Hello my name is Ira and my fiancé is Devere. We just went to this Salvadoran restaurant at 207 E. Main St. (near the fire station) called Taco Rico and it was delicious! We are the adventurous type, always looking for something authentic. We hit the jackpot finding this place! The appearance on the outside leaves a lot to be desired, (they are working on the front) the inside was clean, but felt well used. The couple who owns the place are Rene and Angelica. The husband Rene was the only one we met on this trip, because Angelica was busy in the back cooking our food. I say our food because we were the only ones in the place (that had me concerned) the only other person was their young daughter asleep in one of the booths. Rene was polite and helpful. He talked at length about his home town in El Salvador (after I had inquired about the food and culture). He took our drink order (we both had cokes) and when he returned he brought what looked like the older type of large glass coke bottles. It turned out they are from Mexico and the taste was surprisingly better (we rarely drink coke) after we had ordered our drinks I discovered they sold beer (Rene offered to take the cokes back, but I was enjoying one for a change). Apparently they have a really good Salvadoran beer, which we will order next time. The menu is limited but I have no doubt will grow as they grow. We ordered pastelitos, Salvadorian chicken tamale, chorizo taco, shrimp taco and pupusas. Before our meal arrived Rene brought out a basket of dried banana chips and three types of sauces. The chips were not sweet like you might expect but mimicked small tortilla chips. When out food arrived, I dove right into a tamale wrapped in a plantain leaf. It was heavenly, like biting into a fluffy cloud filled with potatoes and small bits of chicken. One of the best tamales I have ever eaten and believe me I have tried my share over the years. The pastelitos were exceptional, filled with beef and potatoes, along with a small bowl of slaw in a special red sauce. My fiancé loved her pupusas and said her shrimp taco was superb. The three sauces were perfect condiments for the meal. Rene says that if we call ahead next time his wife will prepare a special meal (it takes about 30 or 40 minutes) that will reflect a traditional supper in their home land. You better believe we will take him up on this generous offer and will not miss out on the Salvadorian beer next time! Take the time to go out of your way and visit this restaurant, you will be glad you did.

this joint has, for lack of a better term, invested with a couple of friends of mine.
very authentic. lots of work to get the place where it needs to be as the entire front of the building is being remodeled and if the funds hold up should be a nice looking building from the street.
real sugar coke longnecks & a nice (but still small) beer selection w/ $1 domestics & $1 tacos on mondays & thursdays (last I was told)
not crapy beef tacos either. much more authentic food than you usually see.
very good value. I hope it can survive,...
I'll give it most of the year,.. well until at least a couple of seasons. which mean just more that 6 months.
Hope I'm wrong

They've been there several years already. New owners...couple of months. Papusas are really good, red sauce better than green. I like hot salsa and the green was even a lot for me.

I "reviewed" this place a while back...I agree this is a wonderful gem of a restaurant. I try to eat there at least once a month.

Ira, thanks for the review. With construction going on at the location its easy to pass by a jewel sometimes. My next trip to Chattanooga will have me trying this place out.

the front of the building with the entrance (from Main Street) is virtually done.
Lit up w/ OPEN neon sign.
gonna try and get them hooked up w/ some beer neons & P.O.S. (point of sale) advertising some time soon after the super bowl sales push.
had 4 tacos, 4 beers, & one 500ml Mexican coke for $10 and change tonight. & still saying very quality stuff on my 2nd visit there.
don't think taco shop "ameri-mex" style,... it appears to be very authentic Salvadoran
or at least as as Salvadoran as I could imagine.
in other words,... not your same 'ol same 'ol.
give it a try

Been awhile since I've eaten there, but it was always good! I remember the first time I ate there....I couldn't understand them and they couldn't understand me. Ended up having to hold up four fingers and point to a taco shell. Went inside to pay, and couldn't understand him either. Gave him a 20 and just let him figure out how much I owed This place has been there for years...FYI.
