Good deal, Babs. Not sure if any are on here.
The CIT Program is an excellent one and one unheard of when I started out 30 years ago. These highly trained cops are truly unheralded heroes who bridge the gap from the mental health consumer to the services they so desperately need.
Booking the ill into a Jail, as a housekeeping/broken window measure, is an ineffective stop-gap measure that solves no problems. For either them, or us.
I've seen these professionals work their magic. 30 years ago we'd just load the 441 (A mental health consumer) and take them to the Jail for housing to protect them from themselves, and others. I don't fit the CIT mold, but I damn sure utilize the hell out of them every chance I get.
Sad that law enforcement is doing more psychiatric work than the psychiatrists after that task was dumped on LE when the Tennessee Legislature continually failed to fund diagnoses, treatment and care for those less mentally fortunate than the rest of us.
Seems we have a never ending budget to treat a broken leg, or a broken arm, for free, yet we have abysmally failed to offer treatment, for free, to those with a broken mind.
