Announcements:
Reflections: How about those Irish People! WOW! That session on Sat was so fun! The 5th Irish Workshop the biggest ever and reports are that it was the best ever too! Folks are already asking about the next one. Well... If folks want it to happen again, we need some people to step up to market the next one. Not last minute either. It is scary enough that most everyone signs up last minute. If you are someone that could help in this area, please let it be known by August (or now), that you would help with the marketing which starts no later than Jan 2014 (right when we are amidst planning our 2nd annual Old Time Music Event!) The Irish dust is settling; There were set backs and fires to put out, but the saving grace was the sponsorships and donations. I almost gave up, but thanks to sponsors and the mystery person with blue ribbons of encouragement. Without yours support this event wouldn't have happened.

Welcome to the May 2013 issue of IB! It's the biggest announcement IBMA has made about Fan Fest since we can remember: an all-star line up starring some the industry's greatest and most revered talents, all in Raleigh, all for IBMA and the Bluegrass Trust Fund. We are excited and proud to announce the first three acts in our Wide Open Bluegrass festival line up for the World of Bluegrass festival September 27-28 in this current issue of IB. Click through and keep reading to see for yourself who it is! Also in this issue: Bill Conger talks with bluegrass greats Peter Rowan, Bobby Osborne, Jeremy Garrett (The Infamous Stringdusters), Don Rigsby, and Chris Henry about how traditional bluegrass is being kept alive, its greatest threats, and where they see the future of the genre heading. May is Membership Month at IBMA, and we are inviting everyone to come pick in our circle, share in our picnic, and sit on our blanket. We want everyone who loves bluegrass to become a member! Join, or re-new your membership by calling the IBMA office: 1-800-GET-IBMA and visit www.IBMA.org for details. What's more, this issue has information about Bluegrass Nation featuring some of the genre's most talented artists in the new Backyard Bluegrass Sessions, the Board's spring meeting highlights, and what showcases will look like during the World of Bluegrass in Raleigh, NC in September. Welcome to the June 2013 issue of IB! In this issue... For bluegrass fans, June is synonymous with Bluegrass Festivals in the dictionary (or should be!). This June celebrates a special festival, 40 years old: The Festival of the Bluegrass in Lexington, Kentucky. Produced by Bob and Jean Cornett, this dream-turned-reality is running strong, and it continues to be a family affair. Our feature goes behind the scenes of one big, happy, family festival that belongs, in spirit, to the faithful fans who attend every year. We bluegrass lovers have known this for quite some time: The banjo is pretty darn neat. But, it has taken the rest of the music world a little longer to recognize it! As the instrument gains popularity in mainstream music, it is now being implemented as part of the curriculum at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. As The Infamous Stringdusters' banjoist Chris Pandolfi writes for IB, "the bluegrass secret is out, and leading institutions like Berklee have opened their doors to the aspiring pickers of the world." You know the old adage: If you want something done, ask someone who's busy. This fits musician/producer/engineer/teacher Stephen Mougin to a tee, and the success of his Dark Shadow Recording label is proving it, starting with the signing of dynamic group The Rigneys. Finally, you can find out who will host the 24th annual International Bluegrass Music Awards, the artists who have been invited to perform at the Bluegrass Ramble Showcases during World of Bluegrass, and we welcome Joe Lurgio from Boston to the IBMA staff on June 6. Reflections: May started with the First Friday Pickin' Party fundraiser; The next pickin' party & BBQ is Friday June 7. We never missed a beat when it rained for 2 Sat Yard Sales which benefitted our neighbors at Cave Springs Home. I can't thank everyone enough for helping and donating. Also because it rained, folks came inside the Fiddle & Pick (for the 1st time) to eat their BBQ (& they live in the neighborhood!).
This fellowship spawned a potential “Friends of Fiddle & Pick” group to help create some local awareness of what goes on at the center. The outreach fund, named “The Charles E Stuart Memorial fund”, has some funds once again thanks to folks supporting the BBQ & Plant Sales. Another boost was from young talent with big hearts and a performance “Kids 4 Kids concert” which really helped us so much to meet our goal! The 3rd Sat Arts Cruise provided a variety of art, music entertainment and the now famous “Grinnin' Pig” BBQ!
Announcements: Deanie Richardson's student, Ivy Philips continues to be the TN State Champion in her age group! We are proud of you both! June busts out with a First Friday Pickin' party on June 7 ; then on June 9 the final in a series of Second Sunday Writers nights. Hosted by Wood Newton with special appearance of Verlon Thompson on Sunday June 9. (The series takes a summer break then back again in the fall). The next Arts Cruise on June 15 will feature some open pickin' but get some BBQ and come inside to the air conditioning to enjoy a special vintage banjo demonstration by Clark Buehling inside at 1:00. (Bring Dad for a special BBQ and Banjo perhaps). The concert is free but we will take up a love offering for Clark. June 22 we look forward to the Jazz violin and Guitar workshops with Stephan Dudash and George Cole. Their band, George Cole and Eurocana will perform on Sat eve June 22. The concert is open to the public (it is free for workshop attendees) This is the only concert booked this summer, so please support this event. Be sure to look over the July “sneak peaks” and other items of interest at the end of the calendar. 4th of July fireworks party, Ukulele, firefly project, and more!

