So, I'll be in town April 19-22. I've recently become kind of a food snob and am branching out with different foods and preparations.
If money is no object (which, it isn't for this trip) and you're picking the best place in Chattanooga to get really good, well-prepared food, where is it, and why? This will be for a party of two ... romantic ambiance is a plus ...
Also, good wine selection is key ...

The St. John's has not disappointed the times I've been there. Excellent food, good wine list, and upstairs seating can be quite nice....

You gotta try Table 2 Grill & Lounge. GREAT food, GREAT service, and a decent wine list. Great place...it's now officially 'on the list'.

Table Two is on my list of "taking Star out on a date" restaurants.

Table 2 has been o.k. in my opinion... but Back Inn Cafe is NICE. Great food, not a huge menu but great quality. Great service. Great atmosphere (make a reservation and request a table with a view of the courtyard, mention it's for a romantic evening) and good drinks. Also if you get too drunk you can just stumble upstairs to one of the rooms!

Of all the "nice" places to eat in Chattanooga, the only one I actually HAVE been to is Back Inn Cafe (well, I've been to Tony's as well, and I like it fine). I was, unfortunately, pretty unimpressed with the Back Inn Looks like the majority is leaning toward Table 2 ... Any suggestions that are really good, but kind of obscure, and even out in the surrounding area (i.e. outside downtown Chattanooga)?

What is this Table Two of which you speak? What worm - you haven't heard or been to one of the hippest, newest, hottest restaurants in town? It's over by where Wharehouse Billiards and the Bay used to be. It's probably where you should have taken someone for their b-day instead of Porters.

I have never been, nor shall I ever be, hip. I don't follow trends, and know nothing of fashion, so things like this pass me by.
But I do have an anniversary coming up.

Don't forget about 212, always had excellent food there, good service too. Been awhile since I've been to St. Johns but always a good experience there.
Ooooo! I almost forgot! Terra Nostras, EXCELLENT wine, perfect for after dinner.

Agreeing with Red, to probably no-ones suprise. 212 is my favorite place to take out-of town guests for relatively upscale food. (I sense 'shot composing a reply) They are also one of the, now two, restaurants in Chattanooga to hold the Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence. Terra Nostra is a very good dining destination also. Quite good food and a nice, if not very extensive, wine list.

I've eaten at 212, and so has my wife. Neither of us was very impressed. It wasn't bad, by any means, but nothing special either.
(Of course, I for one am not very impressed with any fancy food, anyway. I rarely find it worth the higher price.)

Personally, I prefer Carraba's, both for atmosphere and food. The wines are decent to good (that I've had). That's if I'm "impressing".
I still prefer a good steak over anything else, however.

I had thought Michaels was a good place to eat back in the day, but of course is now gone poof. I also liked Ocean Ave for the weekends, which is of course also .. gone.
Hell, is the Read House still open?

Me either. We went there for a friend's birthday not long ago. It was my first time there - I don't think we'll go back. I didn't think it was all that. I've had better at J. Alexander's, Bluewater and even Carrabas.

I recently had a heinous lunch at Back Inn Cafe. The Caesar salad was 30% skanky yellowish romaine that I would throw away at home. The lobster bisque was bereft of lobster. I've heard good things about Table Deux, but would opt for St. John's personally. Southside Grille is a roll of the dice with the new ownership.

I like Table 2, but mostly for drinking and hanging out. The loud music and atmosphere doesn't really make for nice dinner ambiance. I have enjoyed the food, but by far St. Johns is my favorite for a nice dinner.

Went there last week. Neither steak (T-Bone and bone-in fillet) we has was all that good, at least not for the $190 tab for two the meal ended up costing us. Mushrooms were wonderful, and the blueberry crisp with vanilla ice cream (I passed on the sour cream ice cream - yuck) was excellent. But the steak, not worth the money. At those prices, they only get one shot, and they blew it.

"Bone in fillet"? WTF??? The word fillet means no damn bones. I prefer a steak with the bone in as it's much more flavorful, still "bone in fillet" is a true oxymoron.

Wow! 190 bucks for 2 people........That's mad expensive..... (Especially if it's not very good) ~J Went there last week. Neither steak (T-Bone and bone-in fillet) we has was all that good, at least not for the $190 tab for two the meal ended up costing us.

As it was explained to us, the cut where the fillet comes from has one piece at the very end with the bone. Its like the end piece, and is supposed to be better because of that. Could have fooled us.

It's a filet with part of the t-bone still attached.

I haven't been to Back Inn Cafe in a couple of years but the last few times we went they had really screwed with the menu to the point that I wasn't sure what to think. Way overpriced for the quality of the food. When they opened back in the mid-nineties it was one of our favorite places. They specialized in Italian back then and did a great job.
Tony's is good depending on what you order. Their sauce based pasta dishes are excellent but their baked pasta dishes have been watery everytime I get them. I don't know if it's because they don't drain the pasta well enough or if they cook it too hot and fast but the sausage penne I got a couple of weeks ago was really really watery. Too bad cause the sausage was great.
Would definitely give St Johns a shot if I were you. I like Bluewater Grille also. I've also heard some good things about Hennen's. Anybody been there?

We haven't been impressed with Hennen's. We had lunch at Bluewater today - Seared Tuna. It was soooo good! They also serve brunch until 4:00 on Saturday and Sunday.
