TFP:City vs. LandlordTwo weeks after a Hamilton County judge condemned the property, the city demolished an Alton Park house this week.
But the owner of the Fagan Street house said Thursday he was preparing to appeal the court order and the city failed to give him enough time to challenge the decision. Khalid Hashmi, whose Light Investment partnership buys and sells distressed residences in Chattanooga, said he believes he was unfairly targeted by the city because of his Muslim faith.
Yada, yada, yada. Anybody needing some insight into this situation could take a drive down Fagan St. in Alton Park (or Dorris St.) and see enough to form an opinion. The city, HUD and CHA have poured millions into Alton Park to drag it up out of the swamp of decaying property and neglect. Mr. Hashimi, who bought the subject house two years ago for slightly less than $2,000.00, now cries 'discrimination' over the condemnation of his never-improved property. Interesting that he serves on the Human Rights and Human Relations Commission. This is all so familiar to me, I dealt with situations like this over and over from a different angle, trying to balance the rights of property owners and the standards of decent housing set forth in the City Code-which is anything but oppressive, unless you expect to maintain rental property for minimal investment.

"...said he believes he was unfairly targeted by the city because of his Muslim faith."
One can only hope that the City has raised its collective governmental consciousness to this level ….
