March is Women’s History Month – a time to commemorate and celebrate the achievements of women who have helped to shape the world in which we live. The Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) has many resources for those who want to learn more about the roles Tennessee women have played throughout history. For example, in the suffragist movement, Tennessee cast the decisive vote to ratify the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote. TSLA’s online exhibit, “'Remember the Ladies’: Women Struggle for an Equal Voice” www.tennessee.gov/tsla/exhibits/suffrage highlights that pivotal time in the country’s history. TSLA also houses a treasure trove of letters, diaries and other writings by and about women that shed light on their roles in different periods of history. A guide to the most pertinent collections can be viewed online at www.tn.gov/tsla/history/guides/guide07.htm . Many fascinating historical records are available online or at TSLA’s building, which is located at 703 Seventh Avenue North, directly west of the State Capitol in downtown Nashville. The library building is open from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, with the exception of state holidays. To view TSLA’s home page, visit: www.tn.gov/tsla . TSLA is part of the Tennessee Department of State, which is directed by Secretary of State Tre Hargett.
