Friday NIght Singalong - Friday, Feb 17, 7pm at the Folk School-- Free
This is a free gathering of people who like to sing together, led tonight by our friend David Ramsey. Byob, and bring a song to share if you like! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Forever Bluegrass presents: Bobby Osborne and the Rocky Top X-Press Friday, Feb 17, 8pm at Mike's Music, 1546 Burnt Mill Rd, Flintstone
Want to know more about bluegrass? Why not ask a bluegrass legend who's been performing it since the 40s? See if you recognize any names included in his online bio (excerpt below), and then join the Forever Bluegrass team out in Flintstone tonight for what's sure to be an amazing show!
Bobby started out in music wanting to sing like Ernest Tubb. Bobby played the guitar, and learned everything that he could by listening to Ernest on the Grand Ole Opry. One night, while waiting for Tubbs' appearance on the Opry, Bobby hear a sound come over his parents' radio that was to change his life. He couldn't believe all of that incredible music, that barrage of notes coming over the airwaves could be made by one man. When the song was over The Solumn Old Judge said, "friends that was Earl Scruggs with his fancy banjo with Bill Monroe and his BlueGrass Boys." Bobby knew that some way, some how, he had to see this Scruggs guy and see how did that. Bill Monroe announced on the radio, that he and the band would be in Dayton, Ohio the next day. As Bobby and his parents and brother and sister lived in Dayton, Bobby asked his Dad if he would take him to see Bill Monroe the next day. His Dad said he would, and that he like to see them himself. Bobby's Dad told him, "well one thing I know for sure, Bill's the one that plays the fiddle". The next day, Bobby saw Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, Chubby Wise, Howard Watts and Earl Scruggs. Bobby found out in person, that one man could indeed make all of that music when he saw Scruggs play. Seeing these five men perform together, was ubforgettable to Bobby, (he can still tell you what each one of them was wearing that fateful day in Dayton). It was the sound of the five-string banjo, played by Earl Scruggs, that got Bobby interested in what has come to be known as BlueGrass Music. Like so many things in Bobby's life, it's amazing how many things came full circle, and how quickly. It's worth pointing out, that Bobby set out to be a country singer, and his biggest vocal influence was Ernest Tubb. That's one reason why his singingstyle was so unique. He wasn't trying to be a tenor singer like Bill Monroe or Ira Louvin, he was singing like he wanted to. He just happened to have been blessed with a one of a kind vocal range. Bobby was alway a guitar player, until he teamed up with Jimmy Martin. That's when Bobby became a mandolin player. And what a mandolin player. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Slim Pickins and the Snake Doctors - Saturday, Feb 18 - Lindsay St. Hall $5 cover and cash bar - Doors open at 7, show starts at 8. Family friendly! Another great show in this spectacular venue, being filmed for EPBfi channel 200. The Folk School is so proud of Slim Pickins and the Snake Doctors, so if you want to experience the music that really excites and inspires us, come to the Lindsay St. Hall on Saturday! And as a warmup to the big night.... Saturday at 11am come to the Folk School to have lunch with live music from the Snake Doctors! This is a free, family-friendly event, so bring the kids (or just bring yourself) and enjoy a bowl of soup. It's free, but your donations are always warmly accepted. Click here to see the Snake Doctors in action, or here to read an article in the Pulse about the Snake Doctors. P.S. The Snake Doctors are currently booking dates for their Chattanooga Hatch Festival tour, during which they'll play indoors, outdoors, at churches, offices, theaters, museums, and just basically all over town. You can book the Snake Doctors for a fun American roots music show to share with your friends, family, coworkers, etc. between April 13 and 22. Call 423-827-8906 for booking. The final Monday night session at the Market St. Tavern Monday, Feb 20, 6:30-9:30pm, Market St. Tavern From Christie: Well, it's been a good run. I've lost count, but I'm pretty sure it's been at least three years that old time musicians have been gathering at the Market St. Tavern almost every Monday night to play Southern Appalachian fiddle tunes together. We've played D tunes, A tunes, G tunes, modal tunes, and lately we've enjoyed the pleasures of tunes in the key of C (thanks to our Mississippi friends). Hootin', hollerin', honey badgers, harmonies, crooked tunes, cross tunings, fox chases, tunes where we didn't know the beginning from the end, but we stomped along and kept sawing away anyway. And actually, with the friendships that have developed inside this weekly circle, I know that's exactly how this is going to go; we're going to keep at it, wherever that might take place... and we'll leave the Market St. Tavern with great memories and a gratefulness for the hours and hours of laughter, tunes, and musical development that took place there.
