The city has been a little more dangerous than usual these days, so we only attended parades in neighboring Jefferson Parish (which is where I grew up, anyway). These pictures are from the Argus Parade Mardi Gras day. Some of the beautiful costumes worn by the Krewe members: Some of the beautiful people in average costumes ... The drunker they get the more they throw. It's always good to be closer to the end of the route than the beginning. Some of the parade crowd clamoring for the cheap throws. The beads are practically worthless ... the thrill of the catch is priceless. Afterward some young ladies scour the streets looking for something they don't have.

*rolls eyes*
Why do none of you ever believe the locals that tell you over and over that mardi gras is a celebration the whole town gets into, and that you don't have to show jack or shit (or tit) to get beads?
All she had to do was stand there as the parade went by and hold out her hands. We ain't talkin Bourbon Street tourists.

No, she didn't. That's why we prefer the Jefferson Parish parades. Hardly any tourists. Argus is one of those really good family parades. Notice in the third picture the kids sitting in a wooden box mounted to the top of a six-foot ladder? Practically every family has one or two of these in their garage, much like Yankees keep sleds in theirs.
Edited to fix a typo

Yeah, I usually go to the Jeff Parish parades.
Except Thoth and Baccus.

Common misconceptions. Even tourists may have those stories. You just have to go to the "real" Mardi Gras to find out. I'll post a coupla more pictures that may explain it better. Behind the lines of people at the street, you usually have tables and chairs and folks "tailgating" with plenty of food and munchies and beverage (both types), kids running around playing with the "throws" and generally a GREAT TIME. World's Biggest Block Party.

Sorry Marvel, I just get so sick of the assumptions about that. I hear it Every Year. I come home with bags of beads and Every Year there's a buncha jerks that absolutely insist the only possible way to get 'em is to bare breasts. I get the constant urge to beat rubes into the pavement over the accusations (and yes, they downright accuse) based on pure ignorance.
As Shooter described, Mardi Gras is the worlds biggest block party. The same people go to the same stretch of parade route every year with the entire family. Some groups even bring out couches and set 'em up in the median strip the night before.
Sure, there's the "girls gone wild" bit on a few blocks of Bourbon, but that's really discouraged anywhere else in the city.

I know better. I would hate to think that those young girls had to "show" anything for their beads. My thinking is being much reinforced as I watch my granddaughter become ever cuter each year, (each day, actually ) and try to imagine what she will face as a no doubt very attractive teenager. Yes, I am going to be a curmudgeon of a grandfather as she reaches puberty, at least as regards young studs sniffing around.

Hey, WarKitty, have you forgotten what we call those things down there?
That's no median, it's a Neutral Ground!
Of course, I know you were just trying to use terminology non-yats would understand ;D
