I see no "Starbucks, Speciality, Folgers, whatever it is it'd better be delivered by an IV drip" option....

Only coffee I like is either Starbucks "Java Chip" or "Caramel" Frappachino (sp)
or
Panera Bread ICE Caramel
I go to Starbucks probably 2x a week because it is the closest place to go to on my lunch break.
I don't really like the taste of coffee so, it has to be cleverly hidden under the disguise of a milk shake.

While I no longer go to the Stone Cup for an in-house coffee session (parking meter fiasco), I make my own coffee at home with a special blend Jenifer makes for me -- I'm on my way to buy 5 lbs of beans for the Kordax household right now....

While Jamaica Blue Mountain might be the best coffee I've ever had, I must say that as with beer, most of the time I am drinking coffee for effect, not flavor. For that, Folgers (or JFG) is quite ok.
As for Starbucks, every time I've ordered their plain ordinary black coffee, it has been burnt. I don't do the fru-fru coffee, so I can't tell if that stuff is any good, but if they can't get plain black coffee right, I don't hold much hope for anything else.
And as for the Stone Cups and Mudpies of the world, it isn't the coffee I don't like, it is about 80% of the clientele. Too many trustafarians and such make me itch.

IMO there are two kinds of coffee driven by the 'why'
Morning coffee just to get a kick in the head to get going - Folgers works for that
Good coffee for enjoyment at other times. More often than not I make it at home, or go to a nice coffee shop in a pinch. Starbucks is the "McDonalds of the Bean" and would be a last resort.

I am a coffee addict but I must admit I do NOT like Starbucks. Not sure how they roast their beans but it always tastes burnt to me.
I have to admit McDonald's makes pretty good java-and I miss Chattz now that I don't work downtown any more. Panera coffee is pretty good as is Barney's....

I make coffee every morning at home using a "grind and brew" type machine. Usually buy our beans at Greenlife or Fresh Market. Pretty much the only times I have been to a Starbucks has been in an airport where the choices are slim and none.

There's a little coffee shop in Happeville that serves some very good coffee. I always wonder how these little independent shops come up with the good coffee that they do... or at least some of them.

I buy coffee for home brewing at www.katscoffees.com -usually the gourmet blend although I occasionally throw in some flavored beans. Best coffee for waking up in the AM used to be Dunkin Donuts.... Shannon

I have never been impressed by Starbucks. I am like Daworm and have found that the regular coffee at Starbucks coffee always tastes burned. I'm happy with my Folgers, Maxwell House, or whatever coffee I find at the grocery store. I usually turn the coffee maker on when I get up and make it again in the afternoon. I turn it off and set it up fot the next morning when I go to bed.
Yes, I have a brown thumb from always having a coffee mug in my hand, but I was never in the service

I have never tried Starbucks, hearing much bad commentary on quality there. I like Stone Cup, buy the beans to take home and grind as needed. I sometimes have a cup and bagel at the Stone Cup on Frazier (the term "North Shore" I decline to use.) Laughed at Da Worm's characterization of trendy coffee houses in Chattanooga: And as for the Stone Cups and Mudpies of the world, it isn't the coffee I don't like, it is about 80% of the clientele. Too many trustafarians and such make me itch. I understand his reaction, but I am more indifferent to surroundings. I would have said the crowd was more of a "Ink and Hardware" crowd, probably because of the tattoo place up the street. Mostly, as I said, I buy beans to go. Must...have...new...cup... Now.

Assuming you don't burn your coffee too, is it the coffee or is it the preparation that makes it taste so bad in the store?

Worm, I can't stand Starbucks coffee made in their stores. It does have a burnt taste to me. A co-worker gave me a gift certificate from Starbucks, so I bought coffee there and made it at home. It is better when you make it at home, but it still has a twang to it. Hard to describe.

Starbucks' coffee tastes burnt because of the roast. The roast everything dark, (at least everything I've ever had there). Essentially, it is burnt. What this does for them is give them a unique signature flavor that people can recognize. At Greyfriars, we used to call them "Charbucks."
It's not for everyone, but they must be doing something right. I drink it at work because at twice the price it's better than our cafeteria's coffee. To me nothing is worse than drinking weak coffee. I'll swill the diarrhea out of a wino's ass for 45 proof, but weak coffee? eww...
Specialty coffee is just like specialty anything. Most people don't see the point, but those that care, care a lot.

Interesting Milk. All I know is the Starbucks at Eastgate has the most pleasant and perky employees of any that I have been to and they call me the Molasses Cookie lady (I am probably the only one that eats them)

I've never been a huge fan of coffee. I'll drink it every once in a while. I never did think it was worth to pay those high prices at Starbucks either. Speaking of though...they're building a Starbucks on Hwy 58 right next to 153,
