Currently reading Eric Flint's 1632. I'm about 3/4ths of the way through it and will probably finish it tonight.
Up next will be John Ringo's Into the Looking Glass.

1632 is ok. Kinda funny, but not hysterical.

Yeah, the culture clashes make for pretty amusing scenarios.

Try Rebooting Yourself: A Dilbert Collection by Scott Adams It's funny until you realize it's all too true. My favorite so far: When asked if he ever wonders about his purpose in life, Wally answered, "My purpose is to transport huge quantities of coffee from the coffee maker to a urinal."

"At Risk" by Patricia Cornwell. It's not a Kay Scarpetta novel, but it is a murder mystery set in Knoxville...

Fresh Disaster by Stuart Woods. A Stone Barrington Novel. Not the best Barrington book but about 4 stars.

Across the Great Divide: Nixon, Clinton and the War of the Sixties by Wayne Karol available for about $5 on Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 at: www.diesel-ebooks.com/cgi-bin/item/0595777686/Across-the-Great-Divide-eBook.htmlI've put a lot of distance between myself and many high school classmates, but occasionally like to Google them just for fun. That's how I learned that Wayne had written a book. Wayne's sister was a close friend for a long time until the relationship just got too dysfunctional. She and her brother were (and still are) ardent liberals, and as the saying goes, the personal became political. To look at Wayne (at least as he was 20-some years ago), you'd never guess at how lucid, intelligent and witty his writing could be. I am surprised by many things here, not the least of which is his ability to objectively examine both sides of American political ideology. I have enjoyed this book and am glad the author is doing well. As he reveals briefly in the pages, the odds were against it happening.

I picked up a couple of the short story sequels over the weekend at a discount book warehouse for about $2 each in hardcover. Haven't read them yet, but I'll get around to them eventually. Among the other purchases made this weekend, I've already finished "Dungeons and Dreamers", a book about the origins of computer role playing gaming, starting with the mainframe Adventure games and MUDS up to EverQuest, but mainly following Lord British (Richard Garriot) from Akalabeth (not to be confused with Tolkien's Akallabeth) all the way to Ultima IX and Ultima Online. Also, I am almost finished with "Microchip", a book about the evolution of microchips, from the first chips with more than one transistor, through MSI and LSI and on to CPU's from the Intel 4004 through the Pentium 4. I'm about 2/3 through, and it is moving on from CPU's to cell phone chips. I say its about chips, but more so it is about the people who invented them. Quite fascinating (for a geek like myself), although many of the reviews at Amazon pan it harshly. It is worth the $2 I paid for it, though.

I'm about to start reading Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" for my book group. I haven't read sci-fi in a long time, and I'm looking forward to it. Anybody else read this trilogy?

A large number of us have. One thing you'll have to remember, it was originally written as a series of short stories for magazine publication in the 1940's, later knitted together in book form. As such, at times you will find it dated and disjointed. Plus Asimov was more noted for the worlds he created than the people he populated them with, so expect character development to be a bit flat. That said, this remains one of my favorite series by one of my favorite authors. The stories are engaging, and the universe he created is fascinating.

I just read "Scar Tissue," Anthony Kiedis's biography written by him and Larry Slovak. It was good if you enjoy that sort of a read.

I was also reading "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. It was a book that was on Oprah's book club list. I really thought this was a good book, one that was really hard to put down and kept your interest until the end. I'm still reading "Lisey's Story" since I got sidetracked by the other book.

Just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy. McCarthy uses the language with such skill he can write this book about a post-apocalyptic world dominated by cannibals and make me like it.

Finshed HP & TDH last night. Very interesting. My DH finished it Saturday night. We discussed different parts and the literary devices employed by the author.

For pleasure reading, I've just started, "The Reality Dysfunction" by Peter F. Hamilton. When searching for new sci-fi authors to read I usually will pick up some anthologies. Came across a short story by PFH and loved it so, did some research on the web and found out that this series has made a big splash in the sci-fi world. Very good so far! This is a space opera, universe/world creating set of books originally published as a trilogy in the UK but broken into six books in the US. He has another trilogy (again published as six books in the US) dealing with (I believe) the same universe, but different period. It's been along time since I've come across an author that I'm looking very forward to losing myself in some reading for a change!
For more intellectual stimulation I'm currently making my way through "Lost Christianities". Although all too many 'Christians' today are willingly ignorant of the earliest days of Christianity (you mean Christ wasn't always deemed a God or divine? His mother wasn't always believed to have been a virgin? The trinity hasn't always been a part of Christianity?! Sunday is not the sabbath?!?!) there is finally coming forward (i.e. being readily available) a body of information dealing with the competing Christian communities that existed during the first two and half centuries before the books of the Christian Bible were canonized and the Nicene creed was adopted. Very interesting reading.
