Bluegrass Bands Helping Hands Announce Volume 3 CD to Benefit "Miracle Field" Dalton, Georgia - March 28, 2011 Bluegrass Bands, Helping Hands organizers announce plans for a September 2011 release of their next bluegrass compilation music CD. The project will feature original acoustic roots based music with all tracks donated by the artists. The CD will be the 3rd volume of the Bluegrass Bands and Helping Hands series. Proceeds from the CD and the subsequent release party are designated to benefit The Miracle League Whitfield County (Georgia). The non-profit organization plans to build "The Miracle Field", a barrier free handicapped and wheelchair accessible baseball/softball field with a cushioned, rubberized playing surface. The ultimate goal of the organization is to establish a division of the Miracle League for children and adults from all over North Georgia and the surrounding states to participate in. "There are over 1,500 special needs students in Dalton and Whitfield County alone, with no handicap accessible field, yet we are reaching out to a much larger surrounding area to involve as many as possible" states Millie Hicks, Miracle League volunteer. " I am looking forward to being a proud fan as I see my daughter, Peyton, who has special needs, step up to the plate for the first time to take her turn as a player and team member, and not a spectator." The Miracle League Whitfield County hopes to raise $350,000 and throw the first pitch by the Spring of 2012. "Helping Hands" CD organizers Paul Byrum and T. J. Brown are anticipating that the CD release will help bring public awareness of The Miracle Field while providing a means for everyone to help improve the quality of life of children with special needs. Bluegrass and other acoustic roots musicians wishing to contribute professionally recorded compositions of original or public domain music may submit material for consideration by June 6th. Inquiries may be sent by email to bluegrassbandshelpinghands@gmail.com or Bluegrass Bands Helping Hands LLC, PO Box 6714 Dalton, Georgia 30722. For more information about The Miracle Field visit www.whitfieldcountyga.com/miracleleague/

Legendary banjo and mandolin players Alan Munde and Roland White (respectively) will be teaching at the Alabama Folk School at Camp McDowell the first week of April. Yes that is just around the corner. During this week you could also take lessons in Quilting and Basket Weaving. Oh yeah (as I bounce around the subject) you could also take lessons on Bluegrass Rhythm Guitar taught by Roland's wife Diane Bouska. So if you can make plans on this short notice you will get to spend a week in the mountains of North Alabama where our good friends at Camp McDowell will take great care of you and show you some pretty cool places in between classes. So why not combine a mountain vacation with learning something that will entertain you a life time. Herb Trotman & Jason Bailey are also on the banjo and mandolin staff (respectively). Folk School info is at www.campmcdowell.com/folkschool Munde, White, & Bouska will also be in Birmingham performing a concert on Sunday April 3rd at Moonlight on the Mountain. Of course help us to spread the word about our Memorial Day Show and if you have not ordered tickets go ahead and do so now. To reply to this email use stevemastersonemail@gmail.com

Nedski & Mojo -- Workshops and Concert this Saturday, April 9. Ned Luberecki and Stephen Mougin will be our guests at the Folk School on Saturday, April 9th. Come take one of their workshops, or join us for their evening concert. Workshops start at 3pm, Concert starts at 7pm. Seating is limited, so email us at music@chattanoogafolk.com or register online. Workshops are $50 and include admission to the concert. Concert only: $10 Banjo Workshop with Ned Luberecki - Beginner to advance players welcome. This workshop will focus on creating banjo solos starting with the melody. Instead of just stringing together familiar licks to fit a chord progression, Ned's unique approach starts with the basic melody of a tune. Then Ned shows you how to add fill-in notes and licks to create a Bluegrass style solo that's based on the melody! Other topics will include practice tips, tips for improving tone and timing and even a few banjo set up tricks. Students of all levels are welcome. Ned Luberecki plays banjo for Chris Jones and the Night Drivers and occasionally tours as second banjoist with the Tony Trischka Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular Band. Ned is also an on-air personality on "Bluegrass Junction", Sirius XM Satellite Radio's Bluegrass channel. In addition to his performing and recording career, Ned is the banjo instructor at the Nashville Music Workshop, and is also a popular teacher at music camps such as Nashcamp, Camp Bluegrass, Acoustic Music Camp, The Smoky Mountain Banjo Academy, American Banjo Camp, British Columbia Bluegrass Workshops, Midwest Banjo Camp and Banjo Camp Munich. Harmony Vocal Workshop with Stephen Mougin - All levels welcome. Based on the popular "Dark Shadow Recording - Harmony Training Series", the workshop will take traditional bluegrass songs and break down the parts for all to sing. Breathing, support, diction