Skiptracer: It started out as Alan Golds
Actually, it started out as Brennan's, the 1st expansion the brothers ventured into after they started Yesterday's....

Regarding the present Parkway Billiards, Kordax remembers: ...it started out as Brennan's I didn't remember that name, K, but I do remember "Timothy's Staircase," combining the name of one of the brothers Hennen and the most prominent feature of club decor, the central paneled staircase.

Marvell, I stand corrected -- you be right on the name "Timothy's Staircase."
One of the interesting pieces of their decor choices at the time: they bought doors from Southeastern Salvage (located on Dodds Ave. at the time, I believe) and fastened them one after another to the ceiling making it look like a plushly pannelled old world spot .....

I remember Timothy's Staircase. Was that name before or after it was Alan Gold's?

Yeah, K, I remember the story about the paneling. I had looked at it and not realized that the paneling was actually standard wooden doors. Clever idea.
skiptracer, yeah, the place was Timothy's Staircase before it was Alan Gold's. I was never in it when the Hennens owned it, only later when it was Alan Gold's.
(don't even ask, Kordax!)

I didn't realize Alan Golds was no more. That was a great place and their restrooms were cleaner and better lit than any other bar I've ever been to.

Spastic, the Alan Gold location on Patten Parkway is no more but the Alan Gold location off Bailey Ave. may still be around, I'm not sure.

And a big wet kiss back at ya ....
Marvell, you may remember the shabby looking black & tan nightcub on Main St near the old US Mail routing center before the railroad overpass coming from Market heading toward Central -- I've forgotten the name. But it was a great spot where White folks & Black folks partied until 3:00 AM & after to the tunes of Mowtown & Beach sounds for a few years back in the late 60's / early 70's.
Back in the day, I used to work out in the summers with the Rossville/UT/New Orleans Saints legendary football star, Bobby Scott who always commanded a camp following stable of (as we said at the time) "the toughest girls" imaginable. Scott, entourage & I (I might have had the pre-wife unit in tow -- can't remember) breezed into this spot one night & were having per usual a fantastic time.
Do you remember that spot?
Lots of "he/she's" tried to cruise in there; I think Scott aquired several front teeth embedded in his fists after one tried his/her luck on him in the bathroom -- wouldn't happen that way today ....

Alan Gold's off of McCallie is still there...disorders are attended to on occasion. Usually "straight" guys who act all surprised and upset when "not-so-straight" guys hit on them.

LR, how funny. How could any straight person go there and not know?

Kordax asked: Marvell, you may remember the shabby looking black & tan nightcub on Main St near the old US Mail routing center... No, that doesn't click for me, I went into some strange places, but there were more such places than opportunities for me to investigate. I must say, Kordax, your experiences, between shady black and tan nightclubs and NFL stars, makes my youthful days look colorless and dull. You should write your memoirs. I would buy a copy.

I can't believe no one here remembers the Fuzzy Duck on 23rd street. One of those dives that had a bouncer at the door checking for knives and guns. No love for the Governors Lounge? What about Fantasy 2000 or whatever the heck it was called? Sports Page was the biggest hangout though. I can remember cutting some rugs on that small dance floor to some disco tunes. Of course it was all about the ladies. And whatever anyone ever tells you about marrying someone you've met in a bar BELIEVE them.

Those both definitely need to be on "The List"! The Fuzzy Duck was near the old 24 Hour Kroger where I used to buy that generic beer. $1.03 a six pack in the yellow cans that just said "BEER" on the side. Ahhhhh, the memories (If I could remember!).

Did anyone mention the Frosty Mug? I think it was on 23rd Street. We used to enjoy Mr. P's at Northgate too.

What about Senor Frog at Eastgate? Never a dull moment.

There used to be a small club on Lee Hwy in the very early 90's. It was a small white building, but I can't remember the name of it. We used to go see the band "Adrenalin" there. Anybody remember them?

I'm afraid "The Messiah" fell on hard times, lost that house, wife, and Porsche.

Had a correct replica Thompson submachine gun hanging over the bar. I don't remember the owner's name, but I had season tickets at Neyland above his, and we showered him with beer every Saturday. Vincent P was okay, but the bar was frequented by the typical big-mortgaged, bad attituded crowd Hixson attracted, the kind you find downtown now.

I wouldn't know about that. The P's were family friends so I have a fond memories of the place. The German potato salad was my favorite.
In my party days I preferred Atlanta or Nashville for the weekend. Otherwise, it was Yesterday's or BR. Where do you find that attituded crowd now?

Mostly Taco Mac, hardly any at Hair of the Dog, except on Fridays, when the amateur club comes out weekends. A lot of fights folks start but won't finish. They won't put up with it at CBC or Big River.
You're right, that potato salad was fine.

Fred Pomagrin (Spelling?) I think his waitress was named "Jan". He was big into hockey and had formed several teams back when they had a rink at the Choo Choo.

All I remember was that it was on the left if you were driving away from Brainard. Sorry to hear about Adrenalin. I used to have one of their tapes. I thought they might make it big time one day.

The Nucleus - not really a bar, but a lot of drinking in the parking lot and from a paper bag.

Yeah, that was always a nice cover story - the marks always fall for the "boo-hoo" poor little college girl in a g-string scam.
Did you ever really talk to any of them? We're not talking high end ACT or SAT scoring Rocket Scientists here, more like 4H trailer park inbreeding experiments gone horribly awry...

Damn, the Rednecks vs. the Punks on Cherokee Blvd... that's been a long time. I don't give a rat's ass about Scott, but is Whiskey (the Basset Hound) still alive?

I don't know where you got the paper bag from, but hell I don't remember where we got the beer from. All I know is the Red Hot Chili Peppers show sucked. Black Flag was a lot more fun...