I am a fan of music festival, so I often watch shows held in my town. I feel disgusted if there are phone rings non-stop ringing. I just want to disable their phones by mobile phone jammer.

The Ultimate Bluegrass Business Experience World of Bluegrass 2013 Valued for decades by generations of bluegrass music professionals, the IBMA business conference is sometimes overlooked by younger members of our community - or by IBMA veterans who’ve been in years past and who may think they’ve heard it all. But here’s a fact: our business and the wider entertainment and media world are in the midst of revolutionary change. Either we make the change or we get changed by it. Everybody needs new tools and resources to get the most out of their ventures, whether it’s a music company, an agency or a DIY band. And we all need connections, relationships and mentorships to realize our potential. The IBMA conference is where you’ll learn the latest thinking, tactics and technology, and it’s where you’ll have relaxed opportunities to meet leading bluegrass label heads, festival bookers, managers and attorneys. The conference is the perfect compliment to IBMA’s famous nighttime showcases; it’s about how the music will get to the people. Darin and Brooke Aldridge participate in a DJ taping, 2010 “I started coming 1995 primarily to jam, and I did attend a DJ seminar. From then on I was hooked. This event is about the business of this music. I come to learn. I need it to connect with other radio folks, with label reps, other writers and musicians, and business folks in general. I come for the seminars, meetings, and general hallway networking you just can't get anywhere else. Showcases and Fan Fest is just icing on the cake." - Bill Foster, WAMU Bluegrass Country "Coming from far away countries, visiting the US, it is often a difficult choice when and where to go to take in as much of the bluegrass world as possible. But immersing yourself in everything that goes on around the music can only be done by attending IBMA’s business conference. At no other place and time on earth I have learned so much about our music, and this year’s edition in Raleigh will be no Swedish bluegrass band G2 exception, I am sure!” Rienk Janssen, European Bluegrass Music Association, The Netherlands Please consider adding World of Bluegrass to your business's needs. With seminars, the Gig Fair, Exhibit Hall, DJ & Artist and Agents & Talent Buyers receptions, constituency meetings and more, your attendance at the Business Conference will allow your business opportunities to grow. To register for the World of Bluegrass Business Conference now, please click here. e2.ma/click/invyd/mi629/i7aofb Or, you may call us at 888-GET-IBMA. Watch a bonus clip of the Steep Canyon Rangers asking you to be there in Raleigh! e2.ma/click/invyd/mi629/yzbofbWe will see you there! IBMA 608 W. Welcome to the October 2013 issue of IB! It's hard to believe, but another World of Bluegrass is in the books! However, we at IBMA feel that this one was just a tad more memorable than ones in recent memory. Our new host city of Raleigh, North Carolina rolled out the red carpet, and then some. There were banners in the streets, bluegrass music heard over the public speakers downtown, and crowded streets with festival goers eager for live bluegrass music. From the Awards Show, to the new facilities, to the sold out shows at the Red Hat Amphitheater - it was a year to celebrate. In this issue, you'll get a great recap from IBMA's Executive Director, Nancy Cardwell, a complete list of award recipients and a recap of the legendary Awards Show, and photos of the event. Be sure to stop by Facebook to check out the full photo album of great shots! Also in this issue: A new ivy league university president has the bluegrass world buzzing, Leadership Bluegrass 2014 is looking for applicants, and the Seldom Scene return to a famed D.C. area hot spot. Get caught up on Bluegrass Music Industry News, and find some new tunes in Fresh Sounds! To those who were in Raleigh with us, we hope you thoroughly enjoyed your time at World of Bluegrass. To those of you who were unable to make it, we'll save you a spot for next year: September 30-October 4, 2014 in Raleigh. Happy reading! Do you Tweet or Facebook? Be sure to "Like" and/or "Follow" IBMA and Bluegrass Nation (@ Intlbluegrass) for all bluegrass-related news. Welcome to the November 2013 issue of IB! November marks the month to give thanks. And while we believe giving thanks should be a year-round gig, we're still happy we have the opportunity to express our gratitude to you, our readers, this month. Thank you for all you do in support of bluegrass music; whether you're playing it, listening to it, writing about it, crafting instruments that create it, recording it, promoting it,or simply loving it, we are grateful for you! Before you set out to conquer your holiday shopping list, to brine the turkey, or to tune your instrument, take a couple minutes to dive in to our latest issue of IB. In keeping up with the theme for the month, we give big thanks to our sponsors and the big playmakers who helped make World of Bluegrass 2013 so successful. We hear from two sides of the bluegrass world: Joe Mullins and Junior Sisk speak on their collaboration on hallowed Hall of Fame songs, and progressive 'grassers Yonder Mountain String Band talk excitedly about their latest game-changing EP. We also give you a dose of Bluegrass Industry News, try to convince you why social media is your friend, and how to find out more about healthcare insurance