Over 200 Volunteers In Fruitless Search For Brett Thomason Effort In Third Day To Locate Missing 19-Year-Old Boater posted February 22, 2009 A community wide volunteer search in search of missing 19-year-old Brett Thomason formed Sunday morning in the area of Riverbend Road on Riverbend Baptist Church in south Whitfield County. By late Sunday afternoon, officials said the community volunteers were beginning to come back in to the staging area and disband after searching wooded areas of south Whitfield County. Public Safety agencies from Murray, Gordon, Floyd and Forsyth counties along with Alpha SAR K-9 and DNR were still in the area assisting Whitfield County in the search. Ashlee Swilling of Whitfield County Emergency Services said, "There have been no new discoveries in the search for Thomason. The search will continue until the end of day or as anything new or of interest is discovered." The youth has been missing since Thursday night when he went boating on the Conasauga River.

Being the cynical bastard I am, I'm starting to wonder about the "Missingness" of this boater. As difficult as finding a missing person in wilderness type areas is, it is even more difficult to find a missing person who wishes to remain missing. I hope this story has a happy ending and appreciate the efforts of the professionals engaged in the search. If this is a hoax, as some are claiming, the costs need to be tallied and billed to the missing boater.

I had heard the angle that he was trying to get out of going to Iraq/Afghanistan...disappearing would be one way. Getting caught for faking a disappearance is another, less pleasant way.

I cannot for the life of me recall where this happened, other than it was a National Forest or Recreation Area out west, but everyone in my group actually had to pay a "Rescue Bond" and provide it to the ranger before being allowed to enter the area. We were whitewater kayaking, and I do remember the bond was based on the activity that you were there for. The bond, at that time, was about $28 a day for whitewater, and if memory serves, somewhere around $45 a day for mountain climbing. All the prerequisites about being prepared to self-rescue, having adequate supplies/shelter was very plainly stated in the bond form we paid for, signed and were given a copy of. The ranger also checked our safety gear and interviewed us all in regards to our whitewater experience, and knowledge of whitewater safety as well. In retrospect, it seems like a pretty good idea.

Ol' TCrash would have jumped my shit if I had posted anything like what has been posted by a couple of cops in this thread. I guess it's o.k as long as it's not a cop.

I bet that would cost a fortune. Maybe I could ask Jennie Snyder how much it cost. Oh, that's right, the taxpayers picked up the tab for that one.

Posting what one has heard about the situation is a bad thing? I think you are confusing information with propaganda.

I know this will come as a BIG shocker to you, but the overwhelming majority of those involved in your favorite cause on that occasion were volunteers.

Search Continues for Missing Teenage Boater
WHITFIELD COUNTY (WRCB) -- The official search for Brett Thomason has been suspended. The investigation has been turned over from Whitfield County Emergency Services to the Sheriff's Department. Volunteers are now taking to the Conasauga River in their own boats to look for Brett. "We are putting out boats in the river and try to go down and check the river personally," said Floyd Shipman. She (Mother of missing person) continues to say she understands why the search had to be suspended. "Jeffrey Putnam told me resources were now limited, and that it had already cost one million dollars," she said.

While you post conjecture and opinion on all police matters, whether true or not.

I call BS. Taxes are paying for the "rescue" efforts, therefore all taxpayers are entitled to express their opinion of same as Blackfox cries as the basis for his criticisms of the police.
I further call Pot and Kettle on Blackfox.
Goose and gander is a bitch.

