I recommend the Flintstone area of North Georgia (south of St. Elmo).
Bucolic countryside untrammeled by the vicissitudes of City life.
Great public schools close to home.
Lovely valley views, clean air and water.
Neighborly people you can trust.
Good Luck.

Nice area. There are others, too. And Tsavo and some of the other LE (law enforcement) contributiors can give you some idea of the relative safety of them.
How far/long are you willing to commute to work? Any other special considerations?

With a 25 mile radius to work with, you might also consider the southwest part of Bradley County. Much lower taxes than Hamilton, it is more rural so you might be likely to find a small farm, and you can get to Chattanooga, Cleveland and North Georgia very quickly.
My son attends Black Fox Elementary up there, and it's a very good school.

I say Meigs County, most house rentals are word of mouth though, people afraid to post for rent, may get undesireable tenants and are nearly impossible to get rid of. School buses are free to ride. In Meigs you can have dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, goats, whatever, people don't care.

I have a friend who sold her mini farm in North Georgia where she kept her horses. I'll check and see if she knows of any for lease.

Ask questions about what interest you here. You will get information on the neighborhoods that way.

It was a good middle-class neighborhood back then. Now, it's mixed between good and bad, much like the Brainerd area - one block may be good, one block may be the ghetto. I would not move back to that area.

I grew up a block over on Signal View St. My dad sold the old home place about four years ago. It's an older neighborhood and relatively safe. I would live there but my kids are grown. I'm not sure about the schools.

Let me add that although I love that area and would move into it in a heartbeat it isn't what you have described that you are looking for. The houses on that street have relatively small lots and livestock would be out of the question, including chickens. But it is convenient to everything and would be a great place to land until you found exactly what you are looking for.

@ justin
id rather go to the other place my wife showed me, exact for that reason, here in germany, houses are to close to eachother, and id like to have some air to breathe... and then there is the chicken thing...

Yes, it's in Red Bank and everything Justin said is right (as always ) But livestock would be out of the question. If you are just renting, you might consider it. It's about 7 miles from Downtown.

Nicole, a good rule of thumb for this area is: if you work north of the (Tennessee) river, LIVE north of the river, and conversely, if you work south of the river, live south of the river.

If you work in TN, you'll want to live in TN... but North GA is great. From all I've read, I would say find a place to rent for a few months (some may require a min of 6 mnths) and take that time to look for a nice place out in the country. This is possibly the best time to buy (if you have the financial means) with prices being down and interest rates being low. Good luck. (You found a great blog to ask questions... Most everyone on here is very helpful)
