A friend recommended a restaurant in Cleveland to us – Nelli Belle’s. They have two locations, one at 5803 Waterlevel Highway and the one we went to at 2382 N. Ocoee Street. I remember several years ago eating at a Mexican restaurant in this location – but I can’t remember the name of it. We went for a Saturday evening dinner. Nelli Belle’s motto is “Cookin’ the way Grandma used to!” The Appetizers are pretty much standard fare: cheese sticks, chicken nuggets, hot wings, onion rings (and peels) plus a few other items priced from $3.99 to $8.99 for a sampler platter. They also had chicken salad, sweet potato fries and fried green tomatoes as appetizers. Nelli Belle’s has chili, a soup of the day and bowls of pinto beans, along with several salads. Some of the salads sound intriguing – grape salad, tropical grilled or fried chicken salad, and Frito/Chili Salad. Soups range from $1.99 to $3.99 while the salads are $2.59 to $7.99. They sell homemade chicken salad, egg salad and slaw in half pints, pints and quarts. Wayne and I decided to try the fried mushrooms ($4.99). They weren’t bad; crisp on the outside, but a few weren’t cooked all the way through. However, we would order them again. Wayne always shies away from fried green tomatoes since most places cut them very thick, taking away their crunchiness. If they cook long enough to be really crunchy, then the outside is overdone. We would like them better if they were served thinly sliced. www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_114707.asp

We've eaten there several times for lunch only in the last two months but have always missed the chocolate pie, which my sister, who lives in Cleveland, says is excellent. They sell out early during the lunch hour, and the person who makes them comes in after her other job and bakes them. My sister says the chocolate and coconut pies are worth the trip alone to Nelli Belle's. And I have had the fried okra there -- and it was good too. We were lucky to get a fresh batch with plenty of large pieces of okra.