and other vocal techniques will be discussed throughout the duration of the class. There will be something for singers of all abilities! Beginners will discover harmony vocals while advanced singers work on vocal chops! Seminar focus will be the "feel" of singing - the concept of creating a good tone, identifying how it feels, and duplicating the feeling when you sing again. Stephen Mougin tours with the Sam Bush band as guitarist and vocalist, as well as producing and engineering records, and teaching privately. He functioned as Bush's vocal coach on the highly acclaimed "Circles Around Me" album that featured Mougin on guitar, lead/harmony vocals, and mandolin. Since moving to Nashville in 2002, he has performed with Jim Lauderdale, Melonie Cannon, Randy Kohrs, Valerie Smith and Audie Blaylock, and has played stages around the world including the Grand Old Opry. With a degree in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and experience as Choral Director at the Mahar Regional School in nearby Orange, teaching chorus, theory and general music, and producing/directing musicals, Mougin teaches vocal harmony and guitar. He is featured on the Dark Shadow Recording Harmony Training Series CDs with Russell Moore, Ronnie Bowman, Adam Steffey and Ned Luberecki. Tony DeMarco -- Workshops and Concert Thursday, April 14. Workshop: 6pm at the Folk School Concert: 8pm at Stone Cup Coffeehouse Tony DeMarco: Irish fiddler. If that sounds slightly off, you have only to listen his music to be cured of any preconceptions about the importance of ethnic purity in traditional music. There may have been a time when Irish music in New York City was played exclusively by Irish immigrants and their offspring, while their Italian neighbors strummed mandolins and sang opera. But the Big Apple really is a melting pot, at least for some of its disparate immigrant elements. Before World War II it really wasn't very common for Italian and Irish Americans to marry each other. By the 1950s, however, this kind of ethnic mixing was fairly normal in Tony's native Brooklyn, where the Italians and Irish lived side by side and attended the same parish churches. Tony was born on May 20, 1955, the second of three children raised in East Flatbush by Paul DeMarco and his wife, the former Patricia Dempsey. Paul, a grandson of Italian immigrants, was a teenage lightweight boxing star who turned down an offer to turn pro and work with lightweight champ Paddy "Billygoat" DeMarco in order to pursue a more conventional career on Wall Street. Tony's maternal grandfather Jimmy Dempsey was a New York City cop and a son of Irish immigrants who married Philomena "Minnie" Fenimore, one of several Italian-American siblings who married into Brooklyn Irish families. Read more and register for Tony's all-instrument Irish music workshop here! r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=86udl9cab&et=1105091922124&s=707&e=001B8lz5CPyuqq0f-cngRkFgbJ1hlS-KetwiiZwDYwTOO6KWMt0moVVvo0xGMFlsDJ9CE-xEkefUp-6PqOE6WoxSxtgdTrR_jB5cVNRjaXXzAg9mGkQm4Mxfjummt3NGkL97WsRPqEj3Xotr0CxiOI73WSWmWdvNr4wL7zk5D13VPI1FOPbKGnnkbiyKXEtKh4wPhFz9QxO5aE=Matt Evans and Christie Burns, directors Folk School of Chattanooga 423-827-8906 www.chattanoogafolk.com

Tony DeMarco -- Workshops and Concert Thursday, April 14. ***ALL INSTRUMENTS*** Workshop: 6pm at the Folk School, $20 Concert: 8pm at Stone Cup Coffeehouse, suggested donation: $10 Tony DeMarco: Irish fiddler. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jazz Series at Barking Legs off to a big start with Matthew Shipp: Friday, April 15 @ 8:30pm $15adv/$17door We haven't seen a show bring this much excitement and anticipation to the Barking Legs community, and we have a strong feeling it'll be a sell-out show. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gareth Asher & The Earthlings, featuring Emily Kate Boyd At the Folk School of Chattanooga Sunday, April 17 @ 8pm - $10 at the door On his third independent release, singer-songwriter Gareth Asher is coming of age as a writer, delivering a well-crafted and emotionally charged body of work. His latest album "Between the Smiles and Tear", released April 2010, is intensified with bold electric guitars, steady driving percussion and balanced with lush string arrangements provided by members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Asher recorded the album in home town Atlanta, with close friend and brilliant artist Clay Cook (Marshall Tucker Band, Zac Brown Band) once again producing and mixing. As a touring artist, Asher has shared the stage with Shawn Mullins, Glen Philips (o/ Toad the Wet Sprocket), Emerson Hart, Angie Aparo, Corey Smith, Sister Hazel and more. www.garethasher.comChattanooga's own Emily Kate Boyd is currently touring as a bass player and singer with Gareth Asher & The Earthlings. Her latest project, JoyScout, is an Atlanta, GA collective of musicians focused around Emily Kate Boyd and Nicki Thrailkill, invent an eclectic identity through their exploration of folk rock, pop and southern soul. Often performing as an acoustic duo, supporting musicians rotate in and out of JoysScout's lineup, contributing such diverse sounds as lap steel, upright bass and beat machines.

