Tubby's is the best burger in town....to those rich folk who live on the mountain that are too afraid to stop at J&C quick stop on 4th and 34th.

The best is always debatable I suppose. They all have their points that we love about each. In saying that here are a couple great spots for a "real" (not frozen bullshit) burger.
(5) Armando's: The king, will always remain something special in all our hearts; however the flame begins to flicker with the new competition in town. The original BIG ASS BURGER!
(4) Nikki's Diner: A throw back to the good ole days of hamburgers. A true diner burger and atmosphere. If you wanted to know what your parents and grandparents ate....it's Nikki's style burger all the way...
(3) Taco Mac: A juicy 8oz, Angus, Char-grilled burger makes this burger top notch. Try The Elmwood....
(2)Kevin Brown Burger: Who? A little hole in the wall in the Ooltewah area that pleases everyone. If you dont feel up to the drive, slide on in to Five Guys because in my opinion they are rated, tastes and made about the same. I listed Kevin Brown because they are local and they should get the exposure Vs. a big chain
(1) Terminal Brew House: This place sets the new standard in Chattanooga for a quality and freshness. TBH is a spectacular local place that has the menu to go with it. In addition to their laundry list of items the burgers set themselves apart from the rest. Yes, the quality of meat is an important factor, but what animal? or what plant even? is even better determination when making your burger selection. You can choose from Beef, Bison, or house made veggie burger patty (impressive) Top that off with your regular toppings of mustard, mayo, onions, tomato or add some premium toppings like Brie or Gouda, Applewood Bacon, or sautéed button mushrooms to make this a one of a kind burger. They also have a nice selection of cheeses: Cheddar, Swiss, American, Bleu Cheese, Provolone, and Pepper Jack. If thats not enough try your burger blackened or with jerk seasoning. The 1/2 pd burgers are served on Niedlov's Kaiser roll that is simply amazing. Everything about this burger is perfectly crafted and it a true gem in Chattanooga. It's not the best I ever had,but ranks pretty damn close.
Honorable Mention: King's Delight: Another spot located in the heart of East Chattanooga. From the appearance outside one might be afraid to approach, but don't let that rough exterior in a bad neighborhood fool you the place has been around since the 1950's (so you know that have been doing something right.) The burgers are a double fister and remind me of how grandma used to make them and that's what keeps me coming back. This place defines "hole in the wall" and they say those are the best places
NOT MENTIONED:
Chee Burger Chee Burger: Two reasons (1) touristy priced (2) a greasy nightmare mess. When the joint first opened it was catchy and the food was good. It seems over time the place has turned into a cardiologist's dream. Yup, I know we are talking about burgers here, but there is a way to be greasy and good and then there is greasy with diarrhea.
Tubby's: Since I feel like I'm jacking the thread I have to at least put my spin on Tubby's here. There are two types of Tubby diners. The ones that love Tubby's and theres the ones that like Tubby's but have found a better burger elsewhere.

A decent burger, but far from the best in town IMO. Disappointing. They have several burgers on the menu. 1. Some sort of shitty hamburger. Skip that one. 2. "Tubby's Real Burger" (as opposed to the other "fake" burgers they have on the menu. Skip all the other burger variations they have there. Order the "Real Burger" there and you will not be disappointed. Easily the best around. Second best burger is 6 Feet Under in Atlanta. Then maybe the Vortex, also in Atlanta. Skip the Varsity if you are ever in search of a good hamburger. Their entire menu is awful. I've traveled far and wide and Tubby's has the best hamburger, but you have to know which one to order.

I like Five Guys on Hixson Pike just north of Northgate - a lot. Besides yummy burgers and more fries than I can shake a stick at, the people there are a hoot - friendly and happy. It's a pleasure to go there. Smiles are important to me. They are great if you like a lot of grease.

I'll second that the old location had better burgers, and yes, all I will order there is the Real Burger. I've not tried the Terminal Brewhouse burger because I have an aversion to new and trendy places, especially ones that look to be high priced (and they may not be, but driving by I get that impression). I much prefer the hole in the wall places. Armando's really depends on which you go to, they are not all the same. I loved the one in Middle Valley, don't care for the one on Hwy 58. Mervs, the last time I went, was disappointing. Years ago, Paddy's Pub and Grub had a great burger, but no more. Last time I was there I was very disappointed by the pre-made frozen patty.
I'm of the opinion that I make the best burgers I've ever eaten, but I can't open a restaurant. Who'd eat at a place called "Worm Burgers"?

