Professional Development Workshop for the Emerging Visual Artist
The visual artist may encounter barriers to sharing their work. Getting artwork out of the house and into the community often requires stepping away from a primary passion for creating and stepping into the murky world of descriptions, artist statements, image resolution, record keeping, and exhibit restrictions based on hanging systems.
This workshop is designed to give the emerging visual artist the tools and competencies needed to be successful in the realms of showing, documenting, and sharing their work with others. Participants will learn about the significance of the portfolio and what it should contain. They will also learn about writing the artist statement and maintaining vitae. Participants will also receive tips from a professional and will have an opportunity to photograph their art in order to begin amassing an electronic image library. A discussion of framing, presentation, and preparing work for exhibition will also be included.
Participants are invited to bring a digital camera they typically use and a piece of their artwork no larger than 16”x20”. In addition, participants may bring along a bio, artist statement, or other professional document that they would like assistance with or have an interest in sharing. This professional development workshop will be conducted by Yvette Renée Cowden and is made possible with support from the Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities.
Saturday, March 16, 10:00 am - 3:00pm
Sarratt Art Studios, 207 Sarratt Student Center, Nashville, TN 37240
Send the completed registration form along with a check for $15 to VSA Tennessee, P O Box 545, Sweetwater, TN 37874 in order to register. Seating is limited to the first 10 registrants. For more information contact Pam Weston at p_weston@bellsouth.net or (717) 515-2336

Governor Bill Haslam tours the Institute and visits classrooms in the Early Learning Center The Institute was honored to receive a personal visit from Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam on Thursday, January 31. While touring the facility, the governor learned about the Institute’s educational model of engagement and inclusion as well as the Developmental Pediatric and Research Centers. The governor had a ball engaging with children and teachers in two Early Learning Center classrooms. He “mailed” a letter in Classroom 10's handmade post office and accepted a cake iced with the Tennessee state flag baked for him by the children in Classroom 11. Additionally, Halsam met with members of the Siskin family and addressed an enthusiastic crowd of Institute board and advisory committee members, parents, staff, friends and community leaders. The highlight of the afternoon was a presentation by two children of framed artwork made especially for him. To see the wonderful photo of this moment and for other images from the visit, click here. e2.ma/click/v91pg/bucci/f14hgb

ETTAC workshop on literacy software The East Tennessee Technology Access Center is having a training for parents and teachers on software used in our new free Reading Lab to help middle and high school students who are reading below grade level. These students don’t necessarily have to have defined disabilities. They can either come to ETTAC or use the software at home or school. Two school systems, Monroe and Sevier Counties have already signed up for the Reading Lab, and we are looking for additional school systems to get it free of charge. Please help me get the word out about this new program. Attached is the press release. Putting LAMP to Work: AAC Strategies to Promote Communication Date: March 8th Time: 8:30 - 3:00 PM at ETTAC Participants get an overview of the LAMP treatment approach, learn why its emphasis on consistent motor plans is uniquely suited to children with autism, and explore the features of AAC devices that support teaching and building language in those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Videos are used to illustrate LAMP therapy components, including the use of multi-sensory strategies to teach the meanings of words. 1-Day Workshop/ASHA CEUs: .5 What is LAMP? Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP) is a therapeutic approach based on neurological and motor learning principles. LAMP gives individuals who are non-verbal or have limited verbal abilities a method of independently and spontaneously expressing themselves in any setting. Because autism often includes dysfunction in motor planning and sensory processing, LAMP strategies are proving effective when used in conjunction with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices that stress consistent motor plans for accessing vocabulary. As communication skills improve, social engagement in children with autism often increases, problematic behaviors can decline, and some children exhibit increased verbal speech. Cost: $79, click here to register. Call ETTAC at 865-219-0130 for directions or questions.
