the latest bluegrass albums. What's more, this issue has information about Bluegrass Nation featuring some of the genre's most talented artists in the new Backyard Bluegrass Sessions, the Street Team looking for their next ambassadors, and the open position at IBMA. Reflections: Thinking of the month of March, musically speaking, the phrase March Madness just does not fit, but rather “March Happiness or busyness”. The first weekend enjoyed the Cedars of Lebanon “Breakin' Up Winter” Old Time music weekend. Then the Ceili party at the Shamrock Castle and the St Pats party at the Fiddle & Pick. Then finishing out the month with a smashing crowd for the Buddy Greene Harmonica Workshop and concert. Buddy is truly a positive force on stage and also a great teacher. His fans and students came from all across the country to see him. Announcements: 3rd Sat Arts Cruise is back, Full moon Pickin' Parties and pickin' parties at the Fiddle & Pick are back (see schedule at the end of the calendar by the sneak peaks and other items of interest. ATTENTION...Irish Workshop update; enrollments are not what they should be and it is just a few weeks now before the biggest event of the year. I do not know if it is because we lost our marquis sign out front from the tornado, or if folks in this economy can not attend or if they just forgot to sign up. If you have already signed up perhaps talk to a friend or family member to come; could you please pass the word along on this wonderful event. The center needs your help to get the word out. If you were planning on signing up but just putting it off, please fill out a registration form. We are extending the “early bird price” to April 2 by 6:00pm. It is difficult to plan without knowing the numbers of persons to accommodate. This workshop has an incredible line up of teachers. It is the best deal ever. There are family packages available. It is not easy to organize such an event and pay for travel expense, house and feed the staff and pay for them to teach. We would not want to lose this event. Please if you care to keep this going you can help ; Put the Irish ws brochure and the schedule of classes on your facebook & twitter. I also have a bunch of hard copies in house to put up places. There are folks out there that need to know that 14 awesome teachers are coming to the Fiddle & Pick. The 5th annual Irish workshop weekend Event! Note from Gretchen It has been difficult to get the word out on our events. It takes so much time to do it electronically when there is so much to do in house each day. Any help spreading the word on any of our events would be much appreciated. We are working hard to get a new sign on the highway in collaboration with our neighboring businesses, The Mud Puddle Pottery Harpeth Art Studios and Fran's new Jewelry store. It will be a shopping center sign with a pro company and also a digital messaging for special events. This will cost a lot of money but it is very needed. It has hurt us substantially since the storm took the old sign away. Also we need to hire an electrician to help with projector mount to ceiling. It will be fun to have free in house movies someday. Students can play some pre show and intermission entertainment. Gigs and shows happen at venues large and small. Protect your instruments by building our community. By building a positive community comprised of passionate musicians, GearTrack serves as a place you can turn to in order to deter theft, or even to alert in the case of your rig getting lifted. With each item listed on GearTrack, we offer the ability to flag your instrument as stolen so that the industry as a whole is looking out for you. With GearTrack’s user accounts, you can gather and organize all of the information about all of your instruments all in one place. Photos, purchase details, history, and loads of details about each piece of gear can be viewed and accessed with the click of a button. If you’ve got a custom instrument - great!
