From the "Courts News Digest...... Senior U.S. District Judge R. Allan Edgar on Tuesday sentenced a Chattanooga man to longer than the maximum term called for in the federal sentencing guidelines for assaulting someone after a bankruptcy proceeding. The guidelines, which are advisory only, suggest a maximum sentence of less than three years, but Judge Edgar sentenced Ernest Wayne Dudley to four years in prison. The judge stressed the need to keep federal courts safe, to deter others who might commit violent acts in courts and to protect the public from the defendant when issuing the sentence. Mr. Dudley received probation in Hamilton County Criminal Court for the offense before he was prosecuted federally, records show.

From the story: received probation in Hamilton County Criminal Court for the offense No wonder you bolded those words. What is a criminal court for? Pulling that sort of thing in a courtroom? I don't understand that at all.
