Did there used to be a place here with the name cow palace? What kind of place was it?
Also, does anyone remember the name of the little restaurant on MLK near UTC. I think that it was kind of small and was similar to a waffle house. It was a chain I believe.

There was a Michael's Cow Palace in Knoxville. There was a Michael's here but I don't know if it ever had the Cow Palace with it.

There was Michael's Cow Palace on Brainerd Rd. owned by the Jorgenson family, hope I got that spelling right. Is was located on the Brainerd side of the tunnel, on the right, I think that building is a title company now. The same family would open Michaels on Brainerd Rd & Lee Hwy. That building is still there, out of business and becoming an eye sore. The same family did have the Michaels in Knoxville, not sure if they are still in business. It was near West End Mall. The Michaels on Brainerd Rd, the original, played host to some of the city's elite, a night spot for attorneys, out of town businessmen, politicians etc. They had live entertainment and a very nice atmosphere. The Michaels #2, at Brainerd Rd & Lee Hwy was a little more stuffy, as far as the dining goes, but was a night spot not to be missed during the period between 1990-2001, if I recall. However, it was without live entertainment, only a disc jockey, and the down fall came when it was rumored to have drug sales, assaults in the establishment. About the Waffle House type near UTC, I think it was Longhorn on MCCallie, not MLK, and it was one of several in town at the time, including one on Rossville Blvd and one on N. Market.

Yes, that was one of Knoxville's finer coke and pokes. It closed about a year ago because of trouble with the law and a lawsuit, but opened "under new management" as The Palace. It's always been sleazy.

The Black Angus on Cherokee Blvd. was owned by Bill & Betty Stover, not related to Michaels Cow Palace. However, Bill & Betty Stover once owned the Bellmont Club alongside Lookout Mnt. Most of the wait staff at Michaels Cow Palace were former employees on the mountain, either Bellmont or Fairyland or both.

I miss the salad bar at the Fifth Quarter on Brainerd Road. Didn't the waiters and waitresses dress in costumes way back? I was a little kid and we would go there for special occasions, and I swear I thought I remembered that. Maybe I was dreaming. But I do remember the salad bar, even as a kid I liked it.

I think when they first opened it was called something else and they did dress like pirates and other characters.

i grew up in knoxville, moved here in '84 and remember daryl's there, absolutely loved it. you could eat in a cage and there were all kinds of former carnival/circus stuff. had my first shirley temple there too hehe. don't remember a michael's though. must have been after we moved. last i heard daryl's closed down for whatever reason ...always thought that some year it might expand and we'd get one down here the one restaurant i've wanted to try is that mystery theatre thing. there was a guy in one of my classes at chatt state that works there and totally sold me on it. forgot about it til now, thanks for the reminder

Only one in town with anchovies to go on your Caesar Salad (or just eat, like I usually did...). I miss it too.

I was a told of a story recently from a friend who went to take his mom and dad to the old Sailmaker on Brainerd Road.
He had failed to warn his parents that the wait staff dressed in charactor, and he said about as soon as dad had been seated, the charactor, J. J. (Dyn-O-Mite) Jimmie Walker from the TV show 'Good Times' plopped down beside dad and started his comedy.
Dad, naturally being from the south, didn't watch black comedy TV and didn't know who J. J. was. Dad shoved that young man out of the booth, proceeded to casue a big scene and stormed out.
Dad never would go out to eat with him ever again!

Sailmaker was the name I was trying to think of. I never went during that period, only after it became Fifth Quarter. I also liked the anchovies. I remember the old Gulas on Lee Highway near the former Lowe's used to give you anchovies on the Greek salad.

After it closed, the Peddler moved up there.
edited to add -- Thanks, I was trying to remember the name when it was that. It was nice, I don't know why it didn't make it. It was packed whenever I went.

The Sailmaker was owned by Ray(?) Danver, who also had the Danvers sandwich shop down Brainerd Road (on the opposite side), and who is (was?) the "D" in Captain D's, and who also owned the Hungry Fisherman and more Shoney's than anyone else at the time.
I seem to remember that there was also some controversy around the Sailmaker when the guy who played a monk character was arrested for some form of inappropriate sexual contact and may have been a defrocked minister.
