Staff Report Chattanooga Times Free PressChattanooga police are investigating a McCallie Avenue vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident that left a 54-year-old man with life-threatening injuries. It happened just after 5 p.m. Wednesday when witnesses tell police Lowell Stevens ventured into traffic in the 800 block of McCallie, said Sgt. Jerri Weary, police spokesman. A passing Ford F-450 truck driven by Leonard Baly, 58, struck Mr. Stevens. The victim was taken to Erlanger hospital with injuries that were considered life-threatening, but police do not have current condition information, Sgt. Weary said. No charges have been filed against the driver, she said. LINK

I had to do a double-take at the heading for this thread ... Pedestrian critically injured IN car? If they were IN the car, they're no longer a pedestrian.
Sad story nonetheless.

I thought making McCallie a 2-way street would have eliminated accidents like this ....

There are no brakes made that will stop a 2000 lb. vehicle traveling 30 mph in a 15 foot span. If one steps in front of a moving vehicle, one has much more faith in man's technology than I have.

maybe since the indidvidual was allegedly walking in and out of traffic, he might have been intoxicated and or toungue thick pills. this is purely speculation.

Traffic investigators with the Chattanooga Police Department have confirmed the passing of Lowell Stevens, the pedestrian hit at 800 McCallie Avenue on Wednesday.
Police determined from the investigation of the accident that Stevens wandered in and out of traffic at the time that he was hit. There will be no charges filed against the driver of the Ford F-450 that hit him.