It's been decided that the Market St. Tavern session will end with one last hurrah, this Monday night, Feb 20. I can't make any promises, but this could be a pretty rowdy session. Come on down, bring the kids, bring your instrument, share a gourmet cupcake, a few beers, and a few tunes.
There aren't any new plans for another session to replace this one on Monday nights, but we do have a weekly session scheduled on Wednesdays at the Camp House (resuming on Feb 22). Questions? Get in touch!! 423-827-8906 Ask for Matt or Christie music@chattanoogafolk.com

Sleep with Claire Lynch!!! Hello Everyone, Well I bet that subject matter got your attention; my apologies to the lovely Claire Lynch. But you can sleep in the same location as Claire Lynch for 5 days if you like. Our friends at Camp McDowell started a folk school a couple of years ago; you can learn to weave baskets, quilt, or play music. What I am going to tell you about is the music school coming up next month. You can go spend 5 days in the wilderness of North Alabama. Lodging can range from a dormitory, to a private room. Your meals are also included. Now going to Camp McDowell would be worth it for the relaxation and hiking. You could probably take a different trail everyday. But during this 5 day period you can have Clair Lynch help you with your singing, I am not kidding. Clair is just one of the all star instructors the Folk School has lined up for you. What if you are a guitar player? Well then you would take your instruction from Stephen Mougin, he is the guitar player for the Sam Bush Band. What if you own a bass and always wanted some good instruction? Well you would bring your bass and have the legendary Mark Schatz give you 5 days of instruction. Mark is also the bass player for the Clair Lynch Band. What about the mandolin? Well Roland White or Jason Baily would be your instructor. If you are wanting to improve your banjo skills, and who does not need that, Herb Trotman will spend 5 days making it look easy. This is probably one of the best instructor line ups in the country and is certainly at the finest location. The staff and atmosphere at Camp McDowell are certainly world class. Here is a link www.folkschool.dioala.org/ and a phone #205/387-1806 and of course you can always figure out how to contact Camp McDowell. This would also make a great gift for that special person you know wanting to improve their musical skills. There are packages available where you can bring a tag along spouse. He does not have to go to music class and can go for long walks in the woods while you learn. Anyway contact them for more info. I am steve@theacousticcafe.com. Please help us to spread the word about what we do. steve masterson

Through the spring there is Live Bluegrass music every Sat from 7:00-9:00 at the Ocoee Dam Deli on HWY 64 in Ocoee, TN. To my knowledge there is no admission but I would guess they expect you to purchase food/beverage. No Alcohol sold.
A couple of weeks ago they had Lone Mountain Band featuring Bobby Burns on Mandolin, Jim Pankey on Banjo and the award winning Roy Curry on guitar. Lone Mountain Band will play again at the Ocoee Dam Deli on 4/14.

