The store on Hwy 153 across from Northgate Mall that was once a Dunkin Donuts is now going to be reopened as....a Dunkin Donuts!
When my kids were in elementary school, our big treat after school was to get a box of their chocolate donut holes, milk for the kids and a coffee for Mom, and head to the park. They used to have awesome coffee!

I went to that Donut Connection one time. I really $13 for a dozen glazed doughnuts was a little too much. Glade to see Dunkin back.

It's all tied in with the Volkswagen deal. No lebkucken donuts, no passat.

Its about freaking time. I mean what kind of city doesn't have a freaking Dunkin D's When it opens prepare to be underwhelmed. Dunkin Donuts is not what you remember. DDs in other cities aren't doing well. Strike 1: They all seem to be pretty unhygienic, unhealthy, disgusting. Strike 2: Rachel Ray as a spokesperson. Who incidently wore a keffiyeh (symbol of palistine) in a commercial. Did she pick the garmet, or was it chosen by the stylist for the commercial? Who knows, who cares. Strike 3: Mostly foreign owned franchises. No outsourced donuts for me.

And yes it's a hard place to keep clean because of all the various sugars, jellies, cremes etc. The franchise owners I worked for milked the place dry. I expect the same from this next owner.

$13? That's more expensive than donuts up here! And everything's expensive here.

Excuse me, but that's what I was charged. Maybe there is more than one reason they are no longer in business.

Well I must say the issue of cleanliness had slipped my mind a bit. I remember the one on Brainerd Rd and towards the end of its life it had turned to hell. Something else that makes me leery of a franchise brand like that is the employees. God only knows what going into the dough. Recently a group of guys were talking about moon pies and how you would be a fool to eat a moon pie. OK the curiosity got me so I had to ask. Basically there is a lack of supervision at Chattanooga Bakery. Spit, boogers, and scraps that had fallen in the floor would be collected and thrown in the mix. I officially had my last moon pie. I guess the same concern could be focused here. There is something to be said about local bakeries. The quality and taste usually is far superior to chain anything.

The last time I visited the Dunkin Donuts on Hwy 153 (before it closed) I was able to smell the BO of the person working behind the counter when I walked in the door. We left without purchasing anything to my son's dismay (hey, 6 y/o boys do not have the same aversion to body odor that adults do!)
Didn't 20/20 or one of those news shows do a story about nasty conditions at fast food chains recently, and show the kitchens of several Dunkin Donuts that were filthy?
Was The Donut Connection the place in Red Bank in the old KFC? I liked that place...isn't there one in Fort O still?

As far as cleanliness, a lot of other places use similar ingredients, but aren't crap holes (Panera Bread, Starbucks, etc.)

Dunkins are pervasive here .... serve great coffee and espresso drinks as well as doughnuts and bagels.
They're clean, and yes typically foreign owned. At least here, the foreigners have much more of a service-orientation than the American owned businesses. Maybe that's just Chicago.
I will be happy if I can get my large iced latte lite in Chattanooga when I'm home for Christmas.

Patel is Indian for motel or hotel. Their last names are what they do for a living. Some Patels have become Americanized and keep their last names and go into convenience stores. When they were given the money to come to the US and start a business, they also promised to make enough money to allow a family member to come and start the same business.

what an idiot you are. " Their last names are what they do for a living. "
everything you said is an untrue stereotypical redneck racist belief.

Actually it was only slightly inaccurate. Patel does not mean "hotel" or "motel" but it is an Indian name much like Smith is in this country. Indian culture places a lot of importance on class and because of that you will find people with the same family names in similar type of work. The Patels are from the merchant class. They were the shop keepers and small business owners in India. When they immigrated here they continued to do what they knew.
They also have an interesting method of financing business startups. The community, usually family members, pools their money to finance businesses for new immigrants to this country. As the new business becomes profitable a portion of those profits go back into the pool. They bypass banks by creating their own banks. No one is being paid out of this pool so all of it is capital available for new businesses.
I've worked with a lot of Indians since moving to Atlanta and I've found that most of them are very willing to talk about their culture and the differences between cultures in an objective manner. I've learned a lot from working with them about their culture and their religion. I think they are more like us than most would suspect. Of course a lot of that might stem from their time under British rule. India has the largest English speaking population in the world.

I like DD's. It's been forever since I've had some, but I'd be willing to give this new franchise a chance before writing it off for the past mistakes of other failed franchises... With that being said... the last time I went to the one on Brainerd (maybe 10 or 11 years ago), it was a late night donut run (gotta love the college years)... and there were plenty of people working and lights on and yet the door was locked. Pretty sure they were open 24 hrs back then. They came to the door and let me in and I asked why they had things locked up and they said they were just being cautious, for they had been robbed the last two consecutive nights around that same time. So I got my assortment and left quickly I attribute that to the fine neighborhood though, not the donuts. Don't blame the donuts.

If it is better than ones in other cities, I'll be a customer.

So, I am not inaccurate. Patel does not mean "hotel" or " motel" Saying that it does is an often repeated stereotype.
I also know people from the country of India.
Go Ask Billy Long about his relationship with the local Indian Business community.

Dunkin Donuts was on WGOW a year ago or more announcing they were going to open a dozen franchises here. I guess they finally found a sucker to pay the 40 grand for the franchise fee and the 6% off the top in royalties.
In Atlanta, many of the DD are in with Baskin Robbins in shared premises to make ends meet.
Krispy Kreme rules in the South. Long live KK.
Also, Ruth's Chris has withdrawn their Hamilton Place location from consideration, according to folks in the know.

I used to have in Indian guy working for me who went beyond expectations on the work. Only problem is, it was not needed or wanted, and it took him so long that nothing else got done. Great guy, though. His name was Vijay Singh, which I think means "50% of Indian men are named this".
