Have any of y'all been to a tasting at Moccasin Bend Brewing Company?
I've gone quite a few times. It really is a lot of fun. They are a Nano brewery that also offers onsite "u-brew" home brewing. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday they have tours and for a small fee you can have a tasting.
A few things:
The building is just down the street from Historic downtown St. Elmo and is in the basement of a building built in the early 1920's. It is pretty cool in there with all the exposed stonework walls and solid oak beams and rafters. You really get a feel like you could be in some old pub in Ireland. Also, they play tunes on a good old fashioned record player. I like the ambiance. If you are looking for slick corporate feel go to chili's. If you liked the old Stone Lion pub or the Pickle Barrel you will like this.
The beers are an odd assortment of Ales, Stouts, and Porters. I can't say that I recommend all the beers available for tasting but I can specifically really recommend three of the beers: Juniper Pale Ale, The ESB and The Chocolate stout. I am not a huge stout fan but the Chocolate Stout is an exceptional brew and probably the best overall offering they have. Make sure to get the Nitrogen pour on this one and you will not be disappointed. My favorite beer offered is the Juniper Pale Ale. I really like how the Juniper berries he adds during the hoping process give this a nice crisp taste while retaining some good ole Pale Ale bite. Lastly, the ESB is really well done. It is a really good balance of malt and bitter and despite being a "bitter" is extremely drinkable.
Lastly, some of the nicest folks work there and Chris the proprieter is open and more than willing to explain the brewing process and what he is trying to accomplish. I support what he does because he is bringing something valuable to the beer culture in Chattanooga. It is a place where you can go with no knowledge and take an afternoon and brew your own top notch beer. They will even can it for you. If you think supporting local is worthwhile then you need to get out to the MBBC.