since the Affordable Care Act came to pass. Lastly, learn about how a recent natural disaster affected musicians and a beloved performance ground in Colorado and how you can help, see more photos of World of Bluegrass 2013, and more! Print out a copy, pour yourself a cup of joe, and get caught up on the freshest news in bluegrass! e2.ma/click/ijoee/mi629/69orlbDo you Tweet or Facebook? November Reflections: Reflections on Verlon Thompson in concert... A long time ago, I heard a wise man (Charles Stanley) say: "Problems, can lead to growth...with God... that good times could never provide". I believe his statement even though of course I would not like to have so many problems. Right? Who does? Well, that statement got me thinking this... "The problems that I have today, are because of the miracles that I wished for yesterday" ! It is true. The Musical Heritage Center aka... Fiddle & Pick, is taking on a life of its own and it is a beautiful but sometimes scary thing. I witnessed a whole lot of miracles on Sat night at the Fiddle & Pick. A whole lot of support of the folks that also believe in the mission of this place. Food and wine and silent auction donations! Support and help from Friends (Julie & Shelly) from my home town and some of our Fiddle & Pick volunteers that stepped up to help. Kathy, Wendy & Rick, Ron & Stephanie, Bob, Donna, Erin, Heidi & Robert, Charles, I know I am forgetting folks, but you know I love and appreciate you all! The night couldn't have been any better! Kids that I saw play an instrument for the first time not too long ago, were now the opening act for a show. It made me realize that miracles keep coming and yes; so will more problems and that is okay. I can keep growing from this kind of place too. Verlon was the initiator of playing a benefit concert for the Musical Heritage Center. A most entertaining evening, watching him unfolding his life stories in a way that is not self consuming; but rather in a way that shares and relates common threads to the ears of the audience minds' eye. He gave so much of himself. Story telling and singing from the heart. And the man can PICK! He played for a real long time because he knew that the folks wanted to hear more and more. He just has a magical way of entertaining that outdoes what the others try to do. He is real. We are so incredibly blessed by his evening performance. I encourage everyone to support his future performances and to buy his CDs. He is worthy. You will love his next show and his recorded music. And remember that he did this for no pay. He is a generous man that asked for nothing but to give a benefit show to us. This was another miracle for us. Along the way I have come across new friends and influences. I have to say the encouragement of Denise Reagan and Rickey Chick Marquardt helped get me going with this plan. Denise helped me see it through with incredible detail and patience. She is a saint to me. She deserves the credit for this successful turnout. She is always positive and thoughtful. She can put herself in others shoes faster than most. She is a selfless giver of her time for the mission of this place. I don't think she knows her own greatness. Our neighbors at the Mud Puddle had a wonderful art sale “Holiday Village”; please continue to support them this season by shopping local when looking for those special gifts. Important Announcements and Upcoming Events Help for a good trade??? The marquee sign is spectacular; only problem is that it is hard to program. Maybe someone has a knack for this remote thing? Welcome to the December 2013 issue of IB! As we jam away 2013, we must remark what an incredible year it was for bluegrass, and for IBMA. We've seen new faces and new places, and we're encouraged by the growth and enthusiasm for the world's best music. Thank you for supporting bluegrass, and we look forward to making more wonderful music and memories in 2014! In this last International Bluegrass for 2013, we get a glimpse of "Country Family Reunion: Simply Bluegrass" with interviews from Ricky Skaggs, Larry Black, and Bill Anderson (complete with a dazzling photo gallery). We re-cap what it was like to be at both nights of Ricky Skaggs' Artist-In-Residence performances at the Country Music Hall of Fame (you won't believe who he had for guests!), and IBMA staff member Joe Lurgio explains his role and goals as Membership Director. The IBMA doesn't stand alone in supporting bluegrass worldwide, which is why the IBMA Trust Fund and the Foundation for Bluegrass are vital institutions to the music. Learn a little more about both by reading a piece by Wayne Rice on a banjo-pickin' seminary professor, and see who has been named the new Executive Director of the Foundation for Bluegrass! Please kindly consider a donation to either, or both, institutions in your holiday giving. Lastly, the American Music Abroad program has sent many musicians overseas for a good cause: To spread culture, joy, connectivity, and music. Della Mae's Courtney Hartman recounts the band's experience from last year. Applications for the program are due January 6th. As always, get your bluegrass music industry news from the U.S. and around the globe, and get caught up on Fresh Sounds. Be sure to click on all the ornaments on our IBMA holiday wreath to spread a little bluegrass cheer! Print out a copy, pour yourself a cup of egg nog, and get caught up on the freshest news in bluegrass! Do you Tweet or Facebook? Be sure to "Like" and/or "Follow" IBMA and Bluegrass Nation (@ Intlbluegrass) for all bluegrass-related news.
