A quartet comprised of some of America's most talented young musicians, Bua plays Irish traditional music with "a precision and intensity that is rarely heard on this side of the Atlantic." Their sound stands out among modern bands in the genre by "keeping the music down the path of tradition" and reminding listeners of such fondly-remembered greats as The Bothy Band and Planxty. Critics write that Bua's 2009 release, An Spealadóir, "features all that is really good about traditional music." It is no surprise that Bua, taking their name from the Irish Gaelic word for victory, have quickly risen to be one of America's premier traditional Irish music ensembles. Bua -- (the BIG show) -- Honest Pint -- Sunday, Feb 20 -- 7pm Come see one of Chattanooga's newest bar/restaurant venues! The food is fantastic, service is friendly, plenty of beer, and a great atmosphere for live traditional Irish music. The Honest Pint - 35 Patten Parkway (where Parkway Billiards used to be) $5 cover for this show. Age 21 and up only. This concert will follow the regular weekly Irish music session featuring our local Irish band, Pay the Reckoning, at the Honest Pint, starting at 3pm. Bua -- (the mini show) -- Greenlife Grocery -- Monday, Feb 21 -- 12noon If you are unable to make it to Bua's performance at the Honest Pint on Sunday night, (or if you see them on Sunday and are still hungry for more great music-- chances are good) you get a second chance to see a short performance from Bua before they leave town. is a reminder about our special Irish musician guests who are coming to perform on Sunday at the Honest Pint (7pm) and then again on Monday at Greenlife (noon).
The $5 cover charge at the Honest Pint supports the Folk School and helps us organize performances by great bands like this. Thanks in advance for your support!
A quartet comprised of some of America's most talented young musicians, Bua plays Irish traditional music with "a precision and intensity that is rarely heard on this side of the Atlantic." Film Night at the Folk School -- War Dance -- Friday, Feb 25 -- 7pm Set in civil war-ravaged Northern Uganda, this Best Documentary Oscar nominee follows the lives of three youngsters who attend school in a refugee camp and find hope through a rich tradition of song and dance. Coming from a world in which children are abducted from their families and forced to fight in the rebel army, these kids give it their all when they travel to the capital city to take part in the prestigious Kampala Music Festival. Films at the Folk School are free events. Bring your friends, and BYOB. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rosin Sisters at Barking Legs -- Saturday, Feb 26 -- 8pm -- $10 at the door The Rosin Sisters are Barbara Panter, Jan Smith, and Ann Whitley: friends for decades in the rich roots music community of Atlanta. Each has been playing traditional country music in the Atlanta area and beyond for over 25 years, and joined together five years ago to further explore their love of singing and fiddle music, especially the rich heritage that comes out of the Appalachian and Southern regions of America. Their talents run wide to bring audiences a rich and varied program, incorporating voices, fiddles, guitars, and a banjo to highlight Barbara's interest in honky-tonk and Cajun music, Jan's interest in blues music, and Ann's interest in the music of the Carter Family era. Joining them onstage will be Barbara's husband Whit Connah, known far and wide for his soulful harmonica playing and singing, and her son John Ferguson, who will infuse his rich guitar work into their music. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Amigos 3 at the Folk School -- Sunday, Feb 27 -- 3pm -- $10 at the door National old-time banjo champion, Dan Knowles with Tim May (guitarist for Patty Loveless, John Cowan, and Charlie Daniels) and Danny Conger (fiddler for Hank Williams Jr. & Vern Gosden) will perform an afternoon concert at the Folk School of Chattanooga. Bring the family! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We've been seeing great audience support for our events and shows at Barking Legs. It feels great to be part of such a big movement of musical interest in Chattanooga, and soon the festival season will start, so it'll get even better! Thanks especially to everyone who came out to the Bua show at the Honest Pint last Sunday and at Greenlife on Monday. We made the band feel very welcome in Chattanooga, and they'll definitely be back sometime! Let's keep up the support for traditional music!! (Don't forget: Irish Traditional Session on Sundays at the Honest Pint, 3pm, and Old Time Session at the Market Street Tavern on Mondays, 7pm.) 2nd annual Stone Mountain Bluegrass and Old Time Band Competition.
We hope to see you there on Saturday March 25th at the village in Stone Mountain, Georgia. This year the venue will have much more public exposure and the crowds are expected to much larger as well.
General Rules
1- A band shall consist of at least three of the following bluegrass instruments (guitar, Mandolin, 5 string Banjo, Fiddle Bass Fiddle and Resonator Guitar). No electric instruments allowed, except the Bass fiddle may have a pickup
2- A band should prepare a minimum of three selections- One instrumental, one slow vocal song and one fast or upbeat vocal song.
3- A musician may play in more than one band provided they play a different instrument in each band.
4- Judges scoring will consider (1) 30% lead and harmony singing, (2) 30% instrumental command, (3) 30% material selection and (4) 10% stage presence.
5- Bands will use a single microphone, furnished by the festival. It will be set at the same height for all bands and will not be adjusted for individuals. Participants should prepare for this arrangement.
6-Should bands score a tie or virtual tie (within 5 points) they will be asked to perform a single “tiebreaker” song for the judges
Bands that pre-register will have their names and contact numbers (and a chance to give a one sentence about their band) printed on the Festival Program.
The Judges’ decisions are final and not subject to appeal. Please do not contact the judges to discuss their decisions since they are volunteers and should not be subjected to duress. The judges will call how they see and hear each band and though one band may be more entertaining than others they may still not score as well on the skills, thus not be judged first.

Ellijay SEBA Night March 10th Two Outstanding acts! AS CLOSE TO BEING FAMILY AS IT GETS
Barefoot Creek These girls are the closest you can get to sister harmony without being kin. Local songbirds Sarrah Ellen McDonald and Tonia Conner take a hold of a song and make it soar. From traditional unaccompanied ballads to foot-stompin’ old-time tunes, from the honky-tonk to the church house, Barefoot Creek is bound to leave you wanting more.
The Buzzard Mountain Boys are Joe Bob Matteson and Jim Bob White. These two guys play an amusing selection of Brother Duet, Bluegrass and Old-Time music, interspersed with enough corny humor to warm your heart and take you back to the days of the traveling minstrels! Both musicians are residents of Lumpkin County and are fixtures in the North Georgia traditional music community and heavily involved in the promotion of Appalachian Music.

They also draw heavily from the melodies played and sung by the earliest settlers of America who brought their music from Ireland, Scotland, and England. The Ramblers are a four-piece string band. They incorporate the use of fiddles, mandolins, guitars, banjo, and voice. Todd Gladson and Kenneth Johnson, were raised in Georgia. Over the past 10 yrs. they have captured & unleashed the essence of old time mountain music in brother duet fashion. Both shout the blues and the gospel, saw the strings & crack the jokes Both worked with Matt Kinman's Old Time Serenaders, Stone Mountain's Crossroads, and Gladson worked on the T.V. show "Outsiders Inn". The Ramblers have added Brian Volmer (Banjo/Fiddle) and Laney House (Bass/Banjo), to complete the full string band sound. Matt Evans and Christie Burns, directors Folk School of Chattanooga 423-827-8906 www.chattanoogafolk.com Folk School of Chattanooga is a program of the St. Andrew's Center, a 501(c)3 tax-exempt agency in Chattanooga.