I am utterly shocked that you would put Tubby's ahead of The Vortex. I mean wow! If we wanna talk best burger ever. It's either Vortex in ATL or Litton's in Knoxville (Peyton Manning's favorite place). To be honest I lean a bit more towards Litton's....Pretty damn amazing, but expensive
Worm, Terminal Brewhouse is not what you would expect. It's a microbrew joint, not like Big River (which I think is shit). Terminal is pretty laid back and I would venture to say that it is a little more Hippy, but caters to all. The prices are moderate for the area and for the quality. Give it a shot, dont think you will be disappointed

Merv's number 1, with Zarzour's a close second. North Chatt Cat is good, as is Mike's Hole In The Wall on Cherokee Blvd.

To be honest I lean a bit more towards Litton's....Pretty damn amazing, but expensive I always favor the hometown team. Our tastes in resturants are pretty similar based on food topics on the forum. I haven't been to Litton's in Knoxville. I always seem to favor diner type places. Tubby's verses The Vortex. A diner type places verses a trendy gothic hippy sort of place... Have you tried Zesto's in Atlanta? It is like going back in a time machine. The food is really good too. I was not impressed with Harold's BBQ in Atlanta, even though the Food Network featured it as one of the best in the nation. There are certain places that just say "home" to me, Tubbys, Armandos, and a few others. Henen's downtown is really good. The Acropolis.

Tubby's burgers are no where near what they used to be at the old location because a really wonderful man owned and ran the place then. New owners in the new building......NOT the same,

Leonards was the best. Merv's now. Zarzour's. North Chatt Cat, Mikes Hole In The Wall. Zesto's in Atlanta is good. Bud's gets honorable mention. Mervs wins.

Vortex is very good.
Five Guys = garbage
Terminal is my fav. new local joint. Beer's not great but the atmosphere & food make up for the average brew.

Can't get over how many Armandos fans are here!
Sure, they have a good burger...but it's far from something to write home about. Much like Tubbys, it was pretty damn good several years ago.
I guess I just prefer the hole in the wall places when the owner will be the one taking your order, cooking it, and ringing you up.
When I worked on Cherokee Blvd, that place was North River Corner Market. When I worked on Rossville Blvd, that was J&C's. Now living here in N. GA, those places are the Burger Den in Rocky Face and Chow Time in Ringgold.
Oh, and who ever it was that said The Varsity was bad is crazy! The two months I was in rehab after my wreck, I lived off of that place alongside the staff at Health South. That place is just guud!

My dear BS, while I have never eaten at The Vortex as there is such a huge variety of ethnic foods available in Atlanta that are not available in Chattanooga I feel dining on any burger there is a waste of stomach room, I have to say that 5 Guys is at least a few steps above garbage.
As for the Terminal, they have been open for over a year hardly a new place. The burgers are indeed good, however I must question your statement that the beer is not great. First of all they blow Big River completely away, admittedly not a difficult feat. IMHO the India Brown Ale they have right now is one of the best examples of this style I have tasted. The Magnum IPA is also a very good quaff. I have had issues with one or two of their offerings but find that the brewers are very open to constructive criticism from someone who can speak knowlegably.

the beer [terminal's] is better than big river's?
well yeah. who didn't already know that. I said it was average. not garbage
5 Guys is garbage. it's a fast food burger.
and 1 year open is pretty new for around these parts. I give it way more than 6 more months

What he said. ^^^ Tubby's was much better before it moved. And it depends upon which Armandos you eat at how good the burger is. None of them are as good as they were when they were originally on Main Street. Merv's and Zarzour's rock. Marsha's are pretty good too.
Litton's hamburgers are good, but their steaks are much better, as well as the red velvet cake.

How long do you give Zarzour's, Bryan? They have been open under the same family for 91 years.

Tried one of Terminal Brewhouse's burgers tonight. Wasn't bad, but at $8.50 (after upgrades) I felt like there should have been more to it. May be because the ones I make myself are more like 2/3 lb than 1/2 lb. I know I was still hungry, anyway. Overall, I liked the Mailbock beer better than the burger.
Not sure what all the hate is for Five Guys. Yes, they are a fast food burger. They don't pretend to be anything but. Yes, they are greasy. But they blow anything from any other fast food joint out of the water. I just wish I could get the ideas Hardees has had lately for burgers actually carried out by Five Guys. A really good, big, cheap, fast mushroom swiss burger would hit the spot. Or a Frisco with meat that didn't remind me of scrub sponges.

when I want a burger it is usually to Merv's that I go.. and when it is good fries i go to five guys, but five guys burgers are still far beyond just a fast food food burger. I try not touching fast food burgers unless I have too.
