April 11, 2009
This morning around 1018 am Chattanooga Police were called to the 500 block of Manufacturers Road on a body found in the river.
The call came in from 2 fishermen who saw the unidentified body in the water on the north side of the river. Volunteer State Rescue was called to retrieve the body from the water and Hamilton County EMS will transport the body to the medical examiners office.
The identity of the victim is unknown and the investigation will continue. I will update this release when I receive more information.

we do get "floaters"...
usually when I hear about them, they are actually looking for a missing body about the time a "floater" shows up

My hypothesis is that bodies in water sink until decomposition is sufficient to create enough internal gasses to make the body start to float. I assume that decomposition is slower in cold water than in warm water, so it takes longer for bodies to come to the surface this time of year.
Sound right?

The identity of the body found in the river on April 11th has been positively identified as Raymond Earwood. Back on March 7th of this year, witnesses saw Earwood standing along the outer railing on the Walnut Street walking bridge, removing some personal effects. After a brief comment to some teenagers passing by, he jumped into the water. Despite rescue and recovery efforts following the incident, his body was not found.
On April 11th, the body of a male was pulled from the Tennessee River near the 500 block of Manufacturers Road . Positive identification of the body could not be immediately made due to advanced decomposition. The medical examiner was able to identify Earwood through his medical records.
