does anybody here have any experience with any of the e-book readers? I've been looking at the new Kindle, but I'm not sure if it is the best route to go. an I-pad is another option, but more expensive than an e-reader.

Well, you could try this and not be out more than a C-note after tax and shipping. Personally, I use an old Dell Axim X-51 with MobiPocket. But I don't buy books, I tend to get mine from free sites like Baen's free book library and Project Gutenberg.

I use an ipod touch with the stanza app. I NEVER buy paper books anymore. (several years now) Get with me before you buy any books, there are thousands available public domain.
the smaller size means you have to turn the page more often but it also means it fits in your shirt pocket which means you can pull your book out and read during a traffic jam, or long line at checkout...
I have two, bet we can work out a trade..

I have a nook and am very happy with it. It has one thing that the kindle and many others do not it has a place for a micoSD card so you can expand the memory. Many others do not have this.

sure you can. an e-reader in a zip-bag is easier to turn the pages than a paperback.

Get the Kindle--the new one, at $149.
I got it and I'm thrilled with it. I chose it over the Nook for several reasons: after comparing the two, I found the Kindle to be lighter weight, have faster page turns, and a better screen. I can read it for hours and hours, without eyestrain--it's no different than paper. I use Calibre to convert files when I need to. The battery life is fantastic--it needs a charge only every couple weeks.

one of the things I want to be able to do is to read PDF or WORD documents on it. I have several training manuals/notes & sections of law that I would like to have access to with the reader. an SD slot & hardwire connection would be great also.
not to mention the hardcopy manuals that I have that I would like to scan into the computer and access with the reader.

Wonder if the third party reader I use (stanza on an ipod) sends data back.

WK, you do know that owning an e-reader does not preclude you from taking a paperback to the tub. Right?

Sure, but then I'd have to buy it twice. Once hard copy, once digital... and that's just silly.

As much as you read I would think that having some books in e-format and others in dead tree format wouldn't be unreasonable.
I don't own an e-reader other than the apps I have on my netbook and phone. I've been looking and want one, though. I think I prefer the Nook from what research I've done so far.

Can't give an e-book to random strangers on an airplane. I HAVE given hard copy books to random strangers on an airplane.

OSRB, thanks.
WK, yeah, there is that. I've left quite a few books with fellow travelers and flight attendants after finishing them on a plane. I've also left them laying in coffee shops and fast food places. With the Nook, however, you can loan the ebook to other Nook users.
Personally, I see me eventually getting one and using it for most of my reading. I don't see me giving up dead tree format all together, though. When I do it will have a screen similar or just like the Kindle or Nook. After looking at both of those I know I could read from those screens just as long as I can read from paper. I think after about forty-five minutes with the iPad I would have to give it a rest. That is the current case with both my netbook and my Blackberry.

I have a Kindle DX specifically because I have hundreds of books in PDF format, many of them with pictures. It's larger than the other readers, but then again, it's much smaller than "The Story of Civilization" and "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" and "The Harvard Classics".
If the PDF file can be reflowed so you can adjust the text size, I wouldn't want the DX because of its size, and if it can't be reflowed, then it's too small on the smaller e-readers. Also, I read several publications that come in columns, and although the smaller e-readers will magnify the entire document, it's irritating to have to constantly scroll back and forth and up and down.
So, with lots of PDF documents, I think it's worth the larger size.
There are many books available for free (public domain) and many others that are only a dollar or two that would cost several dollars in book format. Thomas Sowell gave away his last book online, and you can preview other current books before you buy them. (Usually the first chapter is free.)
Oh, and WK, I still read plenty of dead trees as well. One does not preclude the other. But I am more likely to carry my Kindle for traveling, since it's smaller than carrying two or three books.
ETA: There is a clear, waterproof, zipper case made for the DX by a third party company. Maybe for the regular Kindle as well, but I'm not sure about that.

WK... I'm fighting the same mental battle that you are, and apparently Justin previously.
I think I'm slipping over, to the point that I was looking forward to getting one for Christmas. (I got a new flannel shirt instead.)
btw... How the he11 are ya?
this appears to be my bi-annual run and "getting back in touch".

heh... I've moved to the "blue" side. Still involve but now I enforce/interpret the rules instead of trying to break 'em.
I was rewarded with the opportunity to work the Men's "B" National in Dallas Texas this past labor day Weekend. I received a perfect score on my evaluation afterward.

My wife got the Kindle for Christmas....she LOVES it. It even has text to speech that will read to you. Sounds like a robot, though.

Maybe you should get her one for Mother's Day and just play with it yourself until then.
