Greetings Yall...
My GF & I are possibly moving to Chatt.,Knoxville & Macon have an 'outside' chance though...
Was wondering about rent & job markets and if yall know of any links or anything(would be greatly appreciated!).
I haven't been to Chatt. in many moons & was always 'intrigued' by your pretty city!I live in Austin which is now a megalopolis,sadly.

You can find a good place to live for fairly cheap, but the job market is pretty rough.

Don't move to Chattanooga terrible city. Move to Cleveland or N. Ga. Chattanooga is terrible schools suck police dept is corrupt. Annexation issues services are thin and getting thinner. Chatt is a good palce to visit or be from but not to live.

if your choices are Chattanooga, Macon, & Knoxville
obviously depending on all the variables like income, education, interests, & job prospects
you'd be insane to pick Knoxville or Macon over CHattanooga,... & coming from Austin (which you labeled a megalopolis) Im guessing that Chattanooga would be up your ally
I've never been to Austin but am quite famliar w/ it from a "pop culture" aspect.
Knoxville has nothing but a huge university,.. an everything that could be cool there is overrun by fake ID's & college punks.
Macon has nothing except a 5 hour head start to the beach.
CHattanooga has a tame but very respectable University, and is loaded w/ tourist-y things that can appeal to most everybody whether you're a tourist or not
pros:
professional baseball
college athletics
"puesdo-hip" downtown nightlife
several parks & riverfront
local music hall
non-profits galore
great weather and "outdoorsy stuff"
your "blueprint" mid-major market
cons
"old" money people & organization everywhere
police dept. seems to have some issues (see: Billy Long)
non-profits galore
relatively heavy (but somewhat average) city deficit
bible belting "red"
the rich get richer - the average slip but can generally hold on - the poor get poorer
Chattanooga is a small city but a very big town

My "job qualifications'?Handyman,drummer,courier,slacker et al...
my GF is a RN & has good prospects 'here'.
Prob. want to buy some property eventually,am looking for an outlying 'town'/satellite town not too far(which to me means 20 miles or less,I commute 32 a day now which is too much).
I wasn't sure about Knoxville,I like Macon but it's kinda 'sleepy'(rolls up too early at night).
Bryan,that's funny :pro & con>"non-profits galore", Austin has a zillion.
Bible belt red scares me somewhat as I'm kind of a hippie/bohemian open-minded monkey(I get along with pretty much everybody except 'fans' of Glenn Beck/right-wing nuts!)
I love the natural setting of Chatt.,lots of green & semi-mountainous(?!).Austin is pretty too but has too many cedar trees(juniper) & too many Yuppies(yuck!),not to mention way too expensive except for food costs.

RN's are needed everywhere! Chattanooga has several excellent hospitals (Erlanger, Memorial, Parkridge), retirement centers (Alexian Village) and private care groups.
Even self proclaimed "Slackers" always seem to find a way to slide by. (My husband has been doing warehouse work and light manufacturing for almost 20 years.) If you're a 'go getter' type, it's actually rather easy to start your own business... as long as it's not a restaurant or consignment shop, we got way to many of those that start and fail.

Aww come on us right wing nuts aren't so bad. Don't worry about it, there are plenty of liberal artsy types here too. Also, the Hair of the Dog pub used to have Thursday nights called "drinking liberally" where I guess everybody drank beer and talked about how much they hate us evil conservatives.

I just heard from a very good source (elected)
VW is DOUBLING the size of the plant with the announcement coming soon of a SECOND plant on the west side of Hickory Valley Road.
possible 5k in job numbers when all is said and done.

PS: where is a good mom & pop motel in Chatt.?We're coming there in early Nov.,staying a ta cottage for 2 nites & then poss. a chain motel if we can't find a Mom & Pop one(with Breakfast preferably!).
All the brochures/web sites only show the friggin chain motels.

Don't know how the rooms are, but if you want a good breakfast (or lunch, or dinner) stay at one of the two area hotels that have a "City Cafe" restaurant attached.

We aren't the most exciting city but we're getting better, Macon is at least five years behind Chattanooga.

Like I said "Border Wall" between bradley and hamilton. I obviously think that Chattanooga is super-peachy. If it is not here, it's within an easy driving distance. It has a little bit of everything. The tax rate here is a little high for the services we get in return, but such is life. |

Holy cow, you cops know all the good spots! I'm too skeered to ever stay at a "Best Western" but I did stay at the Read House and ate there. It had really good food, and a lot of it for cheap. The cakes and pies were insanely large. |
