what offenses warrant suspension without pay? i know i have seen a few here and there over the years, i just can not recall what the circumstances were. for all i know, the suspended without pay could have been punishment for an offense.
and the remark about the officer's personal car was way out of line in my book. i used to service cars and trust me, Mercedes Benz are shit. oil leaking garbage. i have seen better looking 1972 ford pickups come my way in the 15 years i serviced cars.
so what if he drove a benz? what if it was a BMW or audi or a lexus? im glad that the only thing that got damaged was a pole and his car and his pride. it could have been a city car he was driving. that would have made a lot more trouble for him, and the tax payers could have been replacing a city unit at a cost of around 20 grand.
we may all not agree on what the police do or not do, and that is a personal bias for each person. but to sit and openly bash the men in blue who would give their life to save someone is crossing the line.
just my 2 cents.

Some the officers I've seen ain't missed a meal in quite sometime. You could be right. . .but some may be eating much less than the skinny one standing next to the big one. At least being obese is not a crime. . .YET! The old TV show Canon shows that even a heavy weight can move fast when needed. They may not stop quick enough though.

Note to self......sitting and openly bashing people that would give their life to save someone is crossing the line. _________________________ What are the rules as they pertain to "standing" and openly bashing those same people? When can we question cops about their actions and or the lack there of? Is every single thing they(cops) do off limits? Do tell.

It was a joke man. I love the men in blue, I didn't know we couldn't add some humor to the thread. What's the worst that could happen you get pushed down and defecate on yourself. Now that's funny.

It's OK, few people give a shit that cops risk their lives. I've been shit on about 90% of my career, but the 10% that appreciate us make it worth while; I've never expected less from anyone, particularly the anonymous folks of 'The Internets'.
Critics feel 'theories' and 'watchfullness' is doing their part... and cops think putting their vital organs on the front line between the lawless and predators and the rest of us is doing their part. That in and of it self makes folks nervous about cops because it's inherantly foolish, so the nervousness gives way to fear as well, an eventually they lash out in anger. People live in 'pants shitting fear' of cops getting over on them somehow, and that wedge becomes deep. Sweet Jebus, this very thread suggested the TBI (I would assume) should open an investigation because the cop was driving a $16k car, besides oversee the Department for already doing the most it could -- arresting him on the original charge. Getting to tell cops how much they are allowed to spend on thei cars? Rediculous. No, seriously.
To answer the question above, you get leave WITHOUT pay for any number of offenses when you are actually found guilty of an offense... not when you are accused of one. It's the difference between Enforcement and the Judiciary; being punished, financially, when being found guilty, not accused of it. I can watch a man shoot and kill another man (and on occasion have actually done such)...but he still has to be found guilty in court, despite what I 'know' is true. Due Process.
People don't think it should apply to Police apparently...but it seems they are taxpayers, too. They just don't have an expectation of privacy or 5th Ammendment rights, despite careers ensuring those for all others. (Seriously, not arguing those points.)

I think you have your percentages reversed, 10% may be judgmental pricks but 90% of the populous appreciate the folks in uniform. Unfortunately, and naively we think they (folks in uniform) should be held to a higher standard because they represent and enforce the law.

That's understandable. If I get shit on at all it's way too much and I'm going to make a big deal of it. I'm sure if it was actually by 10% of the people it would feel like everyone was doing it.

that is what i figured. the without pay as part of the punishment. man that would suck to loose a month's pay with things are the way they are today. times are tough for everyone.
let me ask this out of curiousity.........say officer X does something and gets found guilty and is given a month off without pay. say this same officer, officer x has a night security job at walmart. when your suspended, do you loose the right to wear the uniform as well? i bet they confiscate the badge and gun. what about the credential? they take that as well?

When you are placed on suspension you are relieved of anything that connects you to being a police officer. You are stripped of everything. You cannot wear your uniform (and why would you if you have no gun, badge,or radio?) As far as working is concerned, well you cannot work any police extra jobs, which is not a big deal because there are always someone more than willing to work that job for you. During an unfortunate incident one of my friends in the department was suspended for 28 days and had to quickly find work. He went to work for $7.00 an hour for 28 days to make ends meet. Thats pretty tough considering what you are used to.
