Apparently, we've not been using the proper name of our southern neighbor. You know, the one we've been calling "Mexico" for as long as any of us can remember. Except that Mexico is not really Mexico. As it turns out, the actual name of the country is the United States of Mexico, which was adopted back in 1824 as nod to the other United States on this continent. Well, after 188 years, apparently the Mexican government has come to the realization that no one is going to refer to their country as the U.S.M. and have proposed officially changing the name of the country. "The name of our country no longer needs to emulate that of other nations," Mexican President Felipe Calderon told a news conference. "Forgive me for the expression, but Mexico's name is Mexico."