Every year I call for volunteers for your ticket. Here is how it works. Send us $50 telling us you want to be a volunteer. We will send you a ticket and put your name on a list. When you arrive you report to us. You will be given a job to do. It might be five hours all at once or divided between two days. After you have put in your five hours we will refund your $50. I learned I get the most dependable volunteers doing it this way, If you don't show up to help I get to keep your money. I will have about a dozen of these slots available. Some of them might even include helping us tear down on Sunday. Email me before you send your money to make sure I still have slots. Please spread the word about the show. We want to let you know about two special opportunities this week to check out some of the classes we're offering for the next 8 weeks. You're invited to attend the first meeting of these classes, no charge, just to see what they're all about. You might be interested in continuing with more classes, or at the very least you'll have an idea of what classes at the Folk School are like. Songwriters' Forum (Thursday 6pm) A personal note from our friend, Tom Power: The Folk School of Chattanooga is offering a course on songwriting. The class aims to take the aspiring student step by step through the process of putting ideas into words and music. There will be open discussions on how to make interesting chord choices, developing style, and how to choose just the right words for a song. It'll be a lesson in trial and error, rewriting (believe me they'll be many), humility and triumph. Leadbelly (Huddie Ledbetter) said the best time to write songs is in the morning. I think his point was that the mind was fresh, then, and ready for some creative output (my thoughts). I've found this to be true. The mind and the body begin to slowdown as the day progresses. A very famous songwriter advocated a small hand-held tape recorder, a legal pad and a quiet place. He also recommended keeping pencil and paper (a pocket-size notebook) at the ready to write down ideas, lyrics. Also, any songwriter worth his snuff, will use a thesaurus and a rhyming dictionary on occasion. Go get them post haste. One problem with forum-type songwriting sessions is a particular person is going to be more adept than another. He will want to show off by belittling others' songs while promoting his own. He'll be the more skilled musician, have a pleasant voice, and be the most outgoing and try to "take over" the class. Let's not be he. And anyway, why did he sign up anyway if he didn't need to learn anything? My point being: we're all in it together. As a group, a committee if you will, our goal is to leave this forum with, at the very least, one song we can be proud of. The group will work on tunes with no lyrics, lyrics with no tune, ideas for songs, unfinished songs and, generally, problems you are facing as you try to bare your soul on paper. Keep an open mind and try to realize that, as far as songwriting goes, we're all in the same boat when it comes to wanting to create something. Email sent to past members of class: The newest edition of classes for songwriters looks promising. There will be more time devoted to helping the individual with his particular song; the goal being to leave at the end of the course with at least one song that satisfies the customer. There will be tips from proven songwriters on how to get the job done. Personally, I've gotten a bunch of ideas from Jimmy Webb's book Tunesmith and, since it's a forum, I will be glad to pass on what I've read. In the same vein attendees will share information on how they come up with songs. www.chattanoogafolk.com/songwriters-forum/---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Traditional Ensemble (Friday 5pm), taught by Matt Evans: Brief Description: Get started and gain confidence playing with a group of musicians. We will work on few different traditions and group settings so that student can get a feel for playing in a jam session or a band. For: Students who have reached at least an intermediate stage on their instruments, but who are not yet ready to jump right into full-speed jam sessions. For the following instruments, you should be able to, Fiddle: play a handful of tunes at a moderate tempo, and pick up tunes phrase by phrase or by tablature/notation Mandolin: same as fiddle, and have a knowledge of your basic chords and rhythm playing Guitar: knowledge of your basic chords and playing rhythm; playing runs and melodies are a bonus and we'll work on incorporating these more advanced techniques into group playing Banjo: understanding how to tune for different keys and a good rhythmic approach; we'll work on incorporating advanced melodies on the banjo into the group playing, and coming up with simple rhythmic and melodic improvisations for unfamiliar tunes Bass: understanding how to follow chord charts or guitar players for finding the bass notes that match chord changes Other instruments can use the above descriptions to gain some idea of the skills needed. For prospective students who feel they may be getting in over your head: don't be too afraid of taking the plunge; a good way to never raise the level of your playing is to always avoid situations that challenge you. You may not always keep up, or pick up as much as some of the more experienced students, but a willingness to stretch yourself will always reward you. Goals: To gain experience, confidence, and have lots of fun! Detailed Description: We will work on building a repertoire of tunes the group can play together. I hope most of the tunes we work on will be familiar to most of the students. I also hope all students pick up some new material. We will proceed slowly, and hope to have a half dozen to a dozen tunes we can play well together by the end of the eight weeks. When a tune is introduced we will play it slowly, and play it over and over with pauses for questions and recommendations. Each week we will spend time playing over tunes introduced earlier in the semester. We will play in both unison formats and break-taking formats, and incorporate some singing into the group playing. We will talk about jam etiquette and what to expect from playing in open jam sessions. We will also talk about how to turn the class experience into building arrangements for performance bands. Recommended materials for students: Tuner, capo; a device for recording music is not absolutely necessary, but highly recommended. www.chattanoogafolk.com/traditional-ensemble-slow-jam/ If you're able to come on Thursday at 6pm, or Friday at 5pm this week, please join us as our guest! Matt Evans and Christie Burns, directors Folk School of Chattanooga 423-827-8906 www.chattanoogafolk.com Folk School of Chattanooga is a program of the St. Andrew's Center, a 501(c)3 tax-exempt agency in Chattanooga.
