Subject: "Play It Safe" Video Contest : Perspectives on Concussion in Youth Sports, Institute of Medicine What can you say in 60 seconds? The Institute of Medicine is having a video contest to capture perspectives on concussions in youth sports. See www.iom.edu/playitsafe for full details. "Play It Safe" Video Public Service Announcement Contest Sports superstars aren’t the only ones who need to worry about concussions. Up to 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions and other traumatic brain injuries are reported in the United States every year. A report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Research Council (NRC) finds that youth athletes don’t always report their injuries or may feel pressured to get back in the game too soon, and the report recommends fostering a culture of safety that encourages athletes to speak up about their symptoms and heal fully before returning to play. The “Play It Safe” video Public Service Announcement contest from the IOM and the NRC is designed to raise awareness about sports-related concussions among youth. If you are between 13 and 22 years old, you can participate and help spread the word! We’re looking for a one-minute video on sports concussions, based on one of the three themes below: § How are you changing the culture of sports around concussions? What are you doing to overcome the “tough it out”/“playing hurt” mindset? § What message do you have for your teammates, coaches, and parents about concussions? § How are your teammates and coaches working together to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion? (You may submit multiple videos. However, the same video may not be entered in more than one category.) Contest Rules § The contest is for ages 13 to 22. Entries will be divided into three school-age categories: middle school, high school, and post-high school. § Entries must be received by May 30, 2014, to be eligible. § There will be one winning entry from each school-age category. § The three winning entries will each receive a $300 gift card. § Videos will be judged by the IOM/NRC on their creativity in content and presentation, their potential public appeal and interest, and their effectiveness in conveying information about sports-related concussions in an effective and entertaining way. § Judging will take place in early June by the IOM/NRC, and winners will be announced by June 12. The decision of the judges will be final. § § The complete contest rules and procedures can be found at www.iom.edu/PlayItSafeRules. For more information on sports-related concussions in youth, including the 2013 IOM/NRC report Sports-Related Concussions in Youth: Improving the Science, Changing the Culture, a question and answer booklet, and a quiz to test what you know about concussions, visit www.iom.edu/concussions. If you have any questions, please contact the PSA Video Contest staff at YouthSportsConcussions@nas.edu.

Subject: FW: ASL and Open Captioning, War Horse, June 8 Open captioning and American Sign Language will be provided for War Horse, a play with music, on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. Running time is two hours and 45 minutes, with one intermission. Tickets for ASL and open captioning seats are $65 each, a $15 discount, and will remain on hold for this offer until by Monday, June 2. War Horse received theatre’s highest honors in London and New York and was the most successful production in the history of the Lincoln Center. The focus of the play is on horses who were sent to battle in World War I. War Horse tells the story about the deep bond between a boy and his horse Joey, who are separated by the war, then reunited on the battlefield. Full-sized puppets give life to breathing, galloping, and charging horses which are strong enough for men to ride. Joey is the central character in the play, surrounded by a huge cast and visionary design which heightens the impact of the action. To complement the play, TPAC partnered with the Tennessee State Museum to create an exhibit on the G Level, one level below the main lobby of Jackson Hall. Enjoy this striking display of artifacts, photographs, art, and video while you’re at TPAC. “Like Gone with the Wind, War Horse … is virtually critic-proof. It’s a force of nature, or, more accurately, a show about the nature of man, which the co-directors, Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, shape with the utmost control and artistry. Everything about it works,” said The New Yorker. Use one of the promo code links below. This will automatically apply your $15 discount. 1. Click on War Horse. 2. On the next page, click on Buy Tickets. 3. Select the performance date and time of June 8 at 1:00 p.m. 4. Mega CAREER Fair: The Workforce Investment Network (WIN) and the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) will hold a Disability and Veterans Mega CAREER Fair on June 26 from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Pipkin Building on the Mid-South Fairgrounds in Memphis (940 Early Maxwell). WIN and TDLWD invite you and your organization to participate in this event, as a significant number of job seekers are likely to attend. There will be space for several dozen employers, training providers, health screenings and community-based organizations. Registration or attendance fees are not required. This will be a great opportunity for employers to find job-ready candidates who, if eligible and hired, may qualify their employer for tax incentives via the Work Opportunity Tax Credit and On-the-Job Training (OJT) grants. It will also be an excellent event for training providers to source candidates for their training and educational programs.
Another noteworthy event feature is the inclusion of an interview area, which will enable sponsors to conduct on-the-spot interviews with candidates. If interested in participating, please complete the RSVP form by May 26 (attached to this edition) and fax it to Phyllis Brunson at 901-636-7950 or e-mail phyllis.brunson@workforceinvestmentnetwork.com. Please also indicate if you are interested in using the interview area.
