Wayne and I have decided we really like this place. Genghis Grill – The Mongolia Stir Fry - is located at 138 Market St. I was disappointed when I saw what was previously done by tenants to the old Altruda’s spot, but Genghis has certainly taken that space making improvements and returning it to a nice restaurant. It looks great! Upon being seated, you are given a menu and a bowl. You can select one of the Genghis recipes or simply make up your own. You just take the bowl into Khan’s Kitchen, go through the line and make your selections. The first section is protein. There are many containers of uncooked meats and fish such as steak, pork, chicken, turkey, scallops, crab, and shrimp, as well as others. Choose the ones you want and put them into your bowl. Next are the spices. Some of the many choices are cayenne, lemon pepper, Cajun, garlic, ginger and red pepper. Use as much or as little as you like. www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_112895.asp

Wow sounds like an interesting place. I I would love to try it out sometime....I would be intimidated in regards to knowing which spices to mix together and sauces but, I like the idea of picking out my own meats and veggies.

The Mongolian BBQ format isn't too intimidating, but it is a bit odd. I like it because you pick exactly what you want. Don't want onions? Don't put any in the bowl. Want extra pepper sauce? Put it in the bowl. Of course you don't know what's in the sauces up front, but you don't know that from a menu either, so it really is no different.

Chris and I tried it out this afternoon and loved it!! I forgot to ask them if you could bring your own stuff...I am sorry I was intimidated at first about which spices to mix and which sauces to use but, at first they give you a menu to look over and I liked one thing that had a lot of "7" things in it so, the spices and sauces have the number that correlates with the flavor it will make so, it made me feel a little more confident about my choices. When I got to the dragon sauce I asked the chef if another sauce combined with it would be good. I told him I liked spicy and he pointed out this ginger something sauce so, I got both and it was excellent. As far as meats I got sausage, shrimp, scallops, and seasoned cod. veggies only peppers, onions, green onions, bamboo shoots...I saw broccoli and I almost put some in but, didn't. I wished I had instead of the bamboo shoots (that would have just been better with the sauce I chose I think) and fried rice. The thing I like about the place is that I know even if when I go back I put the exact same things in it and the same sauces I know the flavor will probably be different. BTW Janet we mentioned we came there because we read your positive review and our waitress said that a lot of people had said that and business had really been picking up. They just got their liquor license I think she said yesterday.

We'll be hosting a Notta Lunch there this Friday, as well. Based on Janet's review.

Sounds intersting.
Do you get anything else besides teh "bowl" like soup/salad?
and was one bowl more than enough? or do most people go for the all you can eat?
I'm just worried since i liek a lot of differenct seasonings that i would mix a bunch of crap and it ending up tasting like crap lol

For me one bowl is more than enough - I've had to get a to-go box both times. In the two times we've been there, I've only seen one person get the all you can eat. You don't have to tell them when you order - just get the one bowl and if you still want more, have them bring you another bowl to fill. I think I don't have much in the bowl when I see if emptied onto the grill, but by the time they add the "starch" - I have more than I can eat.
By the way, I've seen the signs on the wall, so once you fill that second bowl, you aren't allowed a to-go box.

kid, that was my worry (the spices) when I was there. What I did was they originally give you a menu to look at. Find one of the meals that is similar to your taste you don't have to copy the ingredients but, if it says it has dragon sauce and hot pepper as its only seasonings and sauce....when you put yours together only use those. They have numbers on the sauces and spices so you know which ones will compliment each other. Also, the chef is at the end of the line and you can ask questions. Keep in mind...you can always add spices but, you can't take them off. I told him that I wanted something spicy but with a little bit of sweetness too and he told me about another sauce to add with the dragon sauce and mine was delicious. For me one bowl was plenty. I took half of it home with me too.

Make sure you don't pour the sauce directly onto your food, because someone will scold you.
Use the little ramekins. Our server told us that last night, but some people weren't listening.
