We had some hilarity last night -- my husband despises kidney beans in chili. I asked his sister if she could make a beanless batch; she thought that was bizarre and said she'd never heard of chili without beans. My mom always made it with beans, but husbands #1 and #2 have both preferred it without. Husband #1 even said "real" chili conoisseurs considered beans some sort of heresy. Whatever. I go with the flow as usual, so I haven't had beany chili in over 25 years.
Until last night. We had 7 people at the table, and my husband had to fight over the small pot of beanless chili with two 3rd-graders ("Beans? EWWWWWW!"). My sister-in-law was quite surprised.
So? What's your opinion on the chili question?

My preference is for beanless chili with pieces of meat rather than ground beef. However, beans do not make chili inedible to me either.

The grocery stores carry cans of chili with or without beans.

I prefer chili with no more than two hundred and thirty nine beans in it. If you add one more bean than that it becomes too farty.

Mix of Pinto & Chili Beans if I'm eating a bowl of chili. Beanless chili on a hot dog.

The grocery stores carry cans of chili with or without beans. Yes, they do, and it can be quite an adventure finding that one can of no-bean Hormel mixed in with its beany brethren. The labeling is virtually identical.

I believe that "real" chili is supposed to be beanless---and use beef chunks rather than groundbeef. However, some people actually add chocolate to their chili, so I guess it really is a matter of taste.

True chili has neither beans nor meat of any kind. It is just a sauce made from chili peppers. But that means little, as it is kind of like a mother sauce in French cooking. You can add beans, beef, pork, chicken, whatever, and it will probably be good.
As for the chocolate, I haven't seen that, but cocoa powder is very good if you don't go overboard. It adds richness, but too much becomes bitter.
I do not consider "white chili" to be chili at all, as it does not start with chili peppers.

I have never had chili (in a bowl, as a meal) without beans except for on a hot dog. I do not like Pintos in my chili, it has to be kidney beans.

Doesn't matter to me if it's in a bowl with crackers. On a hot dog it must be bean-less "chili sauce" and as thick as mothers sarcasm.
As far as meat,I prefer chuck,or turkey.

The chili I make and have always made, as well as my grandmother before me, is made with Bush's Chili Hot beans. No kidney beans and no bell peppers either.
