A crash that killed a pedestrian yesterday has been ruled accidental.
21-yr-old Brice Nathaniel Stewart was attempting to cross the 1900 block of Gunbarrel Road yesterday in a non-crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle travelling southbound. According to witnesses, Stewart was leaving the side of Gunbarrel near Chili’s when he began to cross the road. One vehicle slowed for Stewart when the driver noticed him trying to cross. Another vehicle approaching in an adjacent lane could not see Stewart as he darted out into traffic.
The vehicle struck Stewart head-on. He was transported to Erlanger Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. No charges will be filed against the driver of the vehicle in this case.

I have seen several accidents happen and almost happen by people stopping in the middle of the block to let people out of parking lots or let people walk. It is dangerous and just in my opinion, they should let them wait until traffic is clear! Several years ago I almost got hit at the gas station near where that happened. I was pumping gas and someone stopped in mid-traffic to let a car cross, but not all lanes know this is happening. The car got hit and knocked up into the station about 5' from where I was pumping gas.

>>ah yes darwin strikes again <<
>>Was that the driver's name?<<
No, it certainly isn't funny, but I find the casual disregard and off-hand comments over the death of a fellow human being in a tragic accident distasteful. This smacks of the same sort of comments that were made in the thread regarding the woman who was struck and killed on the Market Street Bridge.
Someone is dead, someone has to live with knowledge that they've killed another human being, nothing in the report implies that the kid was "playing chicken" with the traffic or that the driver was disobeying any traffic laws, but there it is...
>>When will people learn that you are not so special or so badass for 2 tons of vehicle to give a s**t. <<
...because obviously one of the *two* victims (the one that died) purposely and knowingly stepped into oncoming traffic thinking himself so "badass" as to withstand the effects of the oncoming vehicle.

You know what? I'm over-reacting. Sorry. I just feel some sympathy for the family of the kid and the driver of the car over what seems to be a very unfortunate accident and the comments I read seemed a little callous. I withdraw my high horse.

I'm sorry for the comment, it was callous. I was going from thread to thread reading new comments and when I got to this one, I wasn't thinking about the whole thread, just the "Darwin Strikes" part. Now that you've called me on it, I do feel bad.

If you read the news accounts at Chattanoogan.com & TFP, they both clearly state the unfortunate victim chose to cross a busy street, in the middle (no crosswalk) and "darted" (their word) into traffic after ONE car had slowed for him. Seems to me that he either thought he was invincible, real special (cars certainly won't hit ME) or wasn't thinking his situation through very clearly. My POINT was that EVERYONE seems to forget that SUVs are 2 ton objects with inattentive NASCAR fans driving most of them around here. And, all those drivers think THEY are even MORE special than YOU because THEY drive a pretty car. To step into traffic ANYWHERE is a risk. To do so on Gunbarrel Road is highly unwise.
If everyone were to drive/walk/conduct their lives in a manner that respects EVERYONE ELSE, instead of selfishly claiming superiority to the rest of the world, then accidents as this would be far less common.
