Byron Looper, who killed TN Sen. Tommy Burks in 1998, found dead in cell Looper sought political spotlight Jun. 27, 2013 Written by Brian Haas
Byron Looper has been called many things.
Kingfish — his childhood nickname.
(Low Tax) — which he legally adopted as his middle name, parentheses and all.
King — what he called himself when he became Putnam County’s property assessor.
On Wednesday morning, Looper, 48, was found dead in his cell at the Morgan County Correctional Complex, where he was serving life without parole for the 1998 murder of his political opponent, State Sen. Tommy Burks.
