STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Dairy economists predict the retail price of milk could rise as much as 30 cents per gallon — a 9 percent jump — by fall. The reasons include rising fuel and feed costs for farmers and increasing demand for milk products around the globe. The average retail price of whole milk could rise to $3.35 per gallon by October, up from $3.07 in January, said Ken Bailey, an agricultural economist at Penn State University who specializes in the dairy industry. A U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast also predicts an increase in the price that processors pay to farmers for raw milk. That is typically an indicator that the retail price of milk also will rise. complete story

Star has already been bitching about rising milk prices (we got through a gallon or more a week) - this is going to send her right over the egde. Which is often fun to watch, but that's a different thread.

With three kids, we go through at least a gallon a day. I guess I am gonna have to buy cheaper beer as an offset.

A 9% increase in Milk? I refute that. I saw him yesterday and must say that he looked very healthy.

I'd say that 9% is a very conservative estimate of my growth in the past year. Of course, I now have a half-pint size...

"With three kids, we go through at least a gallon a day" Tcrash, I know the feeling! I have just the two boys, but we're now buying milk 2 gallons at a time, and usually about every other day.

The government should pass a law.
It's for the chil'run.
The poor are being oppressed and deprived of necessities.
Ironically, milk is one of the things that doesn't cost us more up here. We're only paying $3.00 per gallon.

It's part of the carbon-offset program due to the flatulence created by the cows. Pay more and you're not guilty.

As a youth I had the experience of hanging around a dairy ranch my buddys folks owned. I've miked cows by hand and by machine. Since then milk has been eliminated from my personal beverage selections. I pretend cheese just happens and has nothing to do with cows.

I hate that milk's going up again. I've been watching all of the food prices rise over the past year, even at Aldi's (milk was 2.99/gal there the last time I bought it). Between the gas & food prices, most of us are getting stuck between a rock & a hard place.

Time to whip the family into shape...get them to eat what's put in front of them or go without. Might even need to consider going without heat next winter, too, if this keeps up. Hmmm, we could also stop using the electric dryer & utilize the free solar one!

I'd love to ride a bike to work. My challenge is to transport a 10 y/o, a 1 y/o along as well as myself - without having to leave the house before 0700 to ride 7 miles or so to E 3rd street. I'm currently carpooling with my children. 3/4 of the seats in my car are filled. I'd love to fill the 4th spot with my dh but he likes to have his freedom to leave work when he wants. He even has a free bus pass that I'd love to use myself.
Challenges abound.

Is there not a bus that can take the kids to school? There were buses when I went to school.... My dd goes to a magnet school 3 blocks from my office. I walk her to school from there. My (1 y/o) ds is in day care at my place of employment. It's a 3-for-1 deal...my dh works 4 blocks away, so despite the stress, driving in together was a pretty good deal for all of us. Maybe I'll offer to let him keep the car, so he can have what he wants & we can save on gas.

For my child's safety and general well-being and my peace of mind, riding the bus is not an option.
