Just a random sort of thread but I'm curious what are your comfort foods? I used to have a few but seeing as I can't seem to find vandekamp's frozen enchiladas out here my comfort food of choice is generally grilled cheese with a cup of tomato soup. And yes I know the enchiladas I mentioned were not quality mexican food but it's one of those things I ate when I was younger so

Add me to the list of fans of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. I usually make my grilled cheese sandwiches with American, cheddar, and swiss cheeses.
And I'd have that for lunch today if I could. Mmmmm.

Fried chicken or meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and English peas. English peas go on top of the mashed potatoes.

Grilled cheese sandwich, sharp cheddar cheese AND some white cheese, swiss most often, but mozzarella or jack cheese sometimes, on sourdough bread grilled open faced, then brown mustard and tomato slices in the middle.
Yum.

Cornbread (not corn-cake, leave the sugar for pies), mashed potatoes and gravy, biscuits and gravy... It's obvious I've been very comfortable lately.

I like hot cornbread in cold sweet milk. Eating/drinking it like that just makes me feel good all over. My father mixes his cornbread with buttermilk but I like it with sweet milk.

*shudders* That's just a waste of good cornbread IMHO but to each his own I guess. Is that a "southern" thing?

It's an "I grew up with it" thing is all I know. Cornbread, pinto beans and onions is another food I grew up with that still makes me feel good all over.

I like a good cup of Peppermint or Earl Grey tea. As for foods....Hershey's chocolate or home made biscuits & honey.
One more.....beef stew (cooked all night in the crock pot) with the darkest rye bread I can find to sop up the juice.

You know, I just can't resist being a smart aleck, sometimes. MY beef stew recipe:
One pound of cubed stew beef One small onion 1/2 pound of baby carrots 4-8 scrubbed (not peeled) potatoes (depending on size) 4 celery stalks chopped into 1" pieces One small green pepper cored & diced One can of chopped/diced mushrooms One can of beef broth One can of cream of mushroom soup - *OPTIONAL(You can use 1/4 cup of corn starch or flour to thicken instead, if you prefer) 1 Bay leaf 1 teaspoon of Basil A dash of Oregeno A pinch of Paprika A tad of Thyme A little Rosemary A touch of Garlic Salt Salt & Pepper to taste (I prefer LESS salt) (I sometimes will throw some Sage in, if the mood strikes me)
****Add just enough water to cover all the meat/vegetables.
Place all ingredients (in no particular order) in a large crock pot. Heat on HIGH for 2 - 4 hours. Turn setting to LOW for AT LEAST another 3 - 6 hours, depending on how "mushy" you like your veggies. I usually have my stew cooking by around 9 pm so that by Midnight, I can turn the crock pot on LOW and go to sleep. When either my wife or I get up in the morning, we turn it off and let it cool to be placed in the fridge for later OR just let it simmer until lunch, stirring occasionally so it doesn't get too well done. You can adjust the start time to finish at your desired meal hour.
Serve with a large loaf of the darkest rye bread you can find.
This recipe also works well with venison, especially if you use 1/2 beef & 1/2 venison.

Tea is definitely my drink of choice that fits into the comfort food range as well but I prefer specific ones-chai usually is what I choose but sometimes cinnamon tea or constant comet.
Thought about this a bit later today when I was munching on one but sugar cookies-not ones made with lemon extract/flavour in them though-migraine inducing for me x__x I prefer ones made with almond extract but the usual vanilla extract ones are lovely-if I can't get my paws on those shortbread cookies work like the ones you see in tins constantly around xmas etc.

Oooooohhhh...that reminded me of home made short bread. My mom makes some killer short bread each time she visits.

When I was younger my mother and I lived with her boyfriend who was british-we would visit his parents for Sunday dinner each week and his mother made killer shortbread.
I blame that woman for my love of tea and for tea and shortbread being comfort foods for me. <3

I'm in the tomato soup and grilled cheese camp, too. I prefer my tomato soup mixed with milk, not water, with shredded cheddar sprinkled in it. Oooey gooey cheesy goodness!
Loaded baked potatoes or potato soup is quite comforting, too, but I understand what Nana's saying too. Yummy 'bad for me things' are usually craved, like fried jalapeno poppers or such.

Banana nut bread, my grandmother's recipe, straight out of the oven, slathered with butter and a tall, cold glass of milk. *sigh* Can't wait for the pecans to come in.
