Birmingham police beating video: FBI will investigate Posted by Carol Robinson Birmingham News May 20, 2009 7:48 PM The FBI has launched an investigation to determine whether there were any civil rights violations in the case of a unconscious suspect beaten by five Birmingham police officers after a pursuit, FBI spokesman Paul Daymond confirmed this evening. The five officers were fired Tuesday night on charges they used excessive force on 38-year-old Anthony Warren, who lead lawmen on a 22-minute chase in January 2008. The officers are appealing the decision to the Jefferson County Personnel Board. Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper and Mayor Larry Langford announced today the firing of the five officers based their roles in the videotaped beating of a man following a police chase on Jan. 23, 2008. Disciplinary action also will be taken against supervisors who failed for months to report the incident to higher-ups, officials said. The beating happened when a Birmingham police officer tried to question Warren about possible drug activity. Warren fled starting a chase, captured by a police video camera, which showed Warren struck a Hoover police officer and then was thrown from his own car after he crashed. Authorities said he was unconscious when officers began beating him with a billy club, fists and feet.

Not only should they be fired, they should be prosecuted as well. The supervisors who saw this tape and did not report it, should also be terminated.
I realize this asshole tried to run down one of the cops while he was trying to put a spike strip down but that is no excuse for beating a helpless man.

I'm sure they'll say the perp/victim had some pre-existing condition that forced them to beat the crap out of him while he was unconscious.

I can just hear the pro-cop crowd now............. "well he was gonna die one day anyway so why not give us a chance to practice beating him??"
Response from one of the "top" cops might read........" The officers in question were only following their training and or department policy and therefore should be allowed to continue beating helpless people whenever they choose." How dare you citizenscriminals question how we do our jobs, you people just don't have a clue to what we cops do everyday???

The cops were stupid for not turning off the camera. The guy deserved to have the crap beat out of him and I don't blame the cops one bit.

This is another in a series of examples of how NOT to end a high-speed chase. Not a lot of wiggle room in beating an unconscious person.

But he HAD to be faking unconsciousness because I saw him climb out the vehicle window!
No, I am not serious.

You must have awful good hearing as I am Pro-cop and I am hearing nothing of the sort.
If the FBI is involved, I am sure that charges will be filed and these LEOs will be sitting on the other side of the bar shortly.
What I saw, and in my opinion, was pure unprofessionalism and adrenalin run amok and I can see absolutely no justification for any of it.
I say let the system run it's course and prosecute the LEOs and the supervisors that failed to supervise. These soon-to-be former LEOs will get the same innocent until proven guilty benefit as the rest of the defendants in Alabama.
Sad and embarrassing for all of LE.

I would NEVER lay a beating on an unconscious recipient;
I want all my beatings to be MEMORABLE!

I know what you are saying, but the wording is a bit off.
adrenaline is a mutha about all I can say about this....
No really feeling any sympathy towards turd in the mini van (thinking about it??? yeah still nothing)
People would be singing a different tune if turd would have killed that officer or even killed and elderly couple, family, kid, etc.....A TOTALLY DIFFERENT TUNE.
Five scapegoats.....it seems

Looks like they did loose control. To the level that some here have not really. They deserve disciplinary action. I have no sympathy for the piece of crap that caused the whole problem.

I would be interested in knowing the propinquity in time between the near-miss with the stop-sticks officer nearly being killed, and whether the radio traffic reflected that such had occurred; that could have had a lot to do with it. But, these guys knew cameras were present, and you've got to govern the emotions at some point. We'll see whether the do-gooders want to revisit this guy's sentencing and give him some kind of goodboy award for taking a knocked-out asswhoopin'.
BTW, Birmingham's mayor is a sanctimonious son of a bitch.

Five scapegoats.....it seems OK, I'll bite on this one. Let us suppose he did kill the officer, how would that make the actions of the officers justified? He was still helpless when they beat his ass.

I am not trying to justify it, ya just can't....You can try, but you will sound rediculous in the process so I will not make an attempt to. There is a reason for that and that being "its wrong" plain and simple. There have been studies and assumptions on why these incidents occur, but needless to say there is no science behind it that anyone is going to buy
What I meant by the "different tune" is if this guy had killed a family traveling down the road and got the same ass whipping, I doubt many people would be stirring much of a fuss

damn near everytime there are cops in trouble for something you get the :
"well what if the guy [did something way worse than he actually did]" about the cilivian involved
not relavent,.... the cops used excessive force on a dude who was unconscious, on tape,.. doesn't make one single difference what the guy did or didn't do

BHMC, I know I would want to kick the shit outta him BUT I'm not a cop, I am not sworn to uphold the law, you are. Yeah Yeah, I know cops are human just like the rest of us. How come when cops fuck up they are only human but when I fuck up exactly the same way I'm a criminal?

You've got a JOB again--why don't you lobby for an all anti-cop show so you can demonstrate your acumen, prestigious knowledge of All-Things-LE, and your doubtless LEGION of listeners and followers to put us in our 'place'?
BTW, we'll let you know when you MAKE a valid comment here or anywhere else.

Well, that's a starting point. I'm sure you and duke can understand our skepticism when the preponderance of your police-oriented posting IS, but you claim not to be. I don't consider factual reporting of suspected police misconduct "anti-police" except when it's done with such editorial flair or unrelenting volume as to become inordinately clear the poster or writer has obvious anti-LE sentiment as has, IMO, duke. 'Shit happens' in LE or any other occupation, and in a Nation this large, it's GOING to happen here and elsewhere despite our best efforts that it doesn't.

Blah Blah Blah...lets talk about that Video. How freaking AWESOME was THAT!?! Did anyone watch that shit less that Twice? I'm on, like, 40 something repeats, and it STILL looks cool! Van goes off-road, flips THREE TIMES, 'Dude' rolls out on a downward loop and comes to a motionless stop, the van still rocking...then just when his day couldn't get worse, FIVE IKE TURNER'S fuck him up like they think he's full of CANDY inside or something!! I mean WOW!! HOW fucked up were THEY?!?
Like many aweful things I do not condone...that shit was AWEFUL, but I SURE am glad it was on tape for me to see! I mean WOW! Doesn't that make you want to fire up popcorn and watch on loop with a headful of peyote or something?!
HEY! "NOTTA BEAT-DOWN PARTY" at Bud's or something!!!!

It is painfully obvious that SOMEONE needs to make coherent points for you.