Hello Everyone, I know I told you a week or so ago but this is just another reminder. If you are serious about learning more about singing, playing the guitar, mandolin, bass, or banjo, this is the perfect opportunity. You have the chance to spend April 16th thru 19th in the secluded mountains of North Alabama in the care of the most hospitable people I know. The Alabama Folk School at Camp McDowell has a top notch line up of instructors. How they got all these people to take time out of their touring schedule to come land in Alabama is still a mystery to me. I think the potential jams in the evening would be worth the price of admission. Keep in mind you can bring along a non participating friend to spend the week with you. He can go for walks while you are in class and join you for meals and you will have your evenings together. There are a few options on your lodging in that you can stay in a dorm or a private room. I know the food will be good and all the people friendly. Turns out that long time ago Front Porch String Band bass player Murray Ross, is on the board of directors of Camp McDowell. I think he was with them for their first four albums. Small world. Anyway here is a link www.folkschool.dioala.org/Classes/calendar.htmlwhere you can get more information. I can be reached at steve@theacousticcafe.com steve masterson

From the article: "Fleck repeatedly praised the Folk School for offering students a chance to learn techniques first-hand that he was forced to grope blindly after when he started. The school's teachers, he said, put the students on a fast track to musical improvement. 'You guys are lucky to have the Folk School,' he said. 'They'll save you a lot of time.' Fleck ended his visit with a well-received duet of the tune 'Katy Hill' with local real estate magnate, philanthropist and bluegrass fiddler Fletcher Bright." Fiddle and Ukulele Saturday classes at Bright School* For 2nd and 3rd graders Eight week course, July 14-Sept 1 11:00 am-Noon Fee: $120 Goals: to have the students playing and singing "Boil them Cabbage Down" together. Other songs we will be working on learning include "Groundhog", "Oh Susannah", and "Old Joe Clark". Students will learn the basics of rhythm and melody by participating in rhythm games, sing-alongs, and play-party games. They will be exposed to the fiddle and the ukulele, and be able to try both instruments out. Students do not need an instrument of their own to start the class, but we encourage parents to plan on obtaining a fiddle or ukulele for their child some time during the first four weeks. The teachers can help parents with what/where to purchase the instrument. Students will be provided with a cd of the class repertoire to listen to at home. Most days there will be two teachers for the class, but on some days there will be three. Parents can attend class or drop children off. Once students obtain their own instrument, we encourage them to practice five to ten minutes a day. Click here to register! *Anyone can register for this course taught by the Folk School of Chattanooga-- you do not have to be enrolled as a student at Bright School. Questions? Starts Tomorrow!! Harmonica Class with Ed Huey 6-week Harmonica 1 class starts Tuesday, Oct 9 at 6:30. Classes show you how to getting started: hand position, breathing, tongue vamping, tongue blocking to play single notes and chords, harmonica tablature (reading harmonica music), hand expression. We will learn a Railroad Piece and four blues songs. No experience necessary, you need 15 minutes a day to practice and a 10 hole diatonic harmonica, key of A. This class begins Oct 9 and runs for six weeks. Last class will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 13. ---------------------------------- New SongSeeds Class Added on Fridays: SongSeeds music class for babies and toddlers is now meeting on Wednesdays at 3:30pm and Fridays at 11am. The developmental benefits of learning musical skills and confidence from an early age, have proven themselves over and over again. These Music classes build on your child's natural enthusiasm for music and movement. Children ages 6 months to 4 years and their parents/caregivers will meet weekly for a 45 minutes session of singing songs, playing instruments, learning chants and rhymes, tonal patterns and rhythm patterns, playing with a variety of instruments and dancing in a relaxed non-performance oriented setting. This class will meet on Fridays at 11am if we can collect at least 4 participants. Please register in advance, or call to make sure this class is running as scheduled. 423-827-8906. About the instructor: Audi Wilken is a singer-songwriter with a longstanding musical recording and educational career. She recently relocated to Eastern Tennessee, where she works as an artist, music teacher, theatre instructor and voice coach. ---------------------------------------- Daniel Bachman Plays a Fierce Guitar Monday, Oct 15 - 9pm at the Folk School of Chattanooga $5 / members free Let's all snuggle up with our cups of hot cider and enjoy a splendid October evening together at the Folk School! Daniel Bachman is a 22-year-old musician born and raised in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He has been playing what he describes as "psychedelic appalachia" since he was a teenager, releasing small run editions of tapes, CDs and LPs for the past three years, with a sound that evolved from drones and banjos to a now guitar centered focus. Touring off and on since the age of 17, Bachman has managed to cover thorough ground across the US, sharing stages with like minded folk such as fellow Fredericksburg native Jack Rose, for whom he fashioned the artwork for the posthumous release of 'Luck In The Valley'. His newest effort is the full length LP 'Seven Pines', sprung from a year living and working in the city of Philadelphia. The sound results in a combination of homesick worried blues and the ecstatic buzz of fresh experience and a new life in unknown territory. Familiar and known, but also seeking to access memories from lives past, dead and gone. -------------------------------------- NEW HOME!! Just off Main St. 1800 Rossville Ave., Suite 4.
