Anyone own one? Is it a DX or the small one? How well does a pdf work? Pros or cons?
I can read the Amazon site, but would like some input from some people I know.

You cannot read comics on the Kindle 2. The graphics include the words that cannot be enlarged beyond just making the pic bigger. I wish I had DX. It is a great source for getting instant updates on interests through the blogs. If you are really interested in a subject pay the 99 cents to 1.99 for a monthly subscription. If you can take your time, you can get favorite type shortcuts to the blogs and browse for free. I like getting free samples of all books they offer. The magazines you can subscribe and newspaper tend to not include graphics and the mags are not that plentiful. Mostly just the ones that are cheap anyway. I wish the local paper or Chattanoogan fed the Kindle. Pros include being able to search for words or phrases in text (I won a book trivia contest this way) and text to robot speech. They are fragile. I had to send 1 back. Get the warrant that is said to not include rebuilt ones or that may be extended. Cons are if you stop having one you will not have the books.

I ad one of these, but it made me so frustrated, I decided to torch the sucker. Wanting a significant conflagaration, I put some gasoline on the left side, and some lighter fluid on the right. I was just about to light it up, when a wise old man ran up to me. yelling : "STOP!!! Don't you know you can not live your life burning your kindle at both ends?!?"

Have you seen the graphics on a DX? My understanding is that with the rotating screen, you can view your pdf as a full-sized document. Is that true?
I have pdf to text converting software, but it seems to destroy the formatting, such as paragraphs, and makes it difficult to read. So, reading directly from the pdf would worth the extra money.
Oh, and just how fragile?

More fragile than a laptop. 1-2 drops should do it. I haven't seen DX. The Kindle 2 makes the graphics on graphic novels too small to read. The pics work well but not the writing. I think the DX would be the choice for graphics or newspaper reading. If you wait, you will probably get one that has the ability to write comments and many are coming out with touch screens. There are several Kindle blogs that analyze and critique the competitors such as Sony, European sand Barnes and Noble units. I believe that Kindle will release another model before Christmas.

OK, thanks for the input.
I was able to try out a Sony unit when I was in Anchorage yesterday. For simply reading books, it would have been quite sufficient, but they couldn't answer about the pdf files either. So, I guess I'll try the DX in person and if I don't like it, sent it back.

I think the Kindle does not read pdf but there are files you can download from users that make it possible. CNN is reviewing the Nook reader from Barnes and Noble also featured at the Gizmodo blog. They say that it "lacks a web browser "because those are clumsy" on eReaders, Lynch says. It includes support for the ePub eBook format, FictionWise and PDF, as well as RSS feeds from the internet". I find the lack of browser excuse dubious.

I think the B&N Nook might have the Kindle beat. blogs.zdnet.com/mobile-gadgeteer/?p=2101I'd like to know if ebooks available only through Amazon can be read on the Nook. I'd also like to know if ebooks only available through B&N could be read on the Kindle.

I'm still trying to find out if the pdf files will flow or if they will be scrunched down.

Depends on the PDF. The PDF must have the reflow setting enabled when it is created to support that. I've ran into that with PDF's on my PocketPC (Dell Axim X51) that I use as an eBook reader.