You guys should type less. You expose your ignorance, and that just undermines our opinion of the police.
For anyone reading this thread, I think it was pretty clear that I was criticizing LR and the Moderator for ACTUALLY doing what I was dragged across the coals for ALLEGEDLY doing last year by TCrashfx.
I was excoriated by TCrash because after that young cop got shot and killed after serving a warrant in the middle of the night, I asked, in a very respectful manner by the way, even offering my condolences, what the advantage was of serving warrants in the middle of the night, when many people might come to the door with a gun, and if they decide to run, they are more familiar with the terrain. I was just asking because I figured there was a good reason, but I wanted to know. TCrash jumped my shit and then deleted my post and no longer allowed comment in the Fallen Police thread.
I was basically playing devils advocate in this thread by saying that I had been chastised for doing a similar, but not as disrespectful thing. In my opinion, what you guys have stated here would be much more hurtful to the family, because he is missing and his family doesn't even know if he's alive. Plus he's a kid, at least to his family. And further, I questioned a tactic, you guys are questioning his manhood and his honor while his family is faced with nothing good coming of this.
I think guessing and second guessing others decisions is what we do on here. It would be boring otherwise, and yes, of course that's what I do, same as everyone.
What you two did was posit that this young man might be a dishonorable person, while his family is trying to find out if he's dead or alive. Yep, Apples and Oranges.

I won't endorse or criticize what some other Moderator has done on here. That's between you and him.
I speak only for myself when I state, the fact remains it is not "Apples and Oranges", "Hose and Hydrants" or "Bong and Paper" (So Blackfox can understand the concept).
A million dollar search, over 3 or 4 days, which should have turned up a body if indeed would have occurred if there was a body, where evidence that the guy escaped the water and left the area was present, a search with dogs, trained SAR personnel, air and ground searches, infrared technology, etc., in a limited area, revealing no evidence of need for a rescue (Which was officially called off) could lead one to believe there may be more to the story.
And since taxpayer money is being used, I get an opinion just like you get an opinion (As wrong headed, misguided, factless and uninformed as they usually are as evidenced by almost every post I personally have ever read by Blackfox) in similar situations.
Deal with it, maybe? Or do you need some level of altered consciousness to fully fathom the conundrum?
Like I originally said, I hope the guy turns up OK.
Don't like my opinions? I guess you could try to find out who I am and rat me to my employer if you disagree.
Good luck on that!

I never said you weren't entitled to your opinion. I just offered my opinion that yours was tasteless. You just seem to have a problem with people disagreeing with you.

As a somewhat interested bystander my opinion, FWIW, is that the kid did a runner. I hope I'm right and that he contacts his family soon, they must be so upset.

He gets them all the time, since you pay his salary and all.
The scary thing is he passes them along with his random piss tests (As do I).
And the last psych and piss test you took was when?
(You don't even have to study for them!)

(You don't even have to study for them!) At least once a year. That's why I don't can't smoke anymore. I would if I could though. Do you guys get any warning when your going to have these piss tests, or are they sprung on you?

"You need a mental evaluation."
Another one?!?!
"Do you guys get any warning when your going to have these piss tests, or are they sprung on you?"
When the department was doing these at a higher rate than they are now, I got "selected" for 3 of them. The selection was done by a "computer-generated random SSN pick" is what I was told. The process was the same each time: Walked into the Services Center where I was met by my supervisor. He/She said "Get back in your vehicle and go to this address (handed to me on a piece of paper). I will follow you to the destination." We went to the clinic/doctor's office and I donated without my supervisor ever losing sight of me (at least until I actually donated). The results were returned a few weeks later.

Missing Boater's Father Has Message For Son
February 27, 2009 - 9:48 PM By Will Carr It's been a week since 19 year old Brett Thomas was last seen on the Conasaga River in Whitfield County. And now his father pleads for his son to come home, if he is alive. Brett Thomason was last known to be with two friends when they got out of a boat and Thomason continued paddling up river. Since then, the Sheriff says the friends have contradicted each other with their stories about and authorities have called off their search. Thomason's father, Tim, continues to hold onto hope but says there are only three things that could have happened - Brett drowned in the river, someone took him, or he ran away. "The message that I have for my son as well as any other one that maybe away from there family is that there is nothing that can't be worked out the trouble is not a problem, just come back and all the rest of it can be worked out later," Tim Thomason, Brett's Father, says.
