HYDERABAD, India (Reuters) - Unable to come to terms with the death of their pet dog, an elderly couple in southern India committed suicide by hanging themselves, police said on Monday. The bodies of 67-year-old retired soldier C.N. Madanraj and his wife, Tarabai, 63, were found on Sunday in their home in a suburb of Hyderabad. Police said the childless couple had held a burial ceremony for their dog of 13 years, called "Puppy," and hosted a feast for friends before hanging themselves in their bedroom. "The couple described the grief over their pet dog in the suicide note they left on March 29," said police inspector V. Anantaiah. story

I love my animals but, I know that if they live 13 years they have had a long life in pet years and I should be thankful to have them for such a long time. I admit I went into a depressive state when I lost my cat "Kitty" but, I also lost my job and a close relative all in the same couple weeks and in the next month Sept 11th happened so, it was just a tough time period. But, I would never have thought to commit suicide!!!!
I didn't read the link does it say how their pet died? Was he a victim of the poisoned food scandal? It would be hard to live with myself if I knew the food I gave them killed them....but, still to commit suicide? I know I personally couldn't do it.

I understand their pain...but suicide?! They were probably at the point, for whatever reason, that something would have pushed them over the side.

I agree with Babs - this has to have been the straw that broke the camel's back. If one thing happening was enough to push them over the edge then they probably would not have lived long enough to marry.

It's not sad, it's complete and utterly stupid. I have no sympathy for people like this, and my only hope is that they did not reproduce before removing themselves from the gene pool.

It sounds perfectly reasonable, to me.
I am fortunate in the fact my Sweet, Sweet Brown cannot die, and my only problem sith such is reconciling with how she will feel when I pass of old age--our love and our bond is as Fierce as the futility of the California School System--then my children after me...but my love will make her strong enough to carry her through the centuries. I have Forseen this.
She is as Ageless as she is Brown.
I can only suggest as an afterthought for these folks that they simply should have chosen a superior companion.

Bah! If they really cared, twelve years ago they would have changed its name to "Dog"
