How about the Jolly Ox (Steak & Ale). Do you know/remember why it was called the Jolly Ox? It was called the JOLLY OX because of TN state law. TN would not allow an alcoholic beverage to be used in the name of a place of business. In other states JOLLY OX was the name of the bar and the restaurant was called STEAK & ALE. Remeber the meat cleavers they had with the menu on them?

Years ago, there was a restaurant on Cherokee Blvd. located between the Loft and Black Angus but on the opposite side of the street. Does anyone recall what it was?

Does anyone remember Phat Wraps downtown? It used to be where Raw is. . . . I loved that place. They had one of the best quesadillas.

God, I loved Phat Wraps.
Trey Paty is now a realtor, I think. He was married to a girl I worked with a UP.

Anyone remember a little Italian place called "Momma Theresa's"? It was in the shopping center on Brainerd Rd., along with Service Merchandise & a few other <now closed> businesses. They were doing the fresh loaves of bread with real butter & olive oil & spices WAY before anyone else in the area, and the food was amazing. We used to take my grandmother there for her birthday each year (she was born the same day / month / year as President Reagen), and we always had a terrific meal. Even though I love(d) all Italian food, there was never anything better than their lasagna. Mmmm... I can almost smell it now, and my mouth is beginning to water.

Yes...Momma Theresa's was great! It was there when I was working across the complex at Silver Scoop Ice Cream Shoppe...hand-churned ice cream on freshly made waffle cones (with a malted milk ball in the bottom to keep the ice cream from dripping out of the cone)!
What I wouldn't give for a malted milk ball ice cream malt....MALT OVERDOSE!

Rossbilly, I still have a small freezer purchased at Service Merchandise in Brainerd Village! Philco brand. It is not a chest type that opens on the top, it has a door on the front. I am very glad it has worked well over the years. I also remember Lottie's shoes. And wasn't Leader at Brainerd Village where Office Depot is now?

wow - I was JUST trying to remember what used to be where the Office Depot now resides... and we also have one of the upright freezers - SO much easier to get stuff into / out of Hmmm - are there ever Notta cookouts? Of course, I <thought> you were about to mention a 'small freezer of delicious ice cream' LOL (sorry, still fighting the urge!)

I used to really like a place called "Mr Steak" on 153 near Northgate, circa 1980. I think the restaurant was a chain but I also think this outlet was locally owned. Great steaks though and they had a drive up window.

This is a very old eating place. Does anyone know where the "farmer's market" is on Lee Hwy? it's beside Classic Boutique, before Ryan's, going East. it's across the Hwy from the children's home. Well, I recall when it was a very busy breakfast place. It had a counter and booths. This was before Waffle House, Huddle House or IHOP. It had to be mid 70's!

Probably Butch's Ham and Egger. Butch had about seven of these restaurants around Chattanooga during that time.

Justin, that doesn't sound like it. It seems the place was "lee hwy" diner or something like that. on the other hand, who was Butch?

Butch was a restaurateur with enough credit to sink himself. His restaurants served greasy biscuits and gravy along with the rest of your average breakfast fare. He opened several of these in secession and they actually did fairly well for about two years and then went bust about the time Hardee's began serving breakfast.
Now that I think about it a little more the restaurant you are asking about was operated by a relative of the guy that owned the Orange Hut over in Red Bank. It wasn't a Butch's Ham and Egger. I think you are correct in that it might have been Lee Hwy Diner.

Going wa-a-a-ay back, who remembers The Glass House? And it's last location, still in use but in quite a different business.

Marvell and I are the same age :-), and I do remember the Glass House. but can not recall the location... I want to think Brainerd Rd.... I look forward to your reminding me. Did it not have the glass brick at the front door? For anyone else old enough to remember, The Beacon was on McCallie, just east of the viaduct. Had a "lighthouse" with beacon at the entrance, hence the name.

Justin, this Butch fellow, was his last name Lindsey? Butch Lindsey was a stable at the Orange Hut, could have been a partner. Maybe he was the person who opened the Lee Hwy Diner or whatever it was called. In fact, after I posted the other day, I got to thinking the Lee Hwy place had timber and coal trucks parked in the drive sometimes. It may have been a truck stop type place. Keep in mind we are talking early to mid 70.

Butch Lindsey was a neigbor of mine and to the best of my knowledge he had nothing to do with the Ham and Egger.
Butch did operate a place called the Beer Jug which was a drive through beverage place located in White Oak on Dayton Blvd in a building that was previously a "Milk Jug." The Milk Jugs, a chain of drive through milk, bread, beer and cigarette stores, went on to become Golden Gallon.
Butch spent a few years in prison for robbing a bank. He was involved in this robbery somehow with a Mr. Jones who I had the pleasure of knowing also through his wife who was the office manager of a place I use to work many years ago. The last time I saw Mrs. Jones she was running Nikki's on Cherokee Blvd.
The fellow I remember running the restaurant on Lee Hwy was Lavon Pickle. He went to the same church I attended in White Oak.

I knew Butch Lindsey did some time. His mom passed away recently. Wasn't another fellow named Butch involved with the bank robbery? Did you know Butch Lindsey's wife? Yes, Milk Jug did become Golden Gallon but I didn't know Lindsey owned Beer Jug. How funny! Lavon Pickle. Lee Hwy Pickle Jar. (just kiddin)

Butch is at least ten years older than I am, maybe more. We didn't really know each other, more like we knew about each other. So, no, I never knew his wife. His sister was involved in local television during the 60s. I'm sorry to hear about his mom but I guess she was getting on in years. She was always a very nice lady. There were three people that I knew of involved in the bank robbery, Butch, Mr. Jones (I wish I could remember his first name, I think it was Bob) and Mr. Jones' son. I don't remember the son's name either. For years that little Milk Jug building had a sign out front that said "Butch Lindsey's Beer Jug." The sign was there for years after the buisness had closed. Nah, it wasn't the Pickle Jar.

Butch Lindsey's wife was a very pretty younger lady named Cris(I won't say her last name before she married Butch). she did some modeling. This Beer Jug, was it before Lindsey went to jail the 1st time or the 2nd time? Somewhere in between his sentences, he had an art store. I'm just wondering if it was in the Beer Jug building. I heard he is into antiques on the Southside these days.

The Beer Jug was open in the 70s and I think into the early 80s. The building was just south and on the opposite side of the road of where Kroger use to be.
