Scenario: Out with your dog you come across a hawk on the sidewalk, wings spread, mouth open and looking generally either injured or at the least in severe shock (evidence, it doesn't fly off when you pass). What would you do? Just curious

I would call McKamey (sp?) and go from there
and try explaining why I now have a dog to the wife.

I believe TWRA would have been the right call.

Actually call the TWRA or me, I know the numbers of several members of the birders club.
If you called McKamey, they should know to call TWRA

First I'd take out my phone and take a picture. You don't see something like that every day. I would then look to see if it was guarding a kill and if it wasn't I'd call Bob.

Well, since I didn't have my cell phone with me at that moment, but did have my high prey drive dog and my bicycle, I kept going home. I dropped off Strega, grabbed my phone and drove back to check and see if it was indeed hurt or in need of help. When I got there figuring I'd call Bob if it WERE hurt, I pulled out my cell, walked up to where I'd seen it and there it was. It was no longer wing spread on the ground, it was up against a window. Cars were driving by it to get to the bank and it probably hopped that way to keep from getting hit. As soon as it saw me (and before I could snap a picture) it jumped up and after a first false start, flew away. I figured if it was able to fly now, it didn't need help.
Bob was the first thought I had for "who ya gonna call" though.

[grin] The bird probably hit a window and strega scared him. Wings spread is a defensive stance, makes him look bigger.

I figured he hit the window and was stunned on the ground, just wasn't sure if the hit caused damage or if it just stunned him. There's a reason I didn't stop when I had Strega, but it was in that position already, didn't go into position just when we came around the corner.
I cannot even attempt to help a puppy when I have Strega with me. He'll either try to kill or run off anything.

My first thought would be to call the Nature Center.

some of my staff at connooga this past weekend saw an owl crash into the doors of the choo choo's convention center (the doors near finley lecture hall) the owl slammed into the doors. then flew up & hit the ceiling then out and perched on a nearby tree for a couple of hours. somebody told me it was probably a barn owl & it looked like it had a five foot wingspan.

I carry a coarse burlap bag in the car for such purposes. It's thick enough to protect you from the talons but porous enough to let the creature breathe.
And you should SEE and HEAR those passed-out drunks in cars when they get a raptor deposited on them!
[the above characterization is a work of satire. No one should ever harm another living creature]

This is THE critter in which goomba mentioned. I saw it swoop in by the main doors going after some girls hat. And the wingspan mentioned is correct if not bigger. The frackking thing was HUGE!! (photo by Thomas Blanks)
